Welcome to this thread, Loubob! And warm welcomes to everyone who's joined recently or maybe lurking :T
You'll find this one of the most positive and supportive threads on MSE, so do join in and let us know how things are going, and we'll help if we can.
There's no right or wrong or better or worse way to quit - if it works for you, then it's great :j

    I remember a mantra I used in the early days/weeks - pinched off a quitsmoking forum :-

'I'd rather be a quitter with occasional urges to smoke, than a smoker with a constant urge to quit' It worked for me!

Thank goodness I have found this thread, although I do need to now sit and read it! I am a long term smoker for 25 years now (yikes thats horrible writing it down) I have stopped on many occasions with Alan Carr etc, but after recommendation I began Champix today, and I am determined to stop this filthy habit, especially as a nurse its pretty hard nursing people who constantly tell me they wish they had never started smoking. Anyway, cup of tea in hand best start at the beginning of this thread, and start planning how much money I will save! Good luck and well done to all those on this thread!
  • I cant believe its been 8 months since i freed myself from the life absorbing weed .:D
i barely think about it anymore and thankfully still find the smell of smoking repulsive .
in the early days its all i thought about how many mins hrs days etc had passed since i had last had a fag
TRUST ME IT DOES GET EASIER

i had tried a few times to quit i was smoker who loved a smoke ,
but this time i can honestly say has been different in that i wanted to quit for me, i had fallen out of love with my fix
i believe you have to be in the right mind set to finally suceed and have that "click" moment i No longer wanted to quit but free myself ..

this thread has been and continues to be a wealth of support, to all those newly on the road to freedom you've found the right place to be

    stick with it

Hi Steph and I hope you'll have had had good advice from your Pharmacist which will help with what to do now and in the future. Talking of Drs, Steph, was it your Dr who prescribed you Champix? Also, be sure to check that you're able to take alcohol with the pills. I hate to see anyone without vices but I know that with drugs I have to take I can't drink at all...or I'd be flat out! Take care is alll I'm saying. :) I look forward to hearing how you got on. If you still have the PM I sent then please try to help yourself through quitting with tips there now you've stopped or are slowing down with ChampixStay safe and healthy Steph! ;) BTW, are you Steph (Stephanie) or Stephan with an extra bit added to your username?

Hiya Choille, lovely to see you back and find out that it's now 6 whole months you've been free! :j Many congratulations Choille, you've done brilliantly!!! :T:T Thanks a lot for you two penneth for Steph. :)

Oh larmy, I really can relate to all you've said about your friend and how you have to strip off all the smoke-laden clothes. Our lass won't let her young one back into the house without making her strip off on the (indoor) mat after coming back from a friend's house where both the kiddie's Mum & Dad smoke indoors!!! :(

Pam I just love that very sensible mantra, what a perfect way to help everyone view quitting, you too for sure.

jammy, it's so good to know just how very helpful this thread has been to you. Jo must be so very proud of what she first started back in 2008. If you're watching in Jo and I know you do, you've done so very many folk a power of good, more than you might ever know!!! :T:T

A very warm welcome to you LOUBOB, you've started on a wonderful journey and will be so darn chuffed when you come to it's end. All the very best with Champix, take plenty of water with it. Keep chatting to us as we'll love seeing how you're going. Unless anyone else has kept their Nursing profession under wraps before then you're our first one....or first one to admit it anyway!! ;) Keep strong and focused LouBob, we're ALL behind you. :D

Must push off now, take care everyone and have a great weekend.

    Sue x

Andrew, I also see you're with us now and again, is all ok?

I gave up 2 months, four days, nine hours and fifteen minutes ago.

    I have saved £770.64

I have not smoked 3279 cigarettes.

I had smoked for 31 years  and had reached the stage where I was on 50 a day.

