"Where were you on the merit list and for what position and area? - looks bad news for us all - its a damn disgrace the amount of "our" money that the DWP have spent on thousands of worthless interviews:mad:"

Plus CRB checks at £26 each (probably double this for a Government department ?)
  • Jacki was the person from JCP

It is for Lancashire / Cumbria EO Grade

  • I think I'm in the same boat as a few people here. This is my 3rd time of going for an AO post with DWP.
    3rd time lucky! :)
Failed first time on tests as i was ill on the day.
Second i failed at the interview - didn't go in confidently.
3rd. Get the letter on 1st december, saying that I have been succesful, checks yadda yadda yadda.
Over a month later and nothing apart from my perfectly fine CRB check coming through post.
I haven't been told I'm on a wiating list or anything...
So i try to phone the number on the top of my letter. Nothing. over 20 times i've called and let ring for over 2 minutes at a time.
    Nothing.
So i google to see if anyone else has problems. And i read the last 3 pages of this.
I am out of work and i have been since the very start of the recession (the company i worked for went bust at the very start of the recession)
After the toughest year financially and mentally, i am overjoyed at getting the job.....
    Now this.
I feel like I'm being conned.....
I feel angry that i can't even get through. I don't want to e-mail just to get a textbook response. I want to talk to someone over the phone or face to face.
Is there anything i can do?
I need this job badly. Can't believe that I have to wait forever, possibly for nothing.
  • I wish I could offer some comfort Chris. I too got made redundant a year ago and havent worked since - i was earning good money too - my wife has gone full time but we only have her income - we have young kids etc etc - I tried hard was with about 20 job agencies ( is there a bigger waste of f time than them?) and nothing was doing ( i was an office manager and those positions seemed to have suffered most). I then 'got' this in October and actually got through to Newc and was told im 40 something on the merit list - refs have been done, criminal check and a few weeks ago i got the preferred location email( i ticked them all and numbered them in preference)

I havent heard anything since - other than what i posted previous about things being on hold till feb/mar( this unofficial from someone who works in personnel(not newcastle unfortunately).

    What do we do?

I have all but given up on it now and am having to look at trying other things - i thought the crb stuff and then when one of my referees contacted me and then finally the preference list email actually meant things were moving but it seems not

sorry i cant give anything positive...
  • So i try to phone the number on the top of my letter. Nothing. over 20 times i've called and let ring for over 2 minutes at a time.
    Nothing.

I had this problem for ages when I tried to get some sense out of somebody.
Just searched for a list of numbers for you off this thread so if you're not getting any look with the number on your letter, then you could try one of these:
    0191 216 6962
    0191 216 6985
    0191 216 6956
    0191 216 2488
    0191 216 6364
    0191 216 6775

Bit naughty really as I think each number deals with a different part of the country but what else can you do if you can't get in contact with anyone and they can probably transfer you to the right department.

Good luck, I'm in the same position, had my interview back in September and am still waiting to hear anything, have more or less given up now.
  • Chrisgolbez and Red Frankie, chin up peeps.. yes the process is kak I am afraid, and based on many folks questions on this and related threads, you will get a letter or email saying:

"DWP/JCP is in a recruting position in Dec, anyone not contacted by then regarding a start will be contacted in Jan 2010 to be updated"

    or some such variation.

Being desperate for work is not good, and it is unfortunate that the DWP process leaves folk thinking salvation is round the corner when it may be round 10 corners for some.. or perhaps not at all... On a recent interview I was first to arrive, then another chap showed up who was "surprised" I was there for an interview too.. I had to disillusion him about the process.. he took the "congratulations, you have passed the online assessment" email to heart, and presumed he would be one of 4 or 5 being interviewed rather than one of 80 interviewed that day, in a series of 12 interview days..

At the end of the day, the system is flawed, but if you are not in the process, it is one less job opportunity available to you, and frustrating as it is, it leads to job offers for a number of folk.. the only consolation is that even for current DWP staff the process is equally bad.
  • I wouldnt want to dampen anyones mood but theres been another freeze put on recruitment...for the forseeable future

DWP isn't the only government department - I'd suggest anyone waiting on a vacancy from jobcentre, goes to www.civilservice.gov.uk and uses the jobs part of the website to search for jobs. There are AO and EO vacancies frequently advertised.

I was one of the earlier posters who got through and I just hope it works out for those that are waiting. That website is a central hub of jobs right across the civil service and well worth frequently checking.

    Good luck
