To clarify when I said it should be destroyed - I ws feeling quite emotive and I am not sure if it COULD be re-trained at such an old age.

If it could then I agree wholeheartedly with youe Mrs E :)

I doubt it can be retrained, its got the taste for it.

But lots of dogs are potentional cat killers, all the owner is expected to do is keep them under control in public areas.

This the OP has failed to do, not once but twice.

In all honestly I wonder has he got out twice or killed two of the times he got out:rolleyes:

I suspect rather than his sucess rate being 100% he gets out often & kills occasionally. Its not that easy for a dog to kill a cat, they got to catch it first.

If that had been my Ted (see pic left) he tore apart I dread to think what I would have done to the OP (but I would have had a go at the same). She forgets that peoples cats mean as much to them as she "claims" her dog does to her.

I was suprised that the OP didn't immediately get in a trainer/behaviourist or supervise the dog on a lead at all times after the first incident.

    I'm not surprised - I'm disgusted.

She should have meekly paid the vet bills and got something done but according to her - it's 'animal instinct'

    I mean...really:mad:

I own 3 dogs one of which is a german shepherd ,she is good with cats and lives with 2 ,but she loves to chase and as a large dog I have made sure that she can not get out of my garden she has a large kennel with a large run attached I also have a 6 foot fence around the area of the kennel ,the gate's of which are padlocked so they cannot be opened from the outside result happy dogs ,happy cats and I can rest knowing my dogs are secure ,in my opinion this could have been done the first time it happened ,why wait until the 3rd time I would be heartbroken if my dog had done this once never mind 3 times.

I agree it has the taste for it too hence my saying it should be destroyed. I'm no expert by any means but I would think that at 11 it's way too old to change it ways.

I'm sorry Mrs E but for some reason my I don't see people's avators (v odd - just this forum:confused: ) but I know what you mean.

I think I am so het up about this as I am thinking how I would feel if this happened to my beloved bunny who gets to roam daily in his special 'bunny garden' which was lovingly fenced in a part of my garden for...and more to the point how my daughter would feel going out and seeing her beautiful bunnies white fur spattered in blood...and then to find out a dog had done this before AND THE OWNER WAS AWARE OF IT?!!!! Oh my lordy.....

I take being a bunny and dog owner very responsible and approach it the same way as mothering...there's rules and regulations but also lots of cuddles!!! You don't just fall into being a pet owner...sadly of course some people take breeds of any kind of animal without fully researching. Perhaps it was a status symbol or perhaps she lives in a dodgy area...who knows but what I do know is that this dog should not be in that home.
  • Hi Dutch I know you said Gomer was being harsh with the statements about the op's background, but look someone on another forum agrees:

A far cry from immigrant groups, who support each other and gladly extend their support networks to any local people who are interested in joining in. (For example, I benefited from excellent low-cost childcare provided by my local Indian community association when I lived in Reading.)

And you might like to reflect on the case of my grandparents: they arrived here as penniless refugees (jews fleeing Hitler) and contributed to our war effort by doing hard work on farms, and of course learned English from scratch. They went on to become teachers, and served for many years giving of their skills to their adopted country. They were also exceptionally good neighbours and supporters of their local community associations, partly out of the life-long gratitude that they felt for this country and its people saving their lives, and saving the world from Hitler.

I know several Ugandan Asians who came to this country fleeing Idid Amin, and in a similar fashion are excellent citizens and an asset to Britain.

Final thought: if there were no immigrants, who could the chavs (like you) look down upon?

If the world was as you saw it through your rose tinted glasses then of course everything would be great. Since you opted to take this debate beyond that by insulting me i will give you my two penneth.

Many immigrants do work - many do not. Draw your own conclusions from the fact over 11,000 prisoners are foreign nationals from a total 80,000 prison population.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/de...cs.immigration

Or the fact my local council spends £161m per year on community relations - a huge proportion of which is translation.
    http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/you-kmc/k...budget2008.pdf

Over the past decade Immigration is considered to be the biggest factor in community breakdowns as confirmed by the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereport...ins_commu.html

Also how many British born are out of work because the jobs are being taken by immigrants?

Now i am not racist in any way and i consider any person born in Britain to be British - I actively support skills based immigration.
To call me a chav - simply because my opinion differs to yours - and i assume anyone who shares my concerns (80% of the UK) shows you to be nothing more than an ill informed !!!!!! head with his/her head up their anal passage.

Not only is she irresponsible, but a racist 'chav' whatever one of those is:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

It seems she spends most of her time on the holiday boards, maybe this was while her dog was out on its own. I sincerely hope she keeps a better eye on her children than her dog whilst on holiday, otherwise we'll see another shocker in the Daily Mail....
    Save me from spending...

Look at the title of her post "Japanese Akita eats cats" !!!!!!!

Deliberately provocative, trying to make a joke of it:confused:

She is trying to make it sound like an unpleasant habit he has:mad:

Rather than her being a careless unfit owner, who has a large powerful dog she allows to roam:confused:

Going to K9 behaviourists is not always usefull. Dog's today magazine has a large article that many dog behaviouralists use putting the dog down as a first option rather then a last resort. hence never go for the 1st opinion.
I do agree this dog should be put up for re- home with either JAWT or ARW (Akita rescue and welfare), not put down. Weight restrictions on dogs just won't work. With all these kids beeing killed by mums and their bofriend, are we going to only allow Human breeding if you have passed several parenting classes??? We need people to start to understanding what dogs are and except that mistakes will be made, but to make the same mistake 3 times.... That is just ignorance.

That's exactly what she did say Mrs E at the end of her first post...asking how to help 'this increasingly popular habit'...like he had just taken up smoking!!!!

Whilst I don't want to get into (another!!) argument on these boards...lets just say I have noted Little Chicken's comments in her last post and I am perhaps getting a clearer idea of what kind of person and owner this is;)

I recently had a rabbit and a pet chicken killed by a ferret that had escaped from its run and I was heartbroken ,the rabbit really suffered and my husband had to kill her quickly to end her pain ,the rabbit was 8 years old and lived loose in the garden and had made her home underneath the summer house ,the difference being that the owner of the ferret has now done everything in her power to make sure the ferret is secure and that this cannot happen again ,she was also full of remorse and felt terrible about what had happened ,the ferret belonged to her young son and he was heartbroken about it .

If my dog somehow killed a Cat of course i'd pay all Vet bills the Owner of the Cat faced & it would NEVER be allowed to happen again. I'm just so shocked really it can even get out, surely you research breeds before deciding one (Hence me wanting a Cav lmao) & would know Akitas & Huskies etc need 6ft+ fencing?

Even if the dog loved everybody & everything, surely you wouldn't want it stolen or to be in a car accident etc etc or to get lost? I can't believe anyone'd have a dog escape, once maybe but not twice. Like someone else says has it escaped more than 3x?

Is the dog neutered? There must be a reason for it to keep trying to escape? I'd love to know how it got to 3x, once would be enough, MORE than enough for me i'd never get over it if mine killed another animal.
