MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you keep a mistaken 'double refund'?

  • Sorry my typing is as bad as my spelling
  • I had this problem many times. I think the same rules apply for till processing errors, giving change and any other money handling transaction.
I found that large retailers with sales people who don't care, do not want customers to highlight their mistakes. Additionally, the management on duty who have had to process the paperwork or operate the override weren't too interested either. For example, supermarkets and department stores. Now I do not waste my time going back to tell them. It is just too much hassle.
Small retailers and local shops were very pleased that I was honest and remember me as being so. Post offices and banks have been happy, although embarrassed when I highlighted their mistakes in over-paying out change or refunds. I do tell them, although I am always surprised that they rarely thank me for my trouble.
I have come to these conclusions through experience. It is generally so in other countires too.
Be warned, that that extra money is not yours and if the mistake is found and they have your details, the company can put through the full charge again and then an amended refund. I would never spend it for a few months just in case.

I would point out the overpayment. How can I expect people to be honest with me if I'm not honest with them? The shop made a mistake. By keeping the money you are stealing.
  • The basic value of the dress is £140.00. The Sale allowed you to buy it for £70.00. The Goods are faulty which affects your statutory rights. You are entitled to a replacement or refund of the dress; of which the basic value is still £140.00. You may have only paid £70 -but this is as a result of the Sale - not the devaluing of the dress. To buy it elsewhere you would likely have to pay full price – hence taking the FULL price is not a crime but a consumer right. The machine was programmed to charge £70.00 hence records the sale. It also records the value of the dress hence the refund is valid.

No bloody way, for a suit to cost £140 in the first place without a sale on they were probably making £139.97p profit out of some 9 year old indian child, that they are happy to illegagly "employ" and let sleep on tables next to a crappy sewing machine and still have to prostitute themselves to afford one meal a day.

The fact they can companies can happily afford to slash prices by 50% -85% in the sales and still make profits just goes to prove what type of scummy conditions the people are in that produce them.

I'd donate the extra funds to a charity in the country that the product came from. That £70 could help starting to save 1 child from a life of violence, abuse & poverty. Its not much but it would make amuch bigger difference to their life compared to mine.

I'd then email the stores head office and make them aware of where their money has gone... B*stards
    Had my amazing little girlie 08/12/2007 - 11 days late! 9lbs 3oz
My second little girl entered the world 20/03/2010 - 11 days late! 8lbs 4oz
    Sea
    led pot challenge 4 - 332
    Make £11k in 2011 £0/£11000 - 0%
    And lots of other challenges!
  • I'd most definately keep it, if they dont spot it there loss, very rarely do we get any decent treats for shopping!!!:money:

In fairness to any store in this situation:

    1) you lost the recipt so the prevailing price albeit higher doesn't seem unreasonable for them to adopt. ( see 3 also )

2)if the goods were fit for purpose and nothing wrong with them then just because you purchased the wrong size doesn't make the store legally responsible. Any exchange or refund in this situation is a bonus and done for good will, the shop could have quite lawfully refused to make any swop or refund.

3)In situations where you are legally entitled to refunds loss of the receipt is not fatal to your claim, anything that proves the purchase such as debit / credit cards or w.h.y. is acceptable evidence.
