    Thanks Sue. Yep, a whole 5 weeks and not 1 puff. I haven't even missed them for at least 2 weeks now. I really really haven't even wanted 1 at all - not even for a second :j

    As for the red bits above............I am 'off' men at the moment........but if it was just a distraction I might make an exception! :D

    :rotfl:You make me giggle at times DD. They can give more than a distraction at times so keep....the water handy and exercise afterwards; well after whatever!!! :D;)

    Great news about not even WANTING one DD, you're up and running for sure! It's always soooo good to read posts from someone like you, so very determined! :T

    Hi all

    Well, after 3 failed attempts its time to go cold turkey.

    After failing twice on the gum I decided to attend my local give up smoking session and came away with the inhalators.
    Started them yesturday afternoon, all fine then today at work, I felt light headed and really not with it, now whether I have overdosed or its the withdrawal symptoms I'm not sure so tomorrow I am going to go cold turkey and get all traces of nicotine out of my body.

    I tried Zyban a few years ago, after 3 days I felt faint and had to come off them but the effects of taking them made me give up for 18 mths until I had a relationship breakdown, then went back on the cigarettes although I only gave up because of pressure from my then partner to give up, this time, it's for me!

    Has anyone else given up without any help and successfully stayed smoke free?

    Hi missi1, are you sure you're not inhaling too deeply and making yourself dizzy that way? Think about it. If you've always been a smoker who 'filled her boots' drawing on a fag so deeply then you'll need to draw on the inhaler far more slowly, far less amounts too. As you've realised already though, it is certainly possible that you might have overdosed on it or could all be due to withdrawal symptoms.

    Well, as you see, my title bar shows just how long I've quit for and that was all down to sheer willpower. It wasn't easy to start with, but more than anything else I was so determined as in many ways fear alone had driven me to want to succeed! Fear of what would happen if I didn't had been taking over my life and was making me so thoroughly miserable. Don't allow yourself to get to that stage missi1, it's never, ever worth it.

    No matter what goes on in your life, be it fellar troubles or any other, turning to a fag will NEVER fix it, it'll stress you further and in turn it makes you smoke even more. A young Dr told me that in hospital and it really set me thinking, even with his young years he had smoking sussed out correctly and he helped me more than he'll ever know, though I'd love to be able to have done, but as all young Drs they move on, but no doubt he's still recruiting smokers! :) From then on I just knew I HAD to do it asap. So I cut down and got to 6 a day..never smoking each fag until it was time for it. I then cut down to having just 2 at late evening until Christmas Day 1998. I couldn't help thinking "what on earth am I bothering for?" So, that night I had none and have never had a single puff since! I couldn't be more delighted either. :D

    I did it that way, so too did jammy dodger, feedumall, Pam, Paul (Sar), Chrissie (3timesalady) and many, many others missi1...and IF you don't worry too much about the way you do it, you could add your name to the countless list of quitters in this thread and the previous one.

    If you're choosing to stop on willpower alone then many of us here know it really is possible to do it and succeed and fulfil your dreams, and lets face it you want to quit otherwise you wouldn't keep on trying other ways to do so. However, you need to keep at it with whichever means you select! It may be a struggle to begin with, but don't allow that part to cause you to stop quitting and light up then look for yet another way; struggle on and take it an hour, then two, then a morning, a whole day. Then move onto day 2 and praise yourself so much for every hour you stay free as it's such an accomplishment!! ;) You can beat it missi1 and the younger you are the better life you'll have due to the freedom that stopping brings.

    Stopping smoking is what you choose for YOU and the gift you get from having run the course until you quit for good is - LIFE and that's the greatest gift you'll ever give yourself.

    All the very, very best missi1...you can do it, I think you know it in your heart of hearts. ;)

    Hi Missi1 - welcome to the quitsmoking thread :beer:
    You're not alone - I'd think many of us in here had numerous practice quits! Don't feel too bad about it - I know each time I lost a quit, I at least learned something about myself eg my smoking triggers and how to handle them. I think you've got it right this time, in that you're quitting for yourself and not for someone else. If your heart's really in it, then you'll find a resolve and determination that maybe wasn't really there before ie when you were quitting to please someone else.
    Keep in touch here and let us know how it's going, and you'll get a lot of helpful advice. This is a really supportive thread and we'll be glad to help!

    The biggest help of all tho' is coming on this thread - it really really helps me no end.


    MISSI I have requoted what I wrote in answer to your post about Zyban etc a couple of weeks ago.

    Yes, it has ONLY been 5 weeks with willpower for me BUT I feel so very very determined this time.

    Oh, just to add, I split with long term partner (not my decision) just before - still can't believe I actually decided to stop then!

    Keep coming on here and reading all the posts, but especially Sue's.........a HUGE help!

    Hi DD so glad to hear you are doing well and have escaped the cage that is called smoking.

    I cannot get over how similar our stories are. I had stopped for three years when I went to a club and decided to have just one! *rolls eyes*

    Like you I did not want to smoke "normals" - in my twisted logic I somehow thought rollies were less pungent or harmful. Like you I got in a routine of allowing myself the treat of having some on a Friday evening.

    I can remember my mouth used to start watering around 4 pm as I would count down the hours and minutes until I could have my beloved smokes *rolls eyes again*!!

    I was a secret smoker for many years. Quitting time and time again. I found the whole thing utterly disgusting and it was becoming harder to find any valid reason to continue. I knew I was not meant to smoke or have this addiction. I did not start until I was 26! Doh!

    However you give up is great, but the beauty of will power or the no aids type quit is it is over sooner, a kind of amputation if you like.

    Keep going everyone, especially if you are in your early days - it really does get lots better. Best thing you can do for yourself.

  • Well, three weeks in and still going strong.
    I've been upping my exercise to combat any weight gain, and tbh, that's the thing I find most difficult.
    I'm doing workouts and over an hour's hard walk/climb five days each week.
    Yesterday, I got caught in a really heavy shower on my way home - I was like a wet t-shirt entrant wannabe with beetroot face and frizzy hair - really not a good look at 46 years of age...

    Good luck to all those who are quitting and for those who are contemplating quitting - go for it! It's worth it.
