If its the role I think it is then its interviewing customers who d onot have a national insurance number and require one (either to claim benefits or have a job), you have to check their paperwork to check eligibility and invesitgate documents such as passports to see if they are forged/fake/stolen, you'll mostly be dealing with people that are not native to this country. You'll then submit your findings to the supervisor who will help you make a decision on whether a NINO should be issued. I think it was really interesting as each case is individual and some of the stories (true or otherwise!) you'll hear will both amaze and sadden you.

I would liken it to the immigration officers you see on the airport programmes deciding whether to let someone into the country!

Well I am made up now then and really looking forward to starting after reading that. I was hoping that I would eventually get into the fraud side of the business so this could be the ideal starting point. :T

Perhaps, SammyJammy you coulc help me?

im currently a permenent AO within the DWP, I have only been ther a few months but within my area I have seen EO vacancies?

I would like to know if the department that currently work in, would they know I had applied to be the next level up and do they have a say in this if I was to pass the literacy testing.

Also I would like to know what would happen about having a day off to go to the testing if I did get through the initial shift?

Is there a set time you should be in your current role before moving on to the next role?

    Thank you.

What did you score for literacy? You may not have to sit it again if you scored 11 or higher. If lower you obviously will. No set amount of time you have to be in post before applying for promotion. You should inform your manager you intend to apply for a promotion, at least out of courtesy. They will give you time to go for interview/tests but don't rip the panties out of it, you're unlikely to need a day depending where it is.

    Hi Haypluz

Have you emailed or phoned anyone about this IRC ?

Hey! Yeah have called loads of times. I seem to have been 21 on the list forever! Is your IRC an EO role? It sounds great!
  • I was interviewed for the Administrative Officer post for the North East Essex Area on 6th March 2009, and was told in a letter dated the 29th March that I was placed on the waiting list for the position for 12 months. The criminal record check was received in May. I listed Colchester as my preferred place to work.

I had heard nothing from since then, however on the 3rd November I had a call from a member of the East of England recruitment team asking whether I am still available to work for them. I informed her that I was still available and was then told there would be a few posts coming up in the Essex area in the next few months. Is there any hope that I would be starting there soon? My previous job (a six month contract in a research job at a University) finished in July and I have been unemployed since then. I have found there is little about and getting a bit depressed about it. I noticed on my signing on day that I had to wait at least 40 minutes before seeing someone. Surely at this rate they need more staff?

You will need to be there a long time before you are likely to get in there - the jobs are good but very difficult to come by.

I have 14 years of fraud investigation experience and have already had a conversation with my bosses about the potential for moving into that area. They said they would endorse any application I made if I proved good enough at my job as my experience would be really useful. But, they added I shouldn't hold my breath as there is about as much chance of me being the next King.

I must admit that I never bothered with the phone but would send loads of emails to either recourcing in Newcastle or people in the Newport offices as that's where I thought I'd be posted. As it turns out I've been posted in Cardiff . Have you tried emailing too ?

It's an AO role and it does sound good doesn't it. Can't wait.

Appreciate and understand what your saying. It's just an area that appeals to me and is a goal to go for. I'm under no illusion though that it will happen......more what I would like to happen.
My Brother has worked for various depts within DWP for the last 15/20 years and is now working in ips as a FIO. He is doing degrees and attending loads of courses in his quest to better himself. But he is the first to say how hard it is to progress as the roles he wants are very few and far between with alot more people with either more experience or qualifications (or both) than him going for the same jobs. Doesn't stop him trying though ;-)

I totally agree!! What's life without a goal to aim for? The reason I want to start working for DWP is that it will get my foot in the door and so I can progress within the civil service. In a couple of years I want to go on the graduate scheme for HMRC if i'm lucky and become an internal investigator.

All I need to start towards this goal is for Jobcentre to phone and tell me i've got a job lol.

Sounds like your looking at vacancies advertised externally? If thats right of course you can apply, there is no time you need to be in post at any grade before you can apply for promotion. You do not need to tell them you are applying and they will not find out (unless they were involved in the recruitment), if I were you I wouldn't say anything until you get to interview stage and then just mention it (you are not obliged to tell them anything - its just courtesy).

Any Line Manager worth their salt will give you time off for the interview, its up to you if you ask for a whole day or a few hours after all it'll count as a day or hours off - your not asking for special favours here .

One thing I would say to all of you as Fixed Term Appt staff you can apply for Permanent vacancies that are advertised internally (if you meet requirements) and if you were successful you would be automatically made permanent.

    best of luck

    Sam

All posts are advertised, you've as much chance of getting a job in the fraud area as anyone else, its not a closed book! All interviews for FTA/permanent posts are on a competency/point basis - the best person will get the job wherever the currently work. Out of front facing roles fraud makes up about 3.5% of the jobs (most are at EO level) of the total so thats the thing that makes it tricky.

If you don't try you don't get.
