  • I have had RMA phoning me about my Abbeycredit card and I recently made £135.00 payment to them by debit card then I went onto abbey credit card site and made another payment of £100 and again this friday I`m making another payment of £100 and will be in the clear. Will the £135.00 I paid to RMA appear on my credit card statement ?

It should do. I am paying RMA for my amex debt and the payment shows on the amex statement each month.
  • Shortened story is that I had a Barclaycard and Visa debt passed to RMA a few years ago. Agreed to a payment plan of £15 and £12 respectively. RMA happy with this, but then about a year ago phoned offering a settlement plan - I pay £70 for 3 months - debt cleared. I agreed and struggled, but paid the amounts due as per the agreement.

Once all was paid, I kept getting demands for "outstanding payment of £80". I phoned them on their premium rate number, and obtained verbal confirmation that the account was settled. Then I got another demand - and another. I finally wrote to them requesting written confirmation that the account was closed, and advising that I would not be calling them on the premium rate number. Guess what - never heard from them again.

Problem is, they appear to have now passed the alleged "outstanding" amount back to Barclaycard, telling them I haven't paid it!

Barclaycard investigated my claim, but as I had no written confirmation from RMA that the account was closed, they didn't believe me.

I've now had a demand from an alternative debt collection agency - Moorcroft - for the "outstanding" amount. Well, at least they've given me 7 days to settle it. (Actually, letter dated 12th, recieived 15th, therefore have only 4 days to pay them!)

In fairness, Barclaycard have reopened my complaint, and Moorcroft have put the account on "hold" for 7 days pending further information from me.

The upshot is that I struggled to pay £70 per month for 3 months, when I should have just continued to pay the minimum, because as far as my credit history is concerned, I have been defaulting continually since May last year, when in reality, it should have shown as "debt settled" for over a year.

Moral of the story - don't pay a penny to RMA until they have confirmed any agreement in writing. Which they won't.

I am eagerly awaiting the forms from the Financial Ombudsman Service.....

I am extremely sorry to say it, Paull, but you have 'fallen for' one of the oldest 'dca' scams in the book. They 'agree' to a 'settlement' figure - the 'debtor' thinks it is a 'full and final' settlement figure and pays up. The dca/creditor waits a bit, then 'goes in for the kill' after the 'balance'.
It is a disgusting and underhand tactic, hence the consistent advice, from this site and the Debt Counselling Charities, to make sure that they agree in writing that any such payment is made in 'Full and Final Settlement':

I wish you luck with the Financial Ombudsman

    Very well put maz.
  • I am so glad I am not alone in having to deal with these 'so-called' people at RMA. I was made redundant some years ago but was not entitled to redundancy pay. I went 2-3 weeks without work. I sought work through an agency and had to take a lower paid job which was also part-time. In time I fell behind with my Barclays loan repayments. I felt ashamed about my mounting debts and didn't talk to anybody for advice, I just 'buried my head in the sand'. The wonderful people at Barclays passed it onto RMA. I received many phone calls where I would end up in tears after they were rude to me and said things like 'pigs will fly' if I ever managed to repay them!! Another thing that surprised me was the fact that they can use sudonyms. I once had an asian man call me telling me his name was Jack (not unknown I know) but that his surname was Jackson!! I somehow found it hard to believe, he was incredibly rude to me - I hung up. After I calmed down, I rang back and made a complaint, Im not sure if this went any further.

Anyway, now I am babbling. To cut a long story short(er) and after many, many, many calls from RMA later. I went to CAB, which was informative but just not enough. Someone then told me about the CCCS. They were marvellous. I had a telephone appointment with them and was advised to offer a token payment of £1 per month (as my partner was on long term sick leave and no longer receiving pay). These fantastic people advised me on how to deal with RMA and their phone calls and said I was well within my legal right to change my phone number and not let them know. After this the main problems I have had with RMA is that they refuse to send anything via the post, so I could not prove any arrangements I made with them.

My partner is now back at work and I have since had another telephone appointment with CCCS and for the past 3 months have been paying RMA£150 per month. The other week I received a call from RMA asking me could I settle the debt in full - I said No, she then said that I could pay £440 for 3 months and the debt would be settled, or £220 for 6 months. I told her to ring me the next day so I could discuss it with my partner. After talking with my partner we agreed I would pay it off over 6 months - low and behold she did not call (I did not call them as like many of you have said they have a premium rate number). Two weeks later they started ringing me again but I kept missing the call, this was not on purpose. We now cannot take the offer as my partner's own debts have become more important. They called me back yesterday and asked could I pay the debt in full - again I said No, and was told that I would have to start paying more than the £150 per month I had been advised to pay, with my new found confidence after speaking with CCCS I told them this was just not possible, this is the amount that we can comfortably afford to pay and the amount that I had been advised to pay. The guy accepted the offer but only on a month by month basis and they would be calling me again next month. I then (as a joke) offered him £151 pm and to my astonishment he accepted that on a 3 monthly basis!!!!!!!!!

