This actually happened to me and my daughter (age 14) a couple of days ago - I bought her a fab jacket for xmas on sale at £15 down from £60. SHe didn't like it (that's daughters for you!) so we went back for a refund. I'd lost the receipt so they weren't obliged to give me anything, but they would have given me the full price back ( in vouchers) if I hadn't told them how much I'd paid.

    Money isn't everything
    (it's only 99% of everything!!)

Earlier in the thread I posted how M&S diddled me out of £5 with the socks.

A few years ago my daughter got a (glam) pair of shoes from Next, a year later after 2 wears the strap broke. We took them back (no reciept) & they gave us vouchers. The shoes were last priced at something silly like £3, but they refunded the full £40 (or whatever) that I paid for them.

If it was a small company I would definetly hand it back as it's really important to support small businesses. However, if it was a big corporate then forget it. With all their over charging and undercharging the tills will probably ring up even anyway!

Unfortunately it wouldn't be the 'big corporate' that loses out. They would more than likely deduct the £70 from the staff member's wages. Something they could ill afford if they were on minimum wage.
  • I bought some goods in the M&S 20% Off sale then returned something and bought more goods. They refunded the full price on the sale items so when, several days later, I worked out what I should have received, I returned and pointed out the mistake. I was greeted with amazement and after some time the assistant returned having spoken to her manager who thanked me and said that they would leave things as they were. I was £11+ better off than I should have been and I had an easy conscience. This experience leads me to think that not many people are very honest!

I'd go back and point out the mistake. We (hubby, baby son and I) were shopping in town a few weeks ago and had walked out of the store and into another one before I realised he'd pinched a book from the kids' section (the baby, not the hubby!). I took it back to the original shop and explained what had happened. The girl looked pretty astonished, but she said thanks, and I did feel good for doing it. We all pay over the odds because stock is "lost" or stolen, but we can't whinge about it if we are - in effect - stealing ourselves, can we...?

PS delighted the baby is such a well-read thief, obviously!
  • Amazon bless there little cotton socks did a very simular thing to me. I bought a SatNav for a motorbike at £350 whilst on ops in Iraq. I then requested a VAT refund and they refunded my VAT twice. It was a couple of days after the news amazon was treating there staff rubbish so i took my extra cash and no more has been said since.

I would definately keep it. In response to one person saying "credit crunch/struggling times" etc, big companies wouldn't be in such a mess if they didn't charge extortionate prices for their goods in the first instances - goods you can always buy cheaper elsewhere - Woolworths and Marks & Spencers being the classic examples. You don't see chains like B & M and Poundstretcher going bust, do you? No, because they keep their prices low enough to keep their customers coming back for more.

Many small companies are going broke every day too, not just large ones. You just don't hear about them as 10 or 50 people losing their jobs is not interesting (national) news. And many small companies charge (or try to charge) extortionate prices for their goods. Just because they don't have the bulk buying power of a larger company does not mean their high prices are any more acceptable than a larger chain.

It does happen and I do tell them unless they are rude. Was given change for £10 when I had only given £5, tried to tell them, was shouted at that a mistake had not been made, when I got a word in, I told them, smiled and walked out, keeping the money.
Funniest and most profitable. Hired a car in America, got home, credit card bill arrived, had only been charged for 1 day instead of week, was hardly going back to tell them!!
    Happy new year:beer:

I doubt it. Most big corporate firms use barcodes to track stock. If the refund came up as £140 and the assistant gave you £140 then the tills would balance.
