Hi Rusty and congratulations on making the decision to stop smoking icon10.gif

Are you going cold turkey? The first day will feel like there's a huge void in your life and you'll think of smoking as/when you do anything you normally associate with it, in my case, this was just about everything  It's very weird but, take a deep breath when you get a craving, it will then pass and congratulate yourself for not giving in and not taking all that horrible smoke and gunge into your lungs, which are already starting to recover icon7.gif

Get through each day at a time ... after 48 hours you no longer have nicotine in your system or "need" it, it's just a habit which you now have to get over.

You'll no doubt find your cough gets worse, you get a sore throat and start sneezing (as most of us have found!) ... all a sign your body's starting to recover, so rejoice in this fact and use it to keep you focused.

Keep coming back here to let us know how you're getting on and compare notes and BEST OF LUCK, YOU CAN DO IT!

I was told it was more 4/5 days for nicotine to leave the system completely and that's actually what it has felt like for me, I'm on day 5.

Edit. Actually day 6 lol, which is a good sign.

    Found under WikiAnswers :-

"Nicotine is a short-acting drug that is eliminated from the body relatively quickly (i.e., within a day or so). However, the effects of nicotene withdrawals can last up to weeks after you stop smoking. Nicotene byproducts can stay in your system as long as a month after you stop smoking."

Though it probably depends on all sorts of variants icon7.gif

    DAY 10 COLD TURKEY

yep me too, If only we could turn the clock back. I have been smoking since I was 16, Im 48 now. When my mam caught me smoking all those years ago she just shook her head and said to me " Smoke if you want , I cant make you stop , but you will regret this day for the rest of your life " How true she was !
Anyway, no more. I am looking forward now, and am determined to make this my very last ever quit !

    *Update*
Have my first appointment at the smoking cessation clinic tonight, they have told me that I just need to attend to get a letter from them so I can get Champix from my GP, which she has agreed to prescribe. So I'm hoping in 7-10 days I will be joining u all in the good battle.

well got the letter from smoking clinic, will take it to GP in the morning after work, guess i will need to wait 48 hrs to get it from the doctor. That's normally how often it takes to get a prescription filled out at our surgery. So day 1 on Champix will be Monday or Tuesday i guess.

Thanks a lot Helen, seeing "Day 18...Patches" at the top of your post and on all the others who saw the notice has helped so much, I think it'll also help keep everyone motivated. Thanks to all, it's not just me who benefits!

Hi there AB!! Good to see you again! What a time you've quit for now, like me, it's obviously the best thing you ever did too! Did your wife succeed?

I'm glad you're feeling better Shelley and pleased you worked out the problem, an unusual one, but...! Don't ashtrays smell terrible when you're a non-smoker!!! _pale_

You're going well from the sounds of things SAS, 12 days!! :T

Well done Neenie - I think the following is a great idea <<<"Feeling very positive today, cravings not too bad last night (was painting my nails to keep my hands busy :D).">>> So there you go lads, something to pretty you up too!!! There you go then lads, varnish your nails, put your false eyelashes on, lippy too. The new way to beat the nicotine mind problems!! :rotfl:

Oh dear whathavewedone, poor little chap, I do so hope he's soon back to his chirpy self. They're so vulnerable and 'young' when they're so rough, but thankfully, they bounce back quick. Thinking of you all and so pleased you've kept your wits about you and not succumbed! Well done to your OH also!!!

Another good and positive day for you SandC,excellent! Those 'smoking' dreams are hell, but what a relief when you wake up!!

Hi Jon, up to day 11 is great, though even though the euphoria may have waned a little it can still be turned round. Be a little more positive in your thinking and praise yourself up when you hit a void. This is something huge and so wonderful - and you are well on your way to achieving great health once again! Try doing something active when the itchiness hits in Jon, it's possibly just stress.

Excellent news Mimi!!! I know Day 9 is wonderful for you, a great achievement and you've made it there all by yourself! :T You're bound to still get thoughts of smoking, after all the years we smoke for, how can we not! Try sucking a sweet or mint after your tea and see if that helps. I found this one a blighter at first, but a sweet filled the gap. Keep it up Mimi, your OH will be so proud of you, all of us here too!!

You'll be at day 10 by the time you read this Dreamingalound, you'll have done brilliantly too! Try hard to find something to fill the gap whilst relaxing after work. You're getting married soon so you should have plenty to do and chat about to keep your mind focused, if not then go back to a hobby, or find a new one that both you and your girlfriend enjoy. Now there's food for thought!!

Welcome to the thread and to MSE Rusty! It's always lovely to see new 'faces' joining the big quit! I've sent you a PM (private message) to help with your question, but all of us have been a bit fearful of the quitting - BUT - you can always turn it into excitement as you're starting out on a marvellous journey to a greatand healthy life, just like you used to have before that evil habit!!! Take the bull by the horns and enjoy the ride! Good luck and keepstrong and busy!

Good luck with the "Kalms" Chris, I'm sure you'll find you'll have a really good night's sleep very soon. BTW, I tried to send you a PM last night, but it says you don't wish to receive them. Is this an oversight on your part or would you rather not have them? If you would like one then go to your user control (top left of page, near "Start Here") and you'll find the way to allow PMs there.

Great news mazza!!! It didn't take too long then, I'm so pleased for you. All the very best, stick with us!

Another very successful day everyone, so much achieved. There's a great 'buzz' here and it's all from you all making the very best of quitting. Keep very strong everyone and keep your eye always on that goal!!!
