  • I don't class myself as a novice, and wouldn't even dream of attempting something like this......

Not exactly..... you still have to have the aol software running - IE: open it up and have it load up. Then when you haven't been on a while, it pops up to tell you that you haven't been on for a while (idle message off, time idle 45 minutes) and keeps flicking back to itself just to wind you up.

My brother bought a new lappy, and the first thing he did (after turning it on) was to remove any trace of AOL from the machine.... i don't blame him (and I'm sure aol still ahve some stuff on there..... somewhere.....)

I access via a router and don't have to have the aol software running at all, the connection is always on therefore don't have the annoying pop ups happening. I access the internet with IE ONLY for web browsing. You DONT have to have the softwear running this is not correct.
  • I originally asked about a router and it escalated to this. I did post on the internet forum but obviously there isn't as many looking at that forum, regarding the isp. Is anyone on either plusnet, eclipse or virgin?

ADSLGuide is about the best site in the UK to compare broadband providers and packages.

Have a look HERE to see how the customers of each of the three ISPs rate against each other. Hover over the graph bars to see exact percentages and the amount of votes.

Then look in the message forums for each ISP to see what problems are being reported for each ISP.

    Eclipse Forum

    Plusnet Forum

    Virgin Forum

This other site is a far better place to look for opinions of different ISPs. It is only about broadband, and the amount of votes, and posts on the forums far outweighs anything you will see on this site (10,000s of different people use it only for opinions/views on broadband).

If you have to pay extra for it. Then I would say don't go for it (you won't generally need it).

An IP address is your computers address on the net. It can be static (always the same) or dynamic (changes each time you reboot your modem/router). For general surfing, it will make no difference to you whichever type you have.

Static addresses can be handy, but only if you need them for certain applications/services (these wont generally affect you for surfing the net).

    Hiya

Ok so i'm late to joining this thread, but i'm with blueyonder broadband.

Perhaps not the cheapest at £25 for a 4mb connection but at least if and when you phone the helpdesk you get to speak to someone who speaks your language which i find a huge bonus and you are not limited to the time on the phone. The couple of times ive been on for help i have not been hurried at all.

You can't say the same for BT as i have worked for them before and you have 575seconds to get the persons details taken and problem sorted out - after that you start getting pressure to get them off the phone and are encouraged to waffle to get them to call back by saying things like reboot the system or uninstall modem / router drivers where applicable.

If you know of someone on blueyonder you can get them to refer you and you both get somekind of bonus. Last i heard it was £50 for the person referring you but not sure how much for you and you don't need to take the phone, tv and broadband package. I have the phone and broadband and have as i said phoned about my broadband twice, first time it was running a wee bit slow after the upgrades went through - sorted in 20mins and second time was after installing my wireless connection. Not their router (a linksys, which was easy enough to set up) but they still helped to confirm my settingw which with BT we could only hand them out but not talk through how and where to put them - disciplinary if we did.

AOL is like a virus on your system and i certainly wouldn't recommend it, nortons either as too many conflicts and its power hungry. Oh and most of the new viruses that are written are done so to disable nortons anyway so whats the point of having on your system one of the first lines of attack ?

Hope this long winded reply helps.
