All of this talk about IS hats has reminded me that I still need to make about another 100 pom poms
Haven't done much at all today. My brother Alan had a heart attack yesterday, so family have been popping in or phoning all day. Poor thing waited for years for his back operation and had just started to get back on his feet, and now he's stuck back in hospital for at least 5 days. SIL (Lestrene) doesn't know whether she is coming or going - her sister is still in the same hospital as Alan. I think I mentioned a few weeks ago that she had been screaming in pain when she tried to move. She has MS and we didn't know if it was something to do with that. Anyway, after a week or so in hospital they told her she had a fractured hip. The pain has hardly lessened despite them drugging her up to the eyeballs They eventually started her on physio even though she was still yelling in pain. Yesterday they did more x-rays and discovered that she had actually 'broken' her hip... and they had been forcing her to walk on it and exercise it :eek::eek:.
On top of this, mam has been poorly again. Blood tests show her liver function in compromised. Doc rang up today and suggested seeing the consultant. Seems there may be a chance of putting a camera down and trying to dislodge any blocked stones with it - this would be far less dangerous for her than surgery and doc thinks she will be strong enough for the procedure... so fingers crossed.
Feeling a little guilty as I haven't done much knitting at all. Got a few things to add to my totals but I'll leave them until next time. My shoulder is a lot better so hopefully I'll gather my wits about me and get some more done over the next few days. Mind you, the miserable weather doesn't help.
Had 2 honorary great-nieces for a few hours last night. They had been staying at brother's house, so I had to bring them to mine away from the ambulance and paramedics. Kept them whilst Lestrene was at the hospital and we spent the whole night watching the Disney Channel... good job I love Winnie The Pooh. Expecting another 2 terrors here tomorrow as niece (Sarah) and her boys are coming up from London for a few days - that means a chicken dinner to make for dinner tomorrow night. And talking of dinners... one good thing came from Alan's attack - his son (Keith) just arrived from Doncaster to visit him and brought me 2 rabbits and some pigeon breasts. Never had pigeon before so that will be a challenge... not sure I can bring myself to eat it
Hope everyone is keeping warm and dry.

This is from the Innocent website
"Our friends at Age Concern and Help the Aged are also knitting winter woollies for our squeezies and veg pots to help raise even more money for this year’s Big Knit. Keep your eyes peeled for them in store in November."
I also notice that Sainsburys are giving 35p a hat this year, although it was always 50p in the past.
I've Googled to find the patterns for squeezies and veg pots, but haven't found anything to add to what has already been posted.
I just do the simplest one yarn bottle hats - I was making bobbles but am using some fluffy made ones (I got in Woolworths before they closed) as well. I like Kinsey's method - much easier than mine which looped wool around two fingers and then I struggled to get a cut piece tied around the loops tightly enough before snipping.0 -
So sorry that you have been having such a stressful and distressing time, Lorna. I certainly don't think that you should feel guilty if you haven't been knitting - it sounds as though you have far too much to do as it is!
I do hope that your brother and mother start to make good recoveries soon.0 -
Oh Lorna, what a horrible time you are having. Knit if it helps to occupy your mind but don't feel guilty at all if you don't. You have so much on your plate. Hope the littlies keep you pleasantly occupied and huge (((((((hugs))))))) to you and your poorly ones. re your poor SIL being made to walk on a broken hip.0
-
Lorna - sending lots of (((hugs))) to you and your family. What a tough time you are all having. I hope everyone starts feeling better soon. Please don't feel guilty about not knitting - you have a lot to think about at the moment.
Seakay - yes, I was disappointed to see that the hats will now raise only 35p, but it's better than nothing, I suppose. Like you, I struggled with the two finger method of making bobbles - I much prefer Kinsey's way.
Jean - weather has been overcast here all day but no rain or wind as yet.

Is oddpins knitting where you use a very fat needle and a littlun?
Def going to try Kinseys method if I've got a big enough needle, or Jean's if I can find a ruler. I've got one of those kits and the little circles are diddy and fiddly.0 -

MANY MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU SPOT AN ERROR Ta!Pam.:hello:0 -
Oh Lorna how awful, one of those things would be bad enough. Good that your shoulder's a bit better but don't go overdoing it and making it bad again, even though you want to help everyone else. I do hope your brother has improved by now, and as for SIL's sister, word's fail me. Fingers crossed for your mum, and hugs to you.0

Hi peeps,
thank you for all your good wishes, you are always so kind and supportive, just dropping in always makes me feel a bit better.
I'm OK today - been to doc's again today, he's very good - just listens to my saga then makes his recommendations, I have to be good and take all my pills, back for monitoring in 2 months.
A MORAL TALE
ok, I found a lovely "kimono" type jumper pattern for little babes and as I had a lovely peach wool, thought I'd give it a go for PamsPals great, great niece, born last Sunday.
So here I go - its a challenge - knitted "top down" in the round - but feeling cocky about it. All goes beautifully, the pattern is very clear I get the body done no problem, THEN  I'm supposed to pick up the 32 stitches for the sleeve on dpn's:eek:. That'll teach me - I hate dpn's - I don't have the right size, 'cos the main part is all one piece I can't cheat and knit them flat then sew them up - so ......... I've picked up the stitches using 2 short circular needles and I've managed to knit 5 rows so far, ok I'll be able to finish it - but it would have been so much easier if I'd read the whole pattern first - I could have cheated very quickly.
The moral of this story is read all the pattern before you start knitting..........
'bye for now
luv
