i tried that non flushing thing to save the planet and all i ended up doing was chucking loads of heavy duty cleaning products down the loo to clean the stains off the pan. i decided that was worse for the planet that me just flushing in the first place

Chances are that you've got some limescale buildup that simply appears clean after you've used the heavy duty cleaning products. Try using a very heavy duty limescale product on a dry loo pan (lift the flushing mechanism to dry the loo out first - patio cleaner stuff works well) which will clean it properly. You should then find you can easily flush only every second or third time (wet only - would never suggest this for anything solid!) without any staining - or with perhaps only a tiny amount of staining, after a few months, that is easily removed with a loo brush.

I heard that irony doesn't travel well on the internetweb - I haven't found this at all.
