  • Virgin do seem to be a pretty good allrounder? Will they upgrade me to 1mb for free earlier on in the thread someone said they were getting rid of 512?

The 14.99 is still stuck at 512 (for the time being), I'm on the 17.99 tariff, so got a free upgrade. They are trialling 8Mb, so that will come.

I don't work for them, so don't know what their plans are, just know that up until now, they have always kept up with the market, either by reducing the price, or increasing speed, or both.

I reckon they will always better value than BT/AOL etc.. but you can always get cheaper/better somewhere.

On the crucial site, you can either select your model from dropdown menu's or download a tool to tell you the type of ram you need. 512 is ok, 756 will be better, but might be overkill.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Whats your opinion on the router i mentioned in my first post, are there any others for less ££ or will i sacrifice the quality?

Sorry, just read your £37 post, that seems a good price, if you have a spare slot, go for 512 extra ram, it will future proof your laptop for a few years.

As with ISP's, you are going to get a different answer from everyone based on each individuals experience. Read chuffy's "which router" post, and have a look around this site, as it is a common question.

ebuyer do routers for less than £20, but I would go for a well known make, netgear/linksys/dlink/belkin etc.

If you are going wireless, also look at the sticky threads about wireless/security, (i.e. use WPA encryption with a long random key, disable ssid broadcasting etc..), otherwise you'll be letting the neighbours into your network

  • Fair play to all for your help, really appreciated! I'm going to go on virgin broadband and get that router i mentioned in my first post. I will also get rid of all the aol and the other junk!

Aol seems to have loads of programs on the add remove i need to get rid of all these? I also read that someone had trouble getting rid of the mcafee on this particular laptop.

Do you know anyone with broadband ask them how they get on, its easy for everyone to slag everything of on here, but how do you no......... Dont take what people say as gospel or you asking for trouble, i have my views as do alot on here and i aint gonna tell you not to do this or that....

Take it from people you know and work with see what they have to say.. And make your own decision..
