Are we really surprised, shocked and outraged that a dog has killed a cat - or three cats or even thirty cats? Isn't it pretty much instinctive in dogs?
In the same way, isn't it instinctive in cats to kill birds? Or mice? Or rats? So should a cat be subject to the same rules and destroyed or retrained for doing so?
I have a dog who doesn't chase/kill cats - or birds, chickens, sheep, horses etc .... but that's because he was raised as a puppy amongst all these animals and trained from day one not to chase them - not even in that fun way that puppies like to.
Animals are predators afterall ...... isn't this just part of nature?
Genuinely confused and not just trying to pick a fight
It'a a valid point but the issue here is that that breed is known for it's predatory nature and the flippant way that the owner is treating the fact it has killed 3.
Not all dogs want to go out and kill things so I would say it's not in all dog's nature - but it is in this breed. You just have to read the responsible posts from Dutch, who also owns the breed, to see the difference.
I personally also have an issue with the flippant tone of the owner and the way that 'the gate was left open'. No matter what breed of dog, you have a duty to ensure it's and other animals safety and there was a clear disregard for this by the owner.0 -
I'm not surprised a large powerful dog has killed these cats.
I'm DISGUSTED that the OP lets her Japanese Akita wander the streets alone.
Hey Mrs E, Can I just stop you in your tracks right there! Japanese Akitas and American Akitas are not all Cat killers ( see my picture before) Nor are all Pit bulls child killers ( See the little rascal movies). If you would have said:
"I'm DISGUSTED that OP lets her DOG wander the streets alone" you would make sence. by focussing on the Akita you have made the knee jerk panic reaction that has given us a completely useless dangerous dogs act.0 -
I think the difference, Debt Free Chick is that the cats are someone's pets. If one of my cats for example escaped and got into a neighbour's aviary and killed their pet birds i would 1) pay for any costs involved, and offer to make the aviary more secure 2) be ashamed and horrified 3) kitty leads would be required and if they didn't like it then I'm afraid kitties would have to stay indoors.
Because it is MY responsibility to ensure that MY pets don't cause any preventable suffering to anyone else.Save me from spending...

I accept that dogs chase and that dogs will kill cats ,the point is why is she allowing it to happen when it could easily be prevented by responsible pet ownership.0 -

I never said they were.
But "some" dogs hate cats & large &/or strong dogs are able to kill cats IF they don't like them.
So I'm not surprised at the idea of a dog killing a cat, I don't even think it should be put down, I think it should be homed with an owner that will control it.
I DIDN'T focus on the breed for the cat bit, I made reference to the breed to express my disgust that a dog of this size is allowed to wander.
You will see I put a paragraph in between the sentences.0 -

3 times!! 3 ruddy times.....that poor family finding a mangled cat on Christmas Eve.....and it was all so so preventable:mad:0 -
Good luck getting a Cav..... just make sure the breeder has checked mum and dad for syringomyelia:eek: . (Make sure you get to see the results from C.T. scans)
lol I have a thread on one of the first few pages that's a few months old now & still going, right from me deciding I want a dog, researching breeds to decide a Cav, deciding maybe a Cav x (Due to health issues) & finally going to rescue 4 weeks ago & coming home with the most perfect dog ever, a Cav? No, a Staffie x lmfao & she is everything I could wish for & a thousand times more & while her & my Cat aren't on touching terms & aren't left unsupervised they can be in the same room with neither restrained & both relax & sleep in their relevant areas without pestering each other!
And I was pleased to be matched to her as I LOVE Staffs & she's the spitting image of one & comes with the licks too!0 -
I agree with MrsE`s comment on allowing the AKITA to get out of the garden. Its the thread topic and its proven to be a cat killer.0

The other thing that concerns me, thinking about this, is the OP is on holiday right now yes? If Chaya (My mutt) killed a Cat/s & was a known escape artist/cat killer, I COULD NOT go on holiday until such time as it was resolved unless the dog was in kennels. Is the dog at a boarding kennels or with a pet sitter do we know? I hope they know what it's like & are more responsible than the OP! If it were me the holiday would be cancelled until such time as the dog was 200% secured0
-
And, let's say the dog had killed a child or mauled it or injured or whatever, would it have got a second chance or would the OP have secured it (Assuming it wasn't PTS)? If the answer is the dog would be secured, why hasn't it been already, is it because it's 'just' a cat? Cause there's no such thing as JUST a cat!0
