I'm afraid I'm not thinking green here - I just object to the amount I'm paying for electricity. £79 per month is too much! So I'm looking at ways to cut down.

The thermos flask idea is brilliant but wouldn't work well for me. I drink lots of tea and very little coffee (think I last had a coffee on christmas day - a liquer one with brandy in it!). Tea just doesn't brew proper to my taste buds if the water's not boiling when you pour it on.

I actually, very sadly, googled this question and found this: seems gas works out at half the cost:

    http://srimech.blogspot.com/2008/08/tea-making-with-gas-and-electricity.html

But the electric kettle has an automatic switch-off. The gas one keeps going until you get there!

It's swings and roundabouts really... but I'm sure I can help as I pay £19/month for both gas & electric :D . There are lots of things to look at before you get down to the kettle.

So do you all want an [STRIKE]idiots' guide [/STRIKE]masterclass on energy saving?

I have a fridge and a chest freezer, would it be better and cheaper to get a fridge freezer?. I can not afford to get a Fridge Freezer but I could look on free cycle. Or is there a way of making it more energy efficent. My token meter seems to run down quickly and I am looking at ways of saving on the cost.

Can't help with the energy efficiency bit but do have a FF sat in the garage doing nothing if you want it. We are just south of Sheffield.

Hi looking at the energy question on here I though I would ask a energy question if that ok.

When you say better, do you mean greener ZLS? It would depend on how old a fridge freezer that you got from freecycle was. The older, inefficient models have been phased out, so you can only buy A-C rated appliances. Having said that, I have no idea what rating my FF is.

I always get the !!!!!! mixed up. I think you should have the Freezer as full as possible and that way it will run more economically, so put bottles of water in. Can anyone confirm this for me please?

Thanks for the offer but I have no transport,

I think I will stick with the chest freezer for now and look into bulk cooking and other ways of filling it up.

Is there any tips on making a nearly empty fridge run efficently. Everything we have in the kitchen runs off electric.

Um - keep the coils at the back clean, make sure the seals are working properly, don't leave anything wet/damp uncovered as it causes condensation which makes it work harder, make sure all food is cooled properly before you put it in, don't keep the door open longer than necessary!

Ooops! Slightly late for my own HHC! Back later!!

I have no idea what my fridge or chest freezer are rated at but I think they are scary lol as they are old. I got them both off my gran as my old FF blew up.
