I know rescue centres do wonderful jobs....I support them the best I can.....but I wont bother wasting my time getting a dog from one when I can get one for the same price or less, younger and the actual breed I want from a breeder.
It stands to reason doesnt it? People arent any different with children.
Last May we had to have Holly, our beautiful lurcher cross, put to sleep. We had got her 12 years ago from a local rescue centre and she came to us with Mac, a sheepdog/staffie cross who was 10 weeks old. We were all devastated to be without her, but in September we thought that it was time to give another dog a loving home.
We went to an animal sanctuary near here and asked them for a dog who would get along with Mac, preferably not a puppy as most people choose those. The staff brought out two dogs to walk along with Mac, sadly there seemed to be a bit of an ego clash with the male, but Tysha got along fine with him, so we reserved her and as soon as the home check was done we went to get her.
Tysha is nine years old, a long haired retriever cross, and is the most loving and affectionate dog. She had been in the centre for some time, possibly overlooked because of her age. We love her so much, and it it hurts to think that such a lovely dog would be overlooked because she was older.
If you are wanting to give a dog a loving home, please don`t just pass by the older dogs, they are so worthwhile. You may not have them quite so long as a younger dog, but there are no guarantees in life, and sadly we have heard of several younger dogs having to be put to sleep because of illness.
Please don`t just dismiss the oldies, they have lots of love to give. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -
Sorry, forgot to say, is it too late to offer a small item for the auction? The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0

We had Beau when he was 12 years old - for 4 years and during that time he was the happiest liveliest little dog in the world. As you say, a youngster can leave you much earlier - it breaks your heart however long you have them with you - but surely its better that than leaving a poor dog in a kennel for the rest of their lives often when they have been much loved but have lost an elderly owner.
The oldies club have dogs over 7 years old for rehoming - they are dogs from rescues all over the country - I am pleased to say Ive placed a couple of them with elderly gentlemen who have lost their dogs and who would be thought unsuitable as owners by most rescues. As long as the elderly person can care for the animal and has back up to look after the dog should they become ill then many a happy partnership can be forged
Bilberry, re the item for the auction - the auction ends on 24 Jan, but knowing the members on there you would still get bids

I rescued my little Che from a pen in the garden of an abandoned house - after over a week of watching for the owners return, and a friend and I going down and feeding her. I was goingto get her out and take her to a rescue, as the RSPCA wouldnt get involved - cos she was being fed! However, she ended up staying somehow!
The vet estimated she was about seven, so I only expected to heve her in my life for a few years - a decade later she popped off in her sleep, lively and lovely to the last. I could have bought a pup and had less time with it.
She was just a nondescript little scruffy ginger dog but she had the best personality going!
However, she was exactly the sort of dog that may have ended up being PTS or hard to home, as an older, scruff of a little cross breed - however, as a dog she was such a character and a clever little soul - my dad swore blind she could tell what people were thinking just by looking at them!!!
oldies rule!! this is Che aged about 14 here -

Would you be kind enough to tell me how I could put this item (and possibly any other unwanted gift too) on to the auction? Sorry, have my stupid head on today :rotfl:
Thank you also for sharing your story about Beau, it is lovely. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

She looks beautiful to me! We love all dogs (all animals really) and they are all beautiful in their own way. They have such distinct personalities too, and such affection to give.
Thank you for posting a picture of Che, it is so lovely. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0
