Japanese Akita eats cats

I am going to go against the flow of the posts I have read and say I would have the dog put to sleep.
Despite my name I have dog and cats and children and if my dog could do that I would never rest worrying how long before he turned on one of my children.
As for the house with the Staffie and the cats you have got to rehome one or other as it is only a matter of time before the staffie gets hold of one of the cats. If you rang the RSPCA and asked their advice on this I bet they would say you have to rehome either the cats or the dog .
Incidentally of the people whose dogs attack cats - did you get the dog as a pup and bring it into a house with older cats?0 -
Well i kind of see where you are coming from but you have to bare in mind that just because the dog has killed cats doesn't mean it is a danger to children or anyone else, if it had only been the once then i wouldn't even think of euthansia myself but the real underlying issue here is the question of just how committed the op is to managing the dog properly & making sure it never happens again and going on the case history so far & the fact it's taken 11 years for the op to realize just how bad this is i have my doubts.0
-
The op seems to think its more of a laughing matter that her dog is killing cats! I doubt very much that the op will suddenly change into a responsible dog owner after all these years! I understand the first cat wandered into her garden, but to let it happen again outside of the garden twice! And dont forget these are other peoples much loved pets!0

If this dog had attacked a sheep the farmer would have shot it. The other day I heard of a young horse killed by dogs.0

Patchwork.... thats terrible!0

What is terrible, Mely, it is true - don't you know that. Why is the OP posting this - the should have just contacted the RSPCA for advice.
Under the Act there is a defence available to someone who is the subject of civil proceedings for killing or injuring a dog that was worrying or about to worry livestock. The defence can be used where there were no other means of ending or preventing the worrying or where the dog that had done the worrying was still in the vicinity and not under control and there were no practicable means of establishing ownership
taken from the Animals Act 1971
The OP is liable on reading the DEFRA publications under numerous laws for civil prosecution and potentially liable for large claims. If the cat was a pedigree that could be a VERY large bill.0 -

As for the comment someone made on page 1and of course the fact that under the DDA she must be under control at all times by law.0 -
Oh please, dog kills cat, doesn't mean it's going to lead on to anything further. My Akita's have had a cat or two in the past that were stupid enough to come and try doing their business in my garden, but that hasn't led to them turning into wild child killing beats.
As for the comment someone made on page 1
Might want to check your facts on the DDA, the Akita isn't and has never been on the DDA, it's misinformation like this that causes breeds to get a bad name that they don't deserve.
As far as I know the DDA says all Dogs (Whatever breed) must be under control in a public place. So not running about the village cat killing. Not sure if that's in control as in not making anyone think it may bite them, or as in totally under control.
Totally agree it doesn't at all mean they'll go on to hurt children, but as some have said if it's running about loose in the village & a child is in it's garden etc holding a cat, what then?0 -
I have a Japanese Akita and a problem.
Several years ago she killed a cat, didn't eat it just killed it. It came in my garden and i just assumed it was animal instincts taking over. (The owner attempted to sue me for vet costs but it failed)
Then about a year ago she killed another, someone had left my gate open (i have a huge garden where she roams free) and she went out and killed a cat. Then when i realised she was gone i called her back and she just came back. No problems at all, as if it was all in a days work.
Christmas eve i noticed she wasn't in the garden and she didnt respond to me calling her, i went looking for her but could not find her, when i got home she was waiting, covered in blood and smelling of cats urine.
Regarding her temprement she is so soft, she has never so much as sniffed at a human, i have 3 young children who ride on her back and she loves it. When they play in the garden she follows them from the front round to the back as if she is keeping an eye on them. She is aged 11.
My question is obviously its awful to think that some family came home Christmas eve and had a dead cat waiting for them (i tried to find out who it was to no avail) Apart from restraining her how can i stop this increasingly popular habit she has?
Any genuine help would be apprecaited.
Heres a very good idea how about FIXING THE HOLE IN THE BLOODY FENCE!!! you no the dog is getting out and its your job as a responsible akita owner which clearly you are not to keep you dog protected aswell as other peoples animals, what makes me more sick is people like you get thses fab dogs and then because of owners like you they get put down because you carnt be bothered or are to thick to fix the hole in the fence wouldnt that be a start??? not rocket science is it?? then you have the cheek to ask for help on a site its people like you who give these dogs a bad name the only positive outcome i can see is that beautiful dog is took off you, you clearly do not deserve an akita or any other dog, and everybody else who has made a joke of this storie i doubt very much you would be laughing or joking about it if 1 this was your dog or 2 it was your cat that was killed!!!!!
As for the person who said if their dog attacked any other pet it would be gone you would get rid straight away no you wouldnt do you no how hard it is to get rid of a family pet that you love you would forgive it and give it another chance , i have never heard so much bulls**t in my life , just wish all people like you would leave akitas alone your so quick to judge!!!!0 -
There's no hole in the fence, the Dog has somehow got out of the gate 2x  We've suggested a gate that auto closes/locks etc even getting Akita Welfare to check it's secured. The OP went off on holiday apparently so maybe we'll never know. Can't believe it got to three times0
