Miss A is learning about boats and poems at school this term, do any of you wonderful people have any poems about boats/sea/sailing that Y3 children would enjoy?
I have done a bit of hunting round and searching through our books. The obvious one I got was Edward Lear and the Tale of the Jumbilies.
I need to go and get something to eat but will be back in a wee while.
Sea Fever by John Masefield. So evocative, very few words that a 7 or 8yo won't know, and lovely verse

I second what Soappie says toots.
Can I just share something with you all. I am so, so, so, so, so proud of my daughter. She's a bright little thing (not so little now she's 9) but has always been quite shy and quiet. For this reason she's gradually suffered at school because she doesn't mess around and has tended to be ignored. This year she has a new teacher who, at parent's evening, said to us that she's very worried our DD will slip through the net because she's so quiet. She said she was making it her mission to make sure that our DD was no longer just below average but with the brighter children where she should be. DD has just told us that she's been moved up a group in Maths and into all the top groups in every other subject. I am so, so, so proud of her for starting to open up in class and i'm so pleased she has an amazing teacher who's made it possible for her reach her full potential. Ok, i'll stop gushing now! xx0 -
Mudders - that's lovely! Well done to your DD and to her teacher!I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Penny, you just reminded me of the Spike Milligan version!
I must go down to the sea again,
The lonely sea and the sky.
I left my shirt and socks down there
I wonder if they're dry? :rotfl::rotfl:
And I must admit AnW'sMum, the first thing that came to my head was
The boy stood on the burning deck
His pants were all on fire.....
But I guess that's not suitable for Y3 children! :rotfl::rotfl:
There's another John Masefield 'Cargoes' which I remember from school but it's probably got too many long words in it for little ones but it's quite green in it's way...I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

Agreed, its a fabulous poem... one that comes to mind when you think about the sea, but also a poem that I always stop and read if I see it when flicking through a book...0 -

Hmmm just tried to light a fire but it hasn't taken *sigh*
Tomorrow list looks good. Filing I need to do, have a pile of stuff I keep meaning to put away. Filing cabinet is well organised though so shouldn't take longMay even sort out some of the old statements etc.
