Yes, it has ONLY been 5 weeks with willpower for me BUT I feel so very very determined this time.

DD, there is absolutely no such thing in anyone having given up for ONLY 5 weeks!!!!!

5 minutes...is only 5 minutes BUT to anyone fresh on stopping it can seem like a lifetime, so too is 5 days. Even for someone having been an ex-smoker (don't you love that word) for 5 months it's still a HUGE accomplishment!!! :j So, the word ONLY just isn't used here...got it DD!!!:jGreat advice though, and it's so good to see you helping others, by doing so you're also helping yourself soo very much, well done!

Great work splishsplash, you're doing so very well.!!!:T I loved your description of yourself after the storm! :rotfl:Tell you what though, all that exercise is really doing you so much good, you'll soon be finding real benefit from it so do please keep it up. How about a pedometer?

    Many congratulations
emily!!! :T:T:T What a time and what a saving in money, not to mention your health. You're doing yourself so very proud. Stay on course and just think how quickly you could notch up a £1000!!!!! ;)

Well done everyone, must cut a dash as it's time for tea. Thanks a lot larmy and Pam, great work both of you!!!

    Hi all

Well, after 3 failed attempts its time to go cold turkey.

After failing twice on the gum I decided to attend my local give up smoking session and came away with the inhalators.
Started them yesturday afternoon, all fine then today at work, I felt light headed and really not with it, now whether I have overdosed or its the withdrawal symptoms I'm not sure so tomorrow I am going to go cold turkey and get all traces of nicotine out of my body.

I tried Zyban a few years ago, after 3 days I felt faint and had to come off them but the effects of taking them made me give up for 18 mths until I had a relationship breakdown, then went back on the cigarettes although I only gave up because of pressure from my then partner to give up, this time, it's for me!

Has anyone else given up without any helpand successfully stayed smoke free?

I am in such a rush as supposed to be at a friends in 1/2 hour and not washed/changed yet BUT just wanted to answer you quickly. Thanks - as always - for your fabulous encouragement. I know what you're saying - and believe it - but was answering Missi's question above and in that instance I didn't think 'only' 5 weeks was quite the answer she was after IYSWIM

    Larmy thanks for your message.

Will be back on later...........out with 4 smokers tonight. Oh well, at least I won't be freezing cold and wet whilst breathing in all those chemicals :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Stopping smoking is what you choose for YOU and the gift you get from having run the course until you quit for good is - LIFE and that's the greatest gift you'll ever give yourself.

All the very, very best missi1...you can do it, I think you know it in your heart of hearts. ;)

Love with strength in abundance, Sue xx

Sue, thanks for your encouraging words, they truly are a great help and the words that you said (above) are going to stick with me until I am free.
I am so determined now to give up, more than I have been and have'nt stopped trying to give up over the last 2 weeks or so and I really hope that when I go to the 2nd quit smoking session the weekend, my carbon monoxide reading will be a lot lower than it was 1st time round.
I also started a cash, no ash savings pot and it lasted 2 days, but I really miss not seeing the cash build up and miss dreaming of the day that my cough will have gone and my breathing improves so I think it's time to quit!!:rotfl:

Hi Missi1 - welcome to the quitsmoking thread
. I think you've got it right this time, in that you're quitting for yourself and not for someone else. If your heart's really in it, then you'll find a resolve and determination that maybe wasn't really there before ie when you were quitting to please someone else.

    Pam x

Thanks Pam, you are so right there and there is nothing worse than someone pressurising all the time to give up as thats when it fails and even after I gave up, the person pressurising me always used to smell me to make sure I had'nt had a crafty one etc and then of course it makes you worse as your constantly reminded of it. This time it is for me and I will be stronger for wanting to give up of my own accord :j
  • Hi all

Iv decided to try to quit smoking again, this is about my 10th attempt over the past 12 years!
Had my last cig last night and have found today very hard. Especially after dinner tonight, if i had money I think i would have gone to the shop and bought some cigs. I just thought to myself, "i dont know why i even quit, i like smoking!" although i know that is not true, i hate myself for smoking!

I have quit before for over a year in 2005 and again in 2007, both times i was pregnant so think that made it easier to quit. im so annoyed with myself for starting again!

I have read the allen carr book a few times before. This time I got the DVD which was good.

Im glad iv found this thread hopefully it will keep me motivated, i wil check in again tomorrow :)

Hi Catherine and a warm welcome to MSE and to the thread. We're honoured in you making your first post on this thread, good for you!

