Hi all- graham c had to respond to your post, although I've been thinking about this for a while. I know you have successfully beaten this horrendous addiction, yep I know AA might have helped, you sound quite succesful- I'm so pleased you have found something that helps you overcome your alcoholism. BUT, sometimes I find your thoughts a bit pious, and a bit black and white...and well, reactionary when we are all trying to be supportive. I know what you are saying is essentially right, but you are way down the road o f recovery , and many people on here are just starting out - GC I like your advice, I know its right (mostly), but being very black/white and pious doesn't help. Not a critisism just an observation.
Good luck to everyone tonight- come on guys.
Just trying to help. :T
Also, I don't think that we will ever beat the addiction. The alcoholic is inside me, and always will be, I just don't feed it alcohol.
I don't consider alcoholic a dirty word. There is nothing to be ashamed of, it is an illness.
Acceptance is key to recovery, and many people don't want to accept that their drinking is alcoholic. Look how many people did not make their targets for AFJ. There were plenty. They only had to go a month (or the number of their chosen days) without booze, but most people could not do it.
Not everyone on here is alcoholic, there are some hard drinkers I now that are not alcoholic. It is about more than just units drunk.
But I feel there is a lot of alcoholic behaviour that is not being addressed, and people are embarrassed or too sensitive to bring it up. And that don't help no-one.0 -
4AF for me please, winebox. I found it a little bit easier tonight once I'd given myself a good talking to at 6pm.
I have a theory that maybe on top of missing the wine I might also be suffering from a bit of SAD. Alongside AF challenge I also have another one running or rather walking. I have been trying to get out for a walk every day for at least half an hour. I was doing fine until I had a bit of a bad back last week and then came the snow. By yesterday I think I had cabin fever! I was very down and then craving for wine was worse than ever. Today I had a good walk and some fresh air and feel much better for it.
Very quiet on here tonight but some good posts. Thanks eselt, for yours. GC, I'm sure you mean to be helpful but when I read your posts it comes across as:- if you're on this thread you must have a problem with drink
- if you have a problem with drink then you must be an alcoholic
- if you don't admit to being an alcoholic then stop posting on this thread
I apologise to one and all as I didn't mean my posts to come across like that.
If you are on this thread I do think you have issues with drink. Why post on it otherwise? If you are drinking too much, you cut down. If you find it difficult/cannot cut down, then you have issues with drink.
Not everyone with drink issues is alcoholic, though most are. Otherwise, they would cut down/stop drinking, and it would stay that way.
I don't have an issue with being alcoholic, and I know the denial is very strong in people. Some told me in 1997 that I had real issues with drink, and people kept on telling me for the next 10 years until I got cleaned up. I simply did not want to believe them until things got too tough. Then I realised there were loads of people like me, and that was a great comfort.
It's a diifficult thing to define, so I wouldn't take any offence to anything I say.
I understand - I used to be very sensitive to any criticism of my drinking and would vehemently deny I was alcoholic. So I know the score.0 -

I dunno if (for me) its being tired, after work, or being stressed cos of kids/work etc life combo, or being lonely, or whatever, but I do know what you mean.:rolleyes:Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:

Common triggers are
Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired
so, if you are thinking of picking up, just think HALT, and examine your motives0 -