After reading one the previous posts I was surprised to hear that this 'full and final' payment(s) may NOT get me away from these people, so in a way am glad she didn't call me back. They will continue to receive £150 (or should I say £151 per month) from me, as CCCS told me they will never send it back, even if it is only a £1.

I am much happier now after speaking to CCCS and we are now in a position where I can say by the end of the year I will be debt free - YIPPEE!!!

I have found that I if I am soft with these 'lovely' people they will trample all over me. So now when they ring me I am very polite - I go through their security checks but I am straight to the point and tell them in no uncertain terms that as soon as I have the funds to repay this debt in full then I will.

I just have to comment on someone who posted sometime last year who claims to work at RMA, not everybody who finds themselves in debt has done so through obtaining credit cards and irresponsible spending. I was quite easily paying off a Barclay loan for a car and also paying more so if anything bad did happen I was safe for a period of time until I could get back on my feet. When I was made redundant, I rang barclays and told them what had happened and said I wanted them to start the process of the payment protection plan. When I received the paperwork I was very shocked to find out that I would have to be out of work for a consecutive 30 days before I could claim - yes I should have read the small print when I took out the loan - but I was not in a position to stay out of work for that long. And so the long downward spiral into debt began. I am so glad that these people can sleep at night - good for them!

I am sorry this has been a life story but I just had to make my own thoughts, experiences and comments known. I am so glad I tripped onto this forum!!!

Good luck to all you debtors out there - it will get better - but DO NOT IGNORE your situation. Get in touch with CCCS, this is their website:

    Hi,

Sorry, this isn't about RMA as I'm not with them (thank goodness!), but I've seen quite a few posts about CCA's, and I'm hoping someone can give me some info...

Am I right in assuming that this is a Credit Card Agreement that you send off when applying for a card? If so, does anyone know how long they're likely to hold onto them for? I ask because I am on payment plans with all my credit cards, most of which are fine, but a couple are causing me some distress with trying to get more money than I'm capable of paying.

I've been on the plans for about a year now, so I guess they're just bored with my small payments, but it really is all I can afford. One has been passed to a DCA and one is with the original lender still. Is it worth me asking for the CCA from these two in the hopes they don't have them anymore (I've had these cards for about 8 years, paid perfectly for 7 then got into trouble March last year)? I don't want to back out of paying them what they're owed (I did take out the cards, I'm pretty sure I did sign the agreements, but unfortunately I couldn't forsee problems with my transplant and other half losing job to look after me), but if they really won't accept what I can pay I'm wondering if this is worth a try? If however they're just trying it on and may continue with the plan if I actually get it through to them that I can't make money appear from nowhere, could asking for this agreement make them turn nasty?

Any advice would be appreciated - and sorry for hijacking this thread, but I haven't seen CCA mentioned anywhere before, so I'm hoping you won't mind.

    Thanks for any help

    Hiya guys

just to let you know ive had a card from Rma for the dreaded visit today, oh shucks he didnt turn up blow, i stayed in all day should i now write a complaint for wasting my time today? anyway had a letter from mbna finally who want me to call them to discuss the points raised in my letter ie the offer of reduced payments and being offered as pro rata payments with a listing of all my creditors.

I am currently off ill due to depression and seen a private consultant who is now referring me for specialised therapy, so am now wondering if i could actually write to all my creditors who have not accepted the pro rata payments to tell them that due to my illness i find talking on the telephone difficult and that written correspondence is better as i can ask for help and be helped by my councellors at this most difficult time. Continuation of trying to contact me to speak with them on the telephone is not helping me and is causing me distress and confusion for me. Id rather be treated with a little understanding as ive been pro active in addressing my debt rather in hiding behind my mental state at this moment of time.

Any one has a letter or point me in the right direction, its been hard to write this today but i think i must address it in someway if it helps one more person feeling the same way it s been worth it. Also i guess its helping me to finally confront my own need to get better soon too.

Thanks for listening, ciao for now MAZ
