Great link Jo, thanks. And good luck with the teetotalness :-) I love my wine, but am not drinking at the moment cos of all the associations. I'm curious - is it similar to giving up the fags?
Choille, with you all the way. I think our remoteness is an issue too in motivation and ability to stop. But the support on here is great - quitters at all different stages too?

Morning hellnearth, good for you for cutting down drinking whilst quitting fags. I found that after I quit smoking my drinking increased rapidly.
Although I found quitting smoking very difficult at times, it was a walk in the park compared to quitting drinking!! I have no idea why either? Maybe because there is lots of help out there for quitting smoking, what with the advisors, clinics, patches, gum, champix etc etc...plus it's easier to be open to everyone that you are quitting smoking, you can tell all your family and colleagues. Quitting drinking is a little more difficult, there is help out there but its harder to get, plus to get help that means you have a 'problem' which then in turn makes it more difficult to tell your family and particularly colleaques because of the association of being an alcoholic. The majority of people will think of an alcoholic as being a homeless drunk, or someone who props up the bar in the pub till closing, not a 30 something mother of 3 with a fulltime jobDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
jo1972 - That's what I googled & will phone them tomorrow - many thanks.:A
hellnearth - Yes, I do think that the remoreness is an issue. I would be really pleased if you could be my buddy & inspiration as you are actually doing it.:T0 -

Choille I noticed in your post that you were having dental problems. I was never a heavy smoker and had long long periods of stopping but I was shocked to be told I had gum disease and the dentist said it can be caused by smoking.
Smoking stops the blood flow to your gums and then causes them to recede. It also causes the disease to eat away at your bones in your gums!!
What followed was some very uncomfortable treatment with a periodontist at the princely sum of £140 or so for 40 minutes work!
There is an awful lot of publicity about what smoking does to your heart and lungs but apart from one advert I have never seen them push just how bad it is for your teeth, not to mention mouth cancer.
I still have to see the periodontist every six months to see how my gums are and they receeded so much. It was so gradual it was hard to see it happening but I knew by the way they felt there was something very wrong.
All of you quitters out there, please be reminded of this horrible disease which just gets worse and worse. I am lucky I did not lose my teeth!!! It has cost me a lot of money though.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Hi larmy16 - Yes the dental thing has stopped me in my tracks. But it's all a bit closing the gate after the horse has bolted - *sigh* I actually didn't know about the teeth thing & gums until recently, but would it have made any difference to me? I don't know.
I will try & get the book & yes the money saving will be a big incentive.
Just this past couple of days I've smoked less than half what I would of normally, but aim to stop totally once I have a plan. And with all your help on here too as I'm feeling a bit scared even before I start.
Thanks all you great quitters.0 -

I'm just not getting anywhere here, I'm back on this thread again needing help.
I've tried various forms of NRT over the years, I've tried hypnosis, and just this week tried NLP, where I linked massive pain to smoking and the pain was? Well I smoked 6 fags in a row until I made myself sick, it was a horrible experience and sure enough I never smoked the rest of the evening, But the following morning was torture and started again, All I could think about was smoking and I tried the Allen Carr rejoicing method when you want a cig, but that's like rejoicing when you stub your toe on the corner of the door in the dark, its just not happening I'm sure all these methods do work, and I admit its probably me that's the problem but what do I do? I too tried everything including hyonosis and nothing helped until i used Champix. Have you thought about asking your Dr to give them too you. I was silly enough to start again after a nicotine free year but i have started the champix again and im now 6 days into my quit.Nov 2010 :1st win beauty box set of 3 worth £40 and a cushelle koala

Hi Everyone.
Welcome to the newbie's your definitely in the right place for help and support in your quest to give up smoking and becoming smoke free.
I'm still smoke free and its not bothered me at all yet. However it does seem strange going into my local shop and not buying any fags.
I'm a bit worried though this evening as i'm going out socially tonight with a bunch of smokers. I need to stay strong and not buckle once i've had a few drinks.
I've been around smokers at work on breaks and lunches etc and it has not bothered me at all so far, hopefully fingers and toes crossed tonight will be the same
My appetite has increased i'm eating like its going out of fashion, however i'm not too worried about that as i'm only slim and can afford to put on some weight. :cool:Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
