Quite unusual this, and i dont want to make anyone jealous, especially if you havent received your bonus yet.

They have paid me the incentive twice !!

Cant believe it myself but i have definitely received 2 lots of £100.

Anyone know the laws on this i.e. if i transfer it out, and then close the account, can they do anything about it ?

I've also received two payments! Don't be surprised if they ask for it back... it isn't your money! I plan to spend the money - but will be fully prepared to repay it if it gets to that.

thanks for that. Got through to the customer complaints department and they are trying to tell me that I applied after the deadline. I applied for two accounts one after the other - online - I did mine first then my husbands. We both had an email to confirm being processed. Paid in £2000 across two months on the same day. He has had his (3 weeks ago) and I havent.

Luckily I have a letter dated 19th January asking me to take ID to a branch and as this was the cut off day, this surely is proof they had it before the 19th.

I got told exactly the same thing. Customer Services said they would have to log an enquiry with their on-line team and it could take up to 5 working days. Got a letter confirming my complaint had been logged and was under investigation then a couple of days later another letter apologising and informing me that the investigation was complete & the £100 would be credited to my account. The £100 was indeed credited & has now been transferred elsewhere :D

Tried to close the account via telephone banking service today & was informed that I need to do this at my local branch which I don't have (closest is ~40 miles) or alternatively, cut up all cards, cheque books, etc ensuring they cannot be re-assembled & post it to head office in Leicester - unbelievable!!

The process for closing an account is detailed on the Barclays website under "ask a question".

Asking "how do I close my account?" returns...

OH finally got paid. "Our records show that your account was not opened until February and therefore it was believed previously that your application was processed after the 19 January deadline. However, we have since been advised that there was a delay in some applications being processed ..."

It beggers belief that they can be so stupid.
  • Yay, mine came through today after complaining via e-mail, with a nice little message too:

12/05/2006 Credit £100.00 WITH OUR APOLOGIES RTB CUST REL
  • I got mine after waiting until the 28 days passed then calling their complaints line. I only had to call them twice to get some action. :p

If any of you are still waiting, I'd advise you to call 0845 609 0806. Their phone gets answered quickly enough but they tend to leave you on hold for a good few minutes. If they say they will call you back, make sure you get both their first and last name because when they don't call you and you phone again, apparently you need both names. They mentioned some kind of database problem...

Now to cancel the account. I'm not sure I'd got thru all this again for £100, it was quite a bother, especially when I had to trek 25 miles into a branch with ID.

    Stay safe.;)

Got mine yesterday. I used the 0800 number three times (open account, option 3) so it didnt cost me anything to phone. I got 'the spreadsheet isnt working' but then the girl said she was raising a formal complaint. I got a letter saying they were looking into it and it appeared in my account the same day.
I wonder how many people would have got their £100 if they hadn't chased it though.

I got mine after complaining (2 complaints in total - one on opening as well).

I am less inclined to get involved in this sort of thing in future because of the amount of hassle involved.
Probably would for £100, but for smaller sums I will consider my time because there usually seems to be a degree of hassle/work involved.
  • I rang Barclays on 26th April - exactly 28 days after my last deposit to be told that there was a 14 day extension as the offer had been so popular...

Still nothing today so I rang again, to be told that
    1. I opened the account after the offer had expired (I didn't)
    2. I didn't go into the branch as requested with my ID (I wasn't asked to)
    3. I wasn't eligible because I was a Barclays Business customer (This is completely untrue - I am an authorised signatory on a Barclays cheque account that is nothing to do with me)

After a bit of standing my ground I was told that my £100 would be credited in the next 48 hours.... they like you to beg don't they ?
  • Well I finally got Barclays to agree to pay me my £100.

Was it worth all the trouble? Probably not.

All my wife had to do was complete the online form and her account was set up.

Whereas I had to visit Barclays and refill the forms in by hand.

Being a First Direct customer, I had many 'issues' with Barclays' terrible telephone and online service.

When I phoned to ask where my money was, they told me that I had only made one payment of £1000 (a lie), and I could only check this with another department that closed at 8pm weekdays.

I'll be closing the account as soon as I can withdraw my free money.