I gave up using Champix http://www.champixinfo.co.uk/ and will power. I now totally rely on common sense.;)

I can now breath and taste my food and am no longer a drug addict.:D

    You are a true inspiration :T :T :T

As I always say, this thread has helped me enormously, but it's a bit quiet at times, so I sneak over to the 'alcohol' thread and that also helps. Different substance but still about beating an addiction. Although I very rarely drink, I can relate to it as I grew up with an alcoholic father and to this day it affects my life - he died years ago.

You must 'sneak' over there and post sometime, we'd love to chat with you :) xx

Sue (and other regulars), as always, thank you so much for keeping this thread alive, I do read when I can and am so pleased that there are still people stumbing across it and changing their lives forever due to the amazing support you all give each other.

I have had quite a few wobbles in the last 3 years, some very recently, but thankfully nothing has ever stuck. This being said, I rarely think about smoking these days, the smell isn't nice but no longer offensive to me like it was just after I quit and my taste and smell was improving.

I've spent most of my adult life trying to quit something and it really makes you realise how silly it all is that we can't be more strong. These companies that make these drugs really do disgust me, I wonder if the workers in a cigarette factory are actually proud to be working there or just pleased to be working at all, I wonder if when asked what they do they hide the fact that they make cigarettes?

My OH quit smoking last month, although he only smoked around 5 or 6 a day (a lot more when he goes out, prob more like 20 in one evening!), and he didn't even bat an eyelid over it, no mention of NRT, no mood swings.....I just don't get it??

I think I must be a hardcore addict to find quitting stuff so difficult :rotfl:

I will try and pop on more often now, I think I still need support from my wobbles!

Good luck to old and new, never give up giving up :D

Thank you. And I am going to agree with you, because I am. :D

If a man like me, whose life revolved completely around cigarettes, can quite so easily, anyone can.

I was a true slave/addict/prat, I would not apply for jobs if you could not smoke, not go on long haul holidays, not go to certain hotels etc etc. My whole life was planned so I could smoke.

All it takes to quit is the realisation and understanding of how bloody stupid it is. :T:T:T:T:T:T

Next, I am going to try and give up running my arm through a mangle and and sticking knitting needles in my ears. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Keep going newbies, see sense, and never quit quitting :j:j:j:j

jinky that is marvellous news!!!! :T It was obviously the right time to give it up, I think that happens for most of us. I really do hope you'll have the willpower to be able to see it through all the way til you just know you've quit and it's for good. One day at a time jinky, it's the only way to success. We're all here to chat to and we'll be ishing you well all the way through it. Stay focused and always keep beautiful things close by for any time you may have problems. Beautiful memories, pictures, films (your own or dvds) help whisk the mind right away from cravings that, the longer you're free from, are so much easier to be able to get rid of in seconds. Best wishes jinky. :)

Hiya Jo! It's been a while since you were last here, well worth waiting for you though. So, it's over 3 years since you quit!!! That is wonderful news Jo, really it is. :T:T:T Great news about your OH quitting too, all the best for him too. It's a pleasure for us all to keep this thread going....after all, why not. Look at all the good it's done - 'meant to be' is the way I view it.

I often wonder how the blazes folk work in fag factories, surely they must all be smokers to be able to do so. Damned if I could work in one as a non-smoker now any road, like making mini bombs whichever way you view it. However, as you rightly say, most probably need the work the bllomin things provide. :(

Thanks Jo, you've been a gem as well as an inspitation to so many, especially in the early days with all those here going through it all with you. You did GREAT :D

So DD, you've been free for a whole 5 weeks now, excellent news, very, very well done indeed!!! :T:T:T Keep hard at it, you've come a long way and....don't need those 'things' any more!!!

Great going Daz, you're doing amazingly well....an inspiration no less for sure!!! ;) You might have a problem though...they still have mangles these days   Keep going strong Daz. :)

Have a great week everyone. Don't forget, plenty of exercise, water, water and......beautiful distractions. Yeah, a man'll do!!! :D:D
