    Depends on the airline
For example you could take the AA from Heathrow at 8.30 arriving at 11am into JFK and continue on at 16.50 arriving Vegas at 7.35 which is ample time to hop on the Airtrain into Manhattan-have lunch -trip up the Empire State or Top of the Rock and a visit to Macys and still be back in time (I've actually done this on these flights and it was really nice to break up the journey and was no more tiring than a shorter layover-it's the sitting around waiting I find exhausting)

I loathe that long direct flight but find changing planes -even if it's only a couple of hours layover makes it far more pleasent. I always get outside-even if it's only for a short time-just to breathe some unfiltered air. I really notice the difference if I don't have time to do this. Personal preference for sure though-we're all different.

I'd seriously consider Boston for a couple of nights -shortest transatlantic flight-Boston's a really easy city to get around-you wouldn't need a car and it's a total contrast to Vegas. You can do the Duck tours in Boston, there's lots of shopping, the Boston tea-party and the city is built on the water so some nice water views
Fares wise you'll probably need to book an open jaw ticket UK Boston returning Las Vegas UK with a domestic ticket in between. Will probably work out slightly more than a direct flight but not much.

  • Can you advise on the best way to get your hotel when you arrive at LV airport? Staying at the Monte Carlo and just wondered what the most reasonable way to get there. Thanks, go on Wednesday!

How many in your party? A taxi would be probably about $15 (tell them not to take the tunnel)...a shuttle will be $6 per person but will take longer...personally I would take a taxi.

i certainly would recommend Boston. Had 4 nights there last year and really enjoyed the place. its very european and has a lot of old biuldings within the new modern skyscrapers. it contains a trail through the city that you can do by following a line in the pavement.this takes you to all the historic parts of the city invoved during the war of independence and the boston tea party and all that.also found the Cheers bar quite interesting.Qiute compact , Boston is a great short break trip and flight from uk about 6 hours (way back took 4 and half hours!).
Only other place i have stayed on your list is Orlando. Definately not relaxing when we were there as we hit disney and the parks etc. good thing about Orlando is you can find pretty cheap accomadation but did find it a bit grotty downtown.

boston is lush, clam chowder, home of cheers
    nice airport too.
    would second this reccomendation
  • There's only 2 of us! Ok, I'll remember not to go the tunnel way! Thanks very much :)

Hi, I've booked my mum into Planey Hollywood for 10 nights at the end of the month. Not sure the pool area is going to be here scene, can you use other hotels pools, do you have to pay for this, and which ones would you recommend? She's stayed in luxor before.

Generally you have to be a guest of the hotel to (officially) use the pool...some hotels are less strict than others about checking room keys so you do see reports of people getting into other pools without being a guest...I think most of those you can pay to get into aren't going to be the sort of environment your mum will be after...

As ferf says, you generally need to be a guest to use any hotel pool. However we were able to wander round the pool at the Flamingo and I *think* it is open to non-guests in the afternoons, but I couldn't swear to this.

Looks like you are right - according to their website room keys are only required until 1pm...really cool if you can go in and have a look - I never knew that...and we'll totally be having a wander around on our next trip just to see what all the fuss is about.