Keep on listening to/watching the DVD and whatever else you feel is possible to help you. I do hope this time will be the one when you succeed for good. Most of us have quit more than once before we do it finally so 10 times is not really a surprise, and it doesn't mean that you won't be able to manage it this time around! :)

At the times you're finding hard ie. after dinner, get straight up and wash up or, if someone's looking after the kiddies, pop out for a brisk walk. Cleaning your teeth is another way to help especially after we've eaten. Plenty of water, fresh fruit and ....ice poles?? They work for so many! Get as much exercise as you can...and keep reading the posts on the thread as well as chatting to us all either daily or what suits you best. We're here to help you and as you progress you can help others too! :D If you really want soething to take away a rotten craving...look into the beautiful eyes of you little ones, they're depending on you. :) All best wishes Catherine - you CAN do it again!

DD, I see what you mean, sorry for jumping the gun - it pays to read properly first I guess! :o

Well done for that sheer determination missi1. :) With regards to the money, why not put it in a jar and then you can physically watch it grow day by day. It really does help to have or find any incentives possible, and if you're not sure whether they'll work or not - give it a try and find out; you may just find the number to the safe 'so to speak. Go to it missi1, crack each!!! :j ;)

    Well done everyone
, there are so many great vibes on the thread right now, a great smell of success in the air...can you smell it too? Course you can, keep at it...an focus on that goal post!!!! :D

Well done for trying to quit again and for coming on this thread - it's helped me no end!

I have quoted a post below which gave me tremendous motivation.
Hope it helps you too...........that journey to freedom from nicotine may be very hard at times - even seem impossible - but soooo worth it.

Was just reading my posts from June and saw this one from Larmy. Shame, shame, shame. :o:o:o I gave up for 12 days then me and my husband broke the pact. He said "I really fancy a fag tonight", I said "I do too", he said "shall we just get 10?", I said "g'wan then". :D The rest, as they say is history.

I felt sooooo much better after about 4 days of not smoking - I could take a really deep breath, I could walk into my bosses office not stinking, I didnt rush out into the back garden just before taking my children to bed...

So today is day one once again. I am so fed up of stopping smoking. I just want to stop and stay stopped. Cravings are killing me at the moment and I am so near to tears at my desk at work. Grrrrrrrr to the fags. I hate them.

I hate having to make sure I've got enough fags for the day.

I hate having to shove a packet in my (already) overstuffed bag.

I hate going into the shops with two toddlers asking for 20 cigs.

I hate not wanting to talk to people because my breath stinks of smoke.

I hate that I spend £25 a week on something I set fire to.

I hate getting up 10 minutes earlier so that I can have a cigarette before the kids wake up.

I hate that I have to sit in the garden in the snow and rain.

I hate that I cant sit still after eating a meal.

I hate getting stressed in the morning just because I havent had my tea and fag yet.

There are loads more but thats just to start.

Hi DD so glad to hear you are doing well and have escaped the cage that is called smoking.

I cannot get over how similar our stories are. I had stopped for three years when I went to a club and decided to have just one! *rolls eyes*

Like you I did not want to smoke "normals" - in my twisted logic I somehow thought rollies were less pungent or harmful. Like you I got in a routine of allowing myself the treat of having some on a Friday evening.

I can remember my mouth used to start watering around 4 pm as I would count down the hours and minutes until I could have my beloved smokes *rolls eyes again*!!

I was a secret smoker for many years. Quitting time and time again. I found the whole thing utterly disgusting and it was becoming harder to find any valid reason to continue. I knew I was not meant to smoke or have this addiction. I did not start until I was 26! Doh!

However you give up is great, but the beauty of will power or the no aids type quit is it is over sooner, a kind of amputation if you like.

Keep going everyone, especially if you are in your early days - it really does get lots better. Best thing you can do for yourself.

Yes, we have a lot in common!

You saying about your mouth watering struck a chord with me.......used to meet ex 1/2 way at a Little Chef/Petrol Station to hand over boys for the weekend and can remember that adrenaline high I had driving there because I knew I could then go in PS and buy my 20 menthols and drive home at the speed of light and I could then have the first of my once a fortnight all weekend fags.

I went in to our local shop today and when I was finished paying for my bits the girl asked me if I wanted 20 cigs for my lady
'Eeerrr, no I don't need them..........she's given up' I replied.

Yes, I used to go in there and pay with money out of a seperate purse and ask for the receipt and pretend they were for 1 of my clients. Secret Smoker! How ridiculous was that?

I have noticed that I am so much calmer (I also cut out tea & coffee as weel as nicotine tho') and my teeth look better as well as my skin looking nicer. All good stuff!
