I'm afraid I'm not thinking green here - I just object to the amount I'm paying for electricity. £79 per month is too much! So I'm looking at ways to cut down.

The thermos flask idea is brilliant but wouldn't work well for me. I drink lots of tea and very little coffee (think I last had a coffee on christmas day - a liquer one with brandy in it!). Tea just doesn't brew proper to my taste buds if the water's not boiling when you pour it on.

I actually, very sadly, googled this question and found this: seems gas works out at half the cost:

Hmm...that's a difficult one...I'm either a coffee or hot chocolate person (and occasionally tea but not often) I know what you mean about tea tasting different though...you can't boil water in a saucepan to make tea as it taste's funny (the things you learn in a power cut!!) However, you might find the same with a kettle on a gas hob as they're made from different things than an electric kettle so might change the taste of tea. I don't know these things - I am merely theorising!! :)

ZLS - Again, I am not an expert but the only thing I know about chest freezers are that they are more efficient if full so if it's empty they recommend stuffing the bottom with newspaper

Hi looking at the energy question on here I though I would ask a energy question if that ok.

I have a fridge and a chest freezer, would it be better and cheaper to get a fridge freezer?. I can not afford to get a Fridge Freezer but I could look on free cycle. Or is there a way of making it more energy efficent. My token meter seems to run down quickly and I am looking at ways of saving on the cost.

Is there any other tips that you guys follow daily?

Oooh, there's a difficult question. The newer the appliance is, generally the more energy efficient it is. So, if your fridge and freezer are new, and you get an old fridge freezer, you may well end up paying more.
I'm sure someone will be along soon who can definatively answer this though.
As for tips - make sure your freezer is always full - it runs far better, than empty/half empty. I think, it's the opposite with fridges (though don't quote me) I think overfilling a fridge uses more electricity?

Can you not get the token meter taken out? Those things cost a fortune.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Well we like freecycle because we got a fridge freezer from there it works really well!
but we don't have a token meter so anything from freecycle we wouldn't know if it would be more or less energy efficient, sorry!

Thanks JennyBee will give that a try as most times my chest freezer is not that full. On my fridge it has a freezer part that we do not use so I might stuff that with newspaper as well.

Is there any tips on making a nearly empty fridge run efficently. Everything we have in the kitchen runs off electric.

I have been told to spin clothes in the washing machiene twice before putting them in the dryer? not sure if this helps or not but I do try to put them on the raidiators.

I kept getting tempted to do other things like theres a pile of clothes for ebay and i thought hmm where am i gonna put this lot? Then i thought no just do the rubbish today. It was so much better having a particular job in mind cos normally i just potter about and nothing looks any better!

    So YAY!!!

I've got the chicken in the oven and i might go clean the rabbits out in a bit!

  • ZLS - the other thing which might make a difference is the amount that you could fit into a fridge freezer? It might be worth working out how much you currently save by having the chest freezer (being able to batch cook more, having space for whoopsied goods, stocking up on 10p loaves of bread at closing time etc!). We started using one again a couple of months ago as I wanted to batch cook for when the baby arrives and it's given us a lot more freedom with being able to pick up bargains/special offers without having to worry about having space to fit them!
