I have so far but it doesn't have to. I might try and enlist DS1 with them as I find the little ones are really fiddly.

  • evening all...the shawl is done but the lovely and helpful big knitters in cardiff will fix my attempt to even out the cast on as it was tighter than the cast off...needess to say I was overly enthusiastic and snapped the wool so they are fixing it for me.
Half way through the next square which is pink and fluffy and I hope will be ok...

hi, wonder if anyone could help with a quick question. I am knitting a necktie for my little boy and was trying to work out the length it should be for him. He is three years old. Adult versions of the patterns I have seen are 52 inches long, currently it is about 30 inches long. Opinions appreciated please! Thanks.

Tricky. Maybe stick the working stitches on a stitch holder temporarily and try tying it up and see what it looks like?
I'm improvising a posh smoothie hat and it's taking aaaages - and I still need to knit more petals for it. And there are ends to sew in all over the place :rotfl:

Hi everyone. Up early after I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep.

K2tog - that's the only problem when you get ambitious with the IS hats - sewing in all the ends! I've done some plain and some in patterns and sewing in the ends is really tiresome. I've done two plain ones based on the super-stretchy preemie hat - just knit two, purl two rib, and they are really cute and just as stretchy as the bigger ones. I want to have a go at the Iceland hat that someone made last year - with ear flaps and plaits for tying - it's so sweet, probably fiddly, but worth having a go. I've not put any bobbles on mine yet but when I did last year, I left two long ends which I pulled through to the wrong side, knotted together a few times, then sewed the ends in as usual. Also, I know that last year I bought some ready-made bobbles (which you can get quite cheaply from pound shops) and sewed them on. I've made a couple of top-knot hats, too, which saves having to decide about a bobble!

Shez - the little hats are addictive once you get going, aren't they? And they are perfect for using up odds and ends of wool.

DON - I've just googled 'neck ties for children' and found that a toddler's tie is approximately 10" long (14" for a 'youth'). You may have to unpick some of it or save it for a man! Here's a picture http://www.babyultimate.com/13981.html

    Well, time for another cuppa.

thanks for that Kathy! I think I have maybe been a bit dumb! because I have knitted a proper tie that has to be tied each time he would wear it, I probably would have been much better knitting one like the ones in your link! :o

Thing is they did have ties like that from Marks and Spencers and they are sized for ages 2-4 but they are just too tight around their necks so I thought I could just make my own. Typical of me though, making it more complicated than necessary!

    Thanks for that link. :D

DON - I'm wondering if you could make the tie in two parts which join at the neck either with a button on one part and a button-hole on the other, or even some velcro? TBH, I didn't realise the ties in the link didn't tie in the traditional way! That's me not being fully awake when I found the picture!

hi kathy, will do some trial and error I think, maybe will try it both ways and see what works the best! I will post up some pictures of the finished tie if it looks ok!
