Valli - I like the wine theory!
OK, question for you knowledgable people. Would it be cheaper, energy cost wise, for me to throw away my 2000W electric kettle and get an old fashioned to put on the gas hob?
Probably. Gas is cheaper than electric. Also, you don't put it on and forget about it, as it whistles and you really can't forget about it LOL.
If you have a blackout, you can also still have a cup of tea
And, they last longer. Much longer.Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine.....and those who don't.
As Ben Franklin said: In wine there is wisdom,
in beer there is freedom,
in water there is bacteria.
In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated
that if we drink 1 litre of water each day, at the end of the year we would
have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria
found in faeces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila,
rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a
purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.
Remember:
Water = Poop,
Wine = Health.
Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid,
than to drink water and be full of !!!!.
There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as
a public service
Thanks Valli:rolleyes: - I'm trying to drink lots of water instead of drinking pop or squash, etc. - that's really helped!:pNST #10 Steps 7K 2/30 10K 2/12 5 a day 3/30 NSD 0/20

There have been huge debates about this on the gas & elec thread, and the consensus seems to be that the energy cost impact is negligible if you only boil what you need at the time, and put anything left over in a thermos to use later.
However, it is EXTREMELY un-green to throw out something that works and buy something new... the greenest option is generally the one you already have. You need to consider the embedded energy and raw materials involved in making both the old and new kettles...
... so unless you know someone who needs your electric kettle, and you really want to move to a stove-top one, stick with what you've got...
I've got a stove-top one, and my parents have my old electric one, which they use in the summer when their Aga is switched off.0 -

I haven't a clue....the only thing I've been doing is boiling the kettle full once in the morning, having a drink and then filling up a thermos flask with the rest of the water to be used for the rest of the day. It keeps it hot for about 8 hours and it means when I'm here on my own we only boil it once a day. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it means that I can have a hot drink whenever I want it (and I'm an impatient s0d so that's good for me!)Jonathan Douglas born 20th January 2009 - 9lb 4oz

I'm afraid I'm not thinking green here - I just object to the amount I'm paying for electricity. £79 per month is too much! So I'm looking at ways to cut down.
The thermos flask idea is brilliant but wouldn't work well for me. I drink lots of tea and very little coffee (think I last had a coffee on christmas day - a liquer one with brandy in it!). Tea just doesn't brew proper to my taste buds if the water's not boiling when you pour it on.
I actually, very sadly, googled this question and found this: seems gas works out at half the cost:

Hi looking at the energy question on here I though I would ask a energy question if that ok.
I have a fridge and a chest freezer, would it be better and cheaper to get a fridge freezer?. I can not afford to get a Fridge Freezer but I could look on free cycle. Or is there a way of making it more energy efficent. My token meter seems to run down quickly and I am looking at ways of saving on the cost.
Is there any other tips that you guys follow daily?:wave: Wins in 09 = A vodka cocktail kit thing lol, £150 Amazon voucher.0 -
