    morning all

maytaurus - good to see you here last night
lorna - do you ever get a chance to sleep (whilst i was tossing and turning last night i was thinking about you and wondering if you must be tired all the time. you really are a very good person).
shelley - glad to hear that you are getting a little better. i know what you mean about trying your new "toys" - i have tried all of my new crochet hooks!
pips mum - well done on the blanket. i am making squares for them too, but must be honest and say that i am trying to find someone who will take them over in a bundle. for future reference, if you sew them together, they have to pay duty on them when they collect them in south africa, but if they go as squares, they are an unfinished item so no duty is due.
kathy - i know what you mean about cows - my DH and i are both vegetarians, but when we see the lovely cows in the fields next to our house in france, we see what a great time they have and think that they have lived well, so it isn't quite so cruel to eat them as they have had a good life.

oh well, its time to bite the bullet - one coffee and out the door today - first day of my new french course, i am very nervous as i always worry that i am going to be the thickest person in the class and forget everything i know .... oh well, it will help me when i want to have a go at those lazy builders.

have a wonderful sunny day today everyone, but beware and take care as its supposedly going to be very hot.

DPixie - I've been really surprised by how I'm coming to grips with the French language, now that I am here. I learned at school but, of course, you don't retain a lot of it, do you?! Dealing with the French - neighbours, shop assistants, the local farmer, and so on - really makes you learn fast! I even handled an entire call to the electricity company the other day in French - I really impressed myself! Even my DH is getting to grips with it; in fact he's a lot bolder than I am and isn't afraid to start a conversation with anyone! With his regular trips to the hardware and building suppliers, he's learning builders' terms fast! It also helps that a good friend of ours has been here for five years and, last year, she married a handsome French chef - we have very interesting conversations with him in 'Franglais'! He's learning English while we're learning French! Not all the English he has learnt is polite, though, and some of our rudest Anglo-Saxon words sound really funny with a French accent!

What 'variety' of cows do you have next door to you in France? Ours are local to the area; they're called Parthenaise - the farmer and his wife are very proud of them, and love being told how beautiful they are! The farmer himself is here now; he's mowing the grass on the building plots we have for sale here. He usually will only take a bottle of whiskey, and that we have to force on him! The grass is so long that we'll have to insist - in French - that he takes some euros, too.

By the way, I find Google Translate excellent for help with writing letters in French, and for finding the right way to word things in conversation.

Well, I've really waffled on - I;d better get on with some work!

I didnt realise that, I had looked at their postal instructions and it just says they have to pay duty if it is over 66lbs or if you send it by registered post.
HSthanks.gif for nice comments about blanket all.

Maytaurus - yes the sewing up was a bit of a chore! Especially as you have to have it all gathered up on your lap whilst you do it, nice in winter not in summer!!

I had a bizarre and probably wrong idea about the STs. I am selling my flat and have found lots of rubber backed carpet off cuts that for some strange reason I had decided to keep. Would they work as liners for in a softer covering? I just thought they would be absorbant, right thickness and waterproof backed too. Let me know your thoughts

Glad all the poorly people are on the mend but sending some more.....

  • Hi Everybody, Long time no here..................SIL and her new boyfriend came for - a long weekend - that was on the 18th June - they were obviously having a fantastic time they only left yesterday..........boy am I worn to a frazzle!
