    Hi,

To be honest this is not an easy task.
This is very good advice. Although I have done several Siemens unlocks I am never quite comfortable because of the cut required. There is always a great feeling of relief when you boot the phone back up after the cut. :D

Saw the R1 clip at the bottom of the page. Is this any good?

It says it does unlocking without opening the phone and remote unlocking!

Are these chaps on the level?

thats for old siemens phone i.e. x50,x55 series. the only way to unlock that phone without cutting the track is to find someone who has Martech, which uses testpoints but still entails stripping down the phone. the reason i mentioned SST is because there is a free (you can use without dongle (V5.31)) version which will unlock that phone.

Thanks for explaining all this. I got the free version but compared to the screenshots of the gold version the option for Testpoint boot was not shown on the right. I used the one bundled in the USR Toolkit. The pro version has an option box on the right where you can select testpoint boot.

Could you post a screenshot of the dialog box for the free version of SST you recommended?

Thanks for your tip the Martech stuff is expensive! There is a chappie at the market who has one, he usually unlocks stuff for me around £3 as I help out unlocking my phones. Not sure about opening up the phones at a car boot sale, all the torx screw would get lost.

I think your suggestion using the free stuff at home is looking better all the time! Thanks for your patience.

With the cut do you recommend cutting down into the board at 90 degrees with the tip of a fine point scalpel, or leaning the blade to 30 or 45 degrees so that sharp edge (cutting side) of the blade can be used to cut and lift the uppermost track slightly, to create a break.

I assume the won't read SIM is a break below layer one. But the won't boot is that a partial break on the layer one surface track?

Also from reading forums etc it seems a USB cable, torx screwdriver and scalpel and perhaps plastic tweezer to remove / replace the sheild are the only hardware required (+PC+SST+USB cable to phone)?

I know after all this it may be a silly thing to say.

But won't Orange port your number and match Virgin's price plan, therefore unless you have lots of friends on Virgin that would be easier.

If you have lots of friends on Virgin just get them to do the same, Orange have a lot better network coverage. Okay I know easier said than done, but it sounds easier than unlocking the phone!!!

Orange no longer offer an equivalent to the Virgin plan. They used to, and it was called OVP Virgin ( or EQ: Virgin, in Orange speak). An excellent plan with zero line rental and the same call charges as Virgin but with the advantages of the Orange network and 'normal' Orange account facilities.

A year or two ago Orange decided that it wasn't profitable enough for them and 'ring-fenced' the plan. Existing users were able to keep it but new users could not sign up for it.

Our family still has a couple and sometime you see owners selling the SIM and transferring the contract to someone else, which Orange allow you to do subject to a credit check.

These are all good points. I should have mentioned I'm interested in unlocking the phones to learn how it’s done, just curiosity. I've seen the people at the market doing this, and on holiday I took some old phones I had around the house and got them unlocked and sold then to a phone shop for the equivalent of £700!

I have some SIMs on the OVP, and use a contract SIM with Orange with cashback, so this is just for curiosity IYSWIM.

I've unlocked Nokia's via codes but I've never opened up a phone before ;)

Just installing some of the software and try to find a cheap CL55 serial cable seems to be stretching me at the moment. There was one on eBay for 99p + £1.99 P&P but that’s not available anymore.

I'd also contest the assumption I have friend, if I did I'd probably not find the prospect of opening up a phone a challenging.

I can understand the learning how it is done, it was just the money saving aspect of it that I was curious about. I was looking at unlocking a phone recently (before I got it) and discovering that it was going to be quite expensive - but when the phone arrived it was ready unlocked.

I don't think the A62 will go for that much unlocked.

I presume you were on holiday abroad, phones in the Uk are cheap because they are subsidised by the networks, abroad people are prepared to pay more.

The price of phones seems to be plummetting at the moment.
  • you got a brilliant price and thank your blessings , nokias are easy to unlock but for a £5phone be happy and use orange
