The Giving Up Smoking Thread!! Part 2

  • I stopped smoking 12 years ago. I realised that it wasn't so much the niccotine addiction that was causing me problems as the sudden increase in oxygen in my bloodstream (about 23%!).

It was the increase in oxygen that was making me restless. I was actually dependent on the carbon monoxide to keep me calm!

Once I realised this, I was able to stay calmer by increasing my physical activities.

12 years on and I don't miss smoking at all. I do know though that one's psyche will try to trick one into restarting smoking. Generally, we'll subconsciously put ourselves in to a stressful situation so that we can justify lighting up. A sort of "I was so wound up I found myself smoking a cigarette" sort of thing.

    Hope everyone's doing well :T
Was on a course today - one only smoker in the group, and could see that coming up to break and lunch times she got more and more uncomfortable and was losing concentration. In the end, she asked the course leader if she could go out for a ciggie, and was obviously really uncomfortable about having had to ask. It brought back a lot of memories - all those times at work/home/socially where I missed out on chat and conversation because a) I couldn't concentrate and b) was desperate to find a quiet corner for my fix. So glad I'm free from all that :j

I will be at a course today and tomorrow, 1-5 today and 9-5 tomorrow. Previously, I would always leave the crowd at lunchtime to smoke 3 or 4 ciggies, and also smoked like a chimney while travelling to and from the course... it's so nice not to have to think about that now!

  • Hi

Just checking in to say I'm still going strong and glad to be free!

Don't miss smoking anymore - not sure what makes this attempt different to the others. Maybe it's because my 40th is looming. This really feels like the last chance saloon, time to put away childish things and err think I'm out of cliches now...

Don't worry Catherine, maybe it just wasn't the right time for you. Keep trying, you'll get there x

Catherine it may not feel like it to you but you are already succeeding!

These mini quits are just building you up to the ultimate. You said it tasted disgusting. Once you have done this a few times, your inner sane and wise person, will scream out "OK Catherine, you and I have had enough of this slavery and bondage. We are too good to be feeling like this, craving a poison, letting it take us over and then feeling like sh@t"!

Don't think it will be long now. Just don't stop posting and don't give up on yourself. You really are worth it you know. :);)

Ages ago I went to smoking cessation group and the advisors were giving out prescriptions for people to take to their doctors for (in those days)
    Zyban.

I would imagine you can get Champix now. I had Zyban from my doctor. She told me if that did not work, I could try the Champix which is more expensive.

Anyway the Zyban did work - dumbo here chose to start again, and I was too embarrassed to go back so quit cold turkey.

    Good luck.

Champix is only available on perscription - i think.

I used it for a few weeks until I had to stop it because of side effects but I'm still smoke free after nearly 7 months. If you really want to stop & are determined then Champix will get you there.

The smoking advisor will be able to evaluate what type of smoker you are & really set you a plan - that is what they are trained to do.

You are doing everything right & you will be able to stop. If I can after 32 years you will. I thought I never would but I did & it hasn't been that hard really. This forum is a God send & really helped me a massive amount when I first stopped & felt the wobbles it was here for me.

    All the best.
