The other thing that concerns me, thinking about this, is the OP is on holiday right now yes? If Chaya (My mutt) killed a Cat/s & was a known escape artist/cat killer, I COULD NOT go on holiday until such time as it was resolved unless the dog was in kennels. Is the dog at a boarding kennels or with a pet sitter do we know? I hope they know what it's like & are more responsible than the OP! If it were me the holiday would be cancelled until such time as the dog was 200% secured

Well they can't be much worse, can they:rolleyes:

I find it disgusting that the second & third cat was killed (I don't hold her responsible for the first, the only blame she has attached to that is she was too stupid to learn anything from it).

I find her "jokes" & playing down of the seriousness of these deaths as abhorrent.

What if a child had been walking past carrying a kitten or a cat, when the dog was loose?

That was my point in my first post, or just in their front garden with their cat/kitten.

Doesn't bear thinking about :!! I'm also glad I didn't witness this as I have seen a horrific RTA I was part of involving a Cat & still think of it today which must be about 8+yrs later

Tiger that would haunt me too!
  • I personally think the owner of the dog is irresponsible.

Your garden should be secure & you should be checking on your dog frequantly.

It is a fact of life that dogs chase cats, however to take this situation so lightly you are yet again giving the akita a bad name.
I own two, one is cat friendly one is not, you know the situation so be responsible secure your garden & get some common sense.

has the OP put any thought into the well-being of her Akita whilst he is out roaming and killing cats? for example, if i saw a dog attempting to kill a cat (or anything else), i would do my utmost to release the distressed cat (or whatever) from the dog's jaws...and if that meant kicking the dog's head until it let go, or worse, killing the dog, then that is what I would have to do...and i am sure i am not the only person who would take this action if faced with this situation.

so, if the OP REALLY loves her dog, keep it in your SECURE garden and ensure it never escapes again. you have a dog that is considered dangerous, you really need to take greater care.

OK, lets put it another way - If you look at the overwhealming majority of attacks where children are killed by thier parents Rottweilers you will find that almost every single incident occurs within a family that was barely even capable of bringing a child up properly let alone a dog - when was the last time you ever heard of a Rottweiler owned by an educated middle class family attacking & killing one of thier own children? What's different there then - the breed of dog or the type of owner?
    quote]

WOW...the class thing rears its ugly head... When was the last time you heard a lowerclass coucil dad allowing his daugher to be hit by a 4X4 while she drives her newly given quad????? Or the posty attacked by 2 Higherclass rotties, LOL lets not go here.. Simple truth. DOG's ARE HUNTERS it doesn't matter if it is a Shih Tzu or an AKITA.. Both the Shih Tzu (or the pomeranian owned by an old lady) and the AKITA and all the things in the middle should be socialized with humans and other animals. Should this dog be put down??? No but the owner should be prosecuted for failing to controle and supervise it propperly. This post would do good on the JAWT (Japanes Akita Welfare Trust)forum (http://www.jawt.co.uk/forum/).

P.S. please enlighten me what is a Troll??? In my day they where shrek like things that stink....nothing to do with a webforum LOL

Talk about missing the point. LOL

I was just using that as an example to illustrate a simple point. I'd like to think most people here were sensible enough to have worked that out.

Class is irrelevent - the point i was making is that it is the type of owner that is the problem. It's not just a happy coincidence that these attacks only seem to occur within a certain 'type' of family that are not exactly the most intelligent people on the planet, usually the sort of familiy that shouldn't even have a dog full stop, let alone a breed that could potentially kill if raised by an inadequate owner, that was the point i was making, but hey what would i know about raising Rottweilers - i've only kept them for 20 years. ;)

If you look at all the attacks where children have died you will notice the owners of the dogs are not exactly your average responsible & intelligent dog owners, instead when the storm blows over & the facts come out we start to discover the dog belonged to either a teenage mum who couldn't be bothered to supervise the dog around her baby, a drug dealer who used the dog as a weapon for status, or a brain dead caveman who bought the dog down the pub for a fiver because he wanted a guard dog that looked hard - not exactly what you could call ideal people to be owning a dog like a Rottweiler in the first place.

Look at the title of her post "Japanese Akita eats cats" !!!!!!!

Deliberately provocative, trying to make a joke of it:confused:

She is trying to make it sound like an unpleasant habit he has:mad:

Rather than her being a careless unfit owner, who has a large powerful dog she allows to roam:confused:

As a very responsible Akita owner,I must admit I do get fed up of the bad press about what I would call a tiny minority of akita owners and I do agree that this kind of dramatisation does not help the breed, yes unfortunately some of the breed don't get on with cats, but mine has been brought up with then, and as I have said previously, this research should be done before getting certain types of dogs,my OH and I were months reaserching the breed and visiting breeders before we decided on our girl, therefore it went with the territory that we had to provide a secure area for her before she arrived with us.

Nevertheless, she has been properly socialised and we can take her anywhere, she loves meeting people and fuss, from other dogs/cats/humans,she is used to this,we didnt want to bring up a large dog to have behavioural problems.

As for the weight issue and control,my dog is nearly as heavy as I am,and is so disciplined,a squeek out of me is all she needs to be brought under control if she gets excited, there are certainly far smaller dogs in my village that worry me behaviour wise, one is a very aggresive bull terrier, my dog can't stand its growling,My girl is definately not a fighter, puppy training, discipline and some common sense is what is required, but at the start!!

I'd love to show you all my beautiful girl, who really does stop traffic, but I don't know how to load up photos anyone help??

This is just another idiotic proposal by those who know nothing about animals. I expect they want it to mean dogs kept for fighting that are known to be a problem - but this could mean friendly pets that have chased (and caught) a squirrel in the park!
If that "friendly" pet cannot be recalled, it's out of control. Simple.
