Japanese Akita eats cats

if a dog is inclined to chase/attack/kill cats, it will do it wherever it can and therefore I think it better that as many steps as possible are taken to disuade this dog from cat chasing anywhere in the future. I think importance has to be placed on all aspects of this and not treat the garden differently. Imo. I think the OP has a duty (especially now the dog has savoured the chase and been rewarded by the catch) to try to stop the dog from doing this, anywhere.
However I freely admit to being no expert and I think this is what the OP needs...expert advice. It seems to be too emotive a subject to be discussed in a calm straightforward way and although there are many good, experienced dog owners on here, I think a trainer/behaviourist would be a good source of advice for the OP to consider. The only thing I think we can all agree on is that this must be treated seriously and cant happen again.
Totally agree...:T

Like who the hell are you to decide if what she does is good enough??????????????????
Get over yourself. Where the hell does the OP "BRAG"? Dont forget this is the written word, you have no real idea of how the post was meant to have come across. Myself, I read it as a concerned poster asking for advice aaaand untill the op is in front of me talking to me face to face I shall give her the benefit of the doubt.
What I wont presume to do is to JUDGE
Quite clearly as the OP has let the dog escape and kill twice then she doesn't know how to secure the garden. As you say she came on asking for advice.
Lets see. How about this scenario. You have a piece of work for university that you have to do. You don't know if it will pass. I say "Pass it here and I'll tell you if I think it's good enough!" That is a perfectly reasonable thing to say if I have the experience to pass judgment.
I own 6 dogs and others on here own dogs including Akitas. I think that means we have enough experience between us to judge whether any changes are likely to be effective. Clearly the OP wouldn't know because A) she wouldn't have asked for advice in the first place and B)the dog wouldn't have escaped at least twice already. Any respect for the OP dwindled when I read that it had happened twice outside of her garden. Regardless we offer help![/quote]
When you become a world authority on all things dog - then you may perhaps have that right - but of now you don't - nor do anyone of us on this board.
And excuse me for pointing out, the help was offered AFTER the events - so don't get on your high horse here.
Now leave the OP in peace, stop nit picking and looking a row, you answered her original post and until - thats all that was asked from you
Im not getting into a fight here with you as I really do have a life to get on with,. I just wanted to say you really dont have the moral high ground here to be telling others what it good enough0 -
Here's another very good idea, how about you READ THE BLOODY POST PROPERLY!!!
Say what you want, i really dont care, at the end of the day my intrests are the dog, as this op is not telling the truth to anyone, nor is she sorting the problem here u go then ALISOJO- HERES AN IDEA PUT A LOCK ON THE BLOODY GATE , is that better,0 -

You just answered that yourself;)
This whole thread seems to have become a witch hunt and moved so far away from the OP that Im wondering why in fact its not been locked.
UKTL - you were yourself just a few weeks ago victim of people jumping to conclusions and conjecture about yourself here, Id have thought you may have had at least the common sense not to do it to another poster
Not having been on here much over the Christmas period it has saddened me how a board that was always pretty moderate, usually friendly and always full of helpful and non judgmental posters has degenerated to this. Guess this is what happens when the rest of the boards are so quiet.
Bowing out and going to play with the grown ups now0 -

 No, not really. You could have said please.
I'm not going to fight with you over this but your way of how to go about making a point isn't helpful to a serious subject such as this. The assumptions you make and your use of capitals only serve to take the emphasis away from the actual issue. Is the OP going to read your post and learn something helpful from it which will positively affect the dog? No, human nature will mean she will read it and it will put her back up which will then likely result in her becoming defensive.
I dont see how any of that will be helpful to the dog. Who, at the end of the day, is following his natural urges and is completely at the mercy of an owner who is not (at least as of yet) completely responsible enough to deal with him and curb his unnacceptable instincts.Herman - MP for all!0 -

IF the cats are killed on your own property, there hasn't been any laws broken....morally if you have a dog who will kill a cat IMHO you should take care not to allow the dog out unsupervised even in your garden but that is a different matter. Obviously, in this case the dog was off the owners property at the time she killed two of the cats so yes, then the law was broken as the OP had a dog that wasn't "under control" which is in breach of the DDA (Which as gomer correctly pointed out applies to ALL dogs)
Another point, despite the impression that the RSPCA often like to give they cannot PTS any animal without a court order or the owners consent unless a vet certifies that is it required on humane grounds......which wouldn't apply in a case like this.
Just to make clear, I don't think that it is acceptable for anyone to say that it's ok that a dog kills cats.....but on the other hand if us cat owners let our cats out we know that there at risk of getting injured/killed by cars, dogs etc....one of those things that we have to balance the risks against quality of life for a cat that likes to go out.0 -

Fair enough - but surely only on whats been posted in black and white not on pure conjecture?
And actually this board ISNT for discussionWelcome to the MSE pets and pets care board :hello:
this is a board dedicated to pets moneysaving,
the place to discuss the best value pet insurance, any good offers on pet food you spot, where to buy flea treatment and worming tablets, where the best kennels are etc etc
Perhaps the strong opinions and discussion are best suited to the arms?0
