Does this indicate that I've been accepted ? or can they still refuse my application ?

what does the cover letter say? mine says "once we have received your signed application, we'll open your account and send you your new account details". The application form I have to sign came pre-filled with data I had entered online - is yours a blank form?

So what do you think I should do about this fagun? The letter def says its due to my credit score. I don't have any debts and never have. I have never had an unautherised OD or paid any bank charges. I didn't ask for a OD on this account anyway. On my credit file Barclays only did a "Indentification Verification" so it doesn't make sense. I doubt they knew I'm a MSEer though because I applied last weekend, before the email and the rush. How do I find out the really reason because phoning up didn't help?

I'm assuming, given what you've said above, that they don't have a legitimate reason to reject you (eg. no income coming in). I'd follow this through, because it might impact you later (some applications ask if you've been rejected in the past). I agree that they don't have to give you the details of the rating algorithm, but they should identify to you what factors have caused you to be rejected.

Who did you talk to? I'd ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, and ask them to explain why you've been rejected, given your details. You may have answered a question wrongly, in which case they should re-rate you with the correct information. Many banks are putting in automated systems, which can rate you wrongly. They should have an exception process to review your case manually if you've been clearly rated wrongly.

If you're not getting any answers by phone, write to/e-mail the CEO. Put COMPLAINT clearly in the heading. Outline details of your current financial situation (ie. never been in debt, have a regular income, etc). Use the words "Treating Customers Fairly" somewhere prominent in the text. Ask him to investigate.

    Good luck
  • Thanks for your advice fagan. And yes, I earn a decent wage so no problems there. I might send a email / letter later. This "easy" £100 is turning out not to be so easy.

The key word here is customer - as long as they haven't accepted you as a customer, it's somewhat odd to ask to be treated as one

It is absolutely ok to ask to be reconsidered (which I understood littlemissmoney had already done once) but if they say no they say no. Writing to a CEO when you actually all you want is £100 seems to be taking greed too far. And there are easier ways to make £100 quick! Just look at what's on offer through some of the cashback sites.

    Hi innovate,

I think the poster was referring to the reverse of the pre-completed form, where there are boxes to indicate other financial information such as 'Monthly Income/Monthly Expenditure'.

I was told (on the freephone helpline) that this additional information is not necessary for accounts opened online, and is simply the result of "old fashioned bank meets 21st century technology!" I was told to...

    1. Check the details are the same as you submitted online
    2. Add the 'years of birth' for any dependant children
    3. Tick the 'I want a bank account' box.
    4. Tick the 'I want a debit card' box (if you do)
    5. Sign and return the form and specimen signature card.

Incidentally, my letter, whilst similar to yours, was slightly different...

"Once we receive your signed application and any additional items requested, we'll open your account and send you your new account details".

They didn't ask me for any other items in the letter, so I'm assuming you omitted this detail from your post? Can you clarify?

No, my letter didn't talk about "any additional items requested"

I too noticed that the form looks a bit ancient, and I have a feeling they manually added my data with a typewriter. It also says you need to take the form into a branch, which clearly isn't the case, and I have more or less ignored the reverse of the form, just signed it, and it's already in the post.

Now that I look at the copy I took, I see there's the monthly income/expenditure section on the reverse of the form....I had overlooked this, and the form went back with prestine empty boxes! Ah well, if they want to know, they will no doubt get back to me. And should I then give them data different to what I put on the online application, and they change their mind and turn me down as a result of this, so be it! I'll let them keep their £100 then :D

I can see why you'd think that, but my form, although printed, had each and every piece of information 1cm to the left of where it should have been - meaning I had to be very careful I checked everything thoroughly!

    Hi all, quick query.

I applied for this account around 1 week a go ( guess - will have to check that)
and recieved a letter asking for me to take some ID to a branch.

Firstly, does this mean i have been accepted or not? and secondly do i still qualify for the £100 - it was diffinitely on the Barcleys website when i filled in the online application form.

Any help greatly appreciated and it could save me a worthless trip to Barcleys!

Why are you asking MSE? Ask Barclays (for free!) on 0500 007234
