The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

Day 4 smoke free for me
Thanks for all the encouragement, it really does help.
Had a good tip yesterday from my friend. He said if you feel you desperately want a cigarette, tell yourself you can go and buy some if you still want one in two hours. This takes away the anxiety (you're not denying yourself anything - you can have one in 2 hours) which then takes away most of the craving. And after 2 hours...you've usually forgotten about it.
Well done copperjar!
Also, I found that it helped when I got a craving to 'smoke' (but obviously without the ciggie) ie take a drag. I realised that when I smoked was the only time I breathed deeply.

Hi DD.
I remember well your first post, what a difficult time you were going through and yet you had this determination to overcome your smoking habit.
It really is a testament to the will and courage we all have deep inside us, but to do it when things are at their toughest - well I think you are amazing and such an inspiration for everyone! Thank you.
Look at us, Friday nights (Saturday now) and not a secret fag in sight. We got there and didn't we do well.:T:j:):A
Have a great weekend everyone. Just keep going.
Thanks larmy.........your post means a lot to me.
Yes, I was very fragile back then...........still not 100% healthwise but getting there and certainly trying hard to be mentally strong.
Ps Silicone for the yorkiesLike Larmy, DD, I can also remember that first post of yours ...and look at how far you've come since then! :T That chap'll possibly never know it, but he did you a real favour - or you achieved it in spite of him!!! :rotfl:
It's so good to see so much success here, people, so much positive thinking too. That's the way to move right on ahead and each of you KNOW you can! Keep right on and stay strong as well as looking at all the good things quitting has already done for you! Breathe in that pure air and exhale any old particles from within...you're looking GOOD!!!

Thanks Sue, your support has been priceless - truly! I KNOW that it's that and this thread that has helped me achieve my nearly 14 weeks nicotine free. xNicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j

I am so pleased I have found this thread, I have absolutley no choice but to stop smoking otherwise in my consultant's own words "you won't be here in 10 years time"
I am 46 years old and have been diagnosed with severe emphysema with a lung capacity of 30% - this is mainly due to smoking but has been considerably exasberated by a genetic protein deficiency Alpha 1 Antitysprin. Last year having become short of breath at times I was diagnosed as asthmatic - however following recent chest x-rays, ct scans and the great consultant I have been refererred to with the latest diagnosis I have no choice but to quit. In view of the additional blood problem, for which there is no treatment, the prognosis is not good BUT I can improve my quality/quantity of life by lifestyle changes. Quitting smoking is going to be a huge lifestyle change and despite my diagnosis it is still not easy - I know some of you may be horrified to hear that but I'm being totally honest. Today is going to be my first smoke free day (last ciggie 8pm last night) and hope to keep reading all your inspirational posts to keep me going. I am on a 10 week patch programme with a nicorette inhaler.
Sorry if my post is a bit gloomy but that's the reality of my situation and the very reason I must protect my lungs from any further damage.
I know I can do thismustkeephoping wrote: »Me - 2 weeks, 5 days (NRT) - Hubby (CT) 1 week 6 days !!
Well here I am and thanks to this wonderful thread. So so pleased to be where I am and hubby is on week 2 also :j.
I did not ask Hubs to stop smoking, but he fully supported me by not leaving his cigarettes around and moving out of my sight while smoking (outside as we never smoked in the house). We both smell wonderful, and funnily enough neither of us are bad tempered !! but have realised that collectively we will save in excess of £350 per month  . I really don't "miss" smoking and feel that I've gained SOOOOOO much but lost NOTHING!!
Apologies if I seem so smug, but my goodness I am so so happy, and it really is getting easier. I've just got through a family wedding of weekend celebrations and can HONESTLY say that over 3 days there was only 1 x 1 second moment (and that was without patches as I had forgotten to take them with me). BTW I will continue with the NRT course just to give myself the best possible chance but I am feeling more confident as each day passes.
To all of you who are on the first steps of quitting - I sincerely hope you suceed, believe me - IF I CAN DO IT - ANYONE CAN !!
Thank you all soooo much for your support and as nemo says - "just keep swimming, just keep swimming"
XXXXXXX and good luck to all:TNicotine Free since 01.08.2010 :j:j:j

Especially Copperjar:D:D:D:D
You are in too deep now. Imagine the embarrassment if you had to come on here and tell us you had succumbed :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Keep it up, you can do it easily
We are still missing people though, please come back and tell us what is occuring. If you are back on the weed we can, and bloody will, help you get back off.
Duty free fags? I would have bought them and sold them in the UK.
I would feel no guilt, fags owe me many many thousands of pounds. I hate to think how many.S!!!!horpe0 -
Hi there elfen, it's so good to see you're still hell bent on trying to quit. You WILL so long as you do as you've done and keep on coming back. Keep that determination each time you start quitting and it WILL happen! You know you can do it or you wouldn't keep on, so how about altering things...anything that'll help you - try it and see how it goes. If coffee or tea is something that affects you, why not try something else, just for the time being until you can manage without them; alcohol too can be a trigger so be careful of that. It can also be the undoing of some folk who are quitting. Don't let anything stop you getting through this elfen, and keep coming on the board so we can help you - when you NEED it! There's an inner you that desires this soooo very much, give into it and don't let Nick win! :jDay 4 smoke free for me

Hi again copperjar and it's soooo good to know you're keeping strong and staying on the straight and narrow. :j That's a very good piece of advice that your friend's given you, keep on re-introducing it at any time it's necessary and keep that foal post in shot. Daz really was right in saying that after you get past the worst bit, you'll be feeling so very different and so pleased you stuck to it all.! Stay focused at all times copperjar and get yourself healthy once again!
DD, I just know I can speak for Larmy and say that so long as folk like you can quit and stay that way for LIFE, that any help we can give is more than worth it, in fact it's an absolute pleasure!
Ahhhh belss you Daz, as ever you're here with your angelic touch. :A You're darn well right though. I just hope those who are not chatting to us are quietly getting along with it themselves....or will have seen your message and get back on the wagon tout suite!
Keep at it folk....or you'll have Daz to deal with???!!! He's a p*s*y cat really, with such a lovely purr ..but look out for them there claws! Are we really not allowed to write p***y cat on here now!

Hello and a warm welcome Tulip. A very sad shame you relented after all that time, but that's water under the bridge now. From here on it's time to move on, look ahead and get you back to your healthy way of life. You have the PM which will help, other than that read through the posts on this thread; they'll motivate you no end, so too will all the help and advice you receive from fellow quitters and others who have already achieved their dreams, me included!
Whatever happens in the future, for your own health's sake please don't allow whatever put you back all that amount of time to do so again. Nothing and no one has the right to mess with your health. I quit through willpower alone, you can do so too, Tulip, but why bother with the 40 you have now...it only prolongs it all?? Why not be that amount of time it takes to smoke them back into the stopping world!! This time, Tulip whatever happens - quite for LIFE - YOURS!!!!
