it just angers me that this has been allowed tohappen more than once? if it was my akita i woulg take him out in the garden on the lead till the gate or fence problem was sorted, my akita when he was a pup used to get through the holes in the hedge so untill i got it sorted with fencing i went out with him on his lead because i knew he would grow so fast and my neighbours next door to my right have got a little staffy, and to my left its bungalows which are homes to the elderly and one has got 2tiny breed dogs and as an owner its my responsibility to make sure my dog causes no harm to them, ive never known an akita to kill cats my akita plays so gently with my kitten i think if their intoduced correctly and no jelousy is occured i carnt see why this akita would want to kill cats? once ok a mistake, but twice i wouldnt let it happen and a third time is takin the you no what. But i will say i dont blame the dog.0

The OP needs to get a padlock for the gate. One that has a code so she doesn't have to hunt for the key. She also needs a self closing mechanism on it. The 2 gate entry/exit system it probably only useful if the dog were pushing past people to get out but if this were the case the OP would have used recall to get it back.
I don't think the OP will do anything to prevent this happening again because it sounds like she just wanted to bragg about what her dog does. Of course if I'm wrong she can always post photos of the improvements she's made and we can tell her if we think they'll be good enough0 -
i agree i honestly dont think she will do owt about it either it sounds to me like shes let it go on for far to long as it is if it happened once with me i tell you it wouldnt of happened again i just have never heard owt like it in my life, if pets are introduced right they get on ? however some owners are dog lovers only and train their pets to attack and im sorry to say but i feel that this dog has been wound up, and bless it it doesnt no better and thats a shame.0

The OP doesn't actually own a Cat, we've not been told if she's had the Dog from a Pup (In which case was it socialised with Cats) or not. Ok fair enough ONCE when a Cat jumps in the garden, but after that? We also don't know if the Dog has got out more than 2x. My Dog lives with a Cat & when we're out would most definitely chase one, no idea what she'd do if she caught one. She's fine with the house cat (Supervised of course) but would chase so she's kept to a lead for that & other reasons almost always.
If it were me i'd have an Akita rescue person come to check the garden & say what needs to be done, what type & height of fencing/wall etc & i'd do it right away, the gate would be padlocked at all times if everyone in the house couldn't be trusted to lock it.
Also if I couldn't guarantee cats couldn't get in the garden, the Dog would be supervised & on a 30ft lunge line when out OR Muzzled. (In the garden) What gets me is the OP is on holiday & we don't know if the Dog is kennelled or with a sitter, if with a sitter do they know what it's like!0 -
Without me sounding terribly rude is there any chance we could open a seperate thread to post these photo's of our dogs on? It's making it very difficult to read the remaining posts on here because the pictures are too big and are stretching the pages all out of proportion.0

Oh please, dog kills cat, doesn't mean it's going to lead on to anything further. My Akita's have had a cat or two in the past that were stupid enough to come and try doing their business in my garden, but that hasn't led to them turning into wild child killing beats.
As for the comment someone made on page 1
Might want to check your facts on the DDA, the Akita isn't and has never been on the DDA, it's misinformation like this that causes breeds to get a bad name that they don't deserve.
Hold your horses mate. Nobody said the Akita was listed on the DDA, just that the DDA requires ALL dogs regardless of breed to be kept under control in public & people seem to be forgetting the op has already committed a criminal offence more than once under the DDA anyway by allowing the dog to be out of control in public in the first place & that's before it even went after the cats.
She might not realize it but she can still be prosecuted for that anyway.0 -

Of course we don't know if the sitter is any more responsible than the OP.0 -

Here's another very good idea, how about you READ THE BLOODY POST PROPERLY!!!Herman - MP for all!0 -
I realise this has been said before, but it is all down to owner error.
My Akitas are kept in the house while I am out, they do not have a free rein. They are large powerful dogs who need a strong leadership, and a secure garden! My dogs have never met a cat, as nobody in the family has one, I wouldnt trust them with anything small and loose, as Im sure they would chase it.
These dogs already have a bad name, and do not need more bad publicity. I know my dogs chase things, usually crisp packets blowing in the wind, all dogs chase things, they just must always be kept under control, by responsible people.0 -
Absolutely akitaowned,I too have an akita, pics on this thread, she is never left to her own devices, and she is good with other animals,it really about responsibility issues with these people,if your'e not going to be a responsible owner DON'T have a large powerful dog!!0
