HA does not class toilet not working as an emergency!

  • 99pence for a bucket at B&Q.

Not very much more for a whole new mechanism, depending on type. And fixable in about 10 minutes.

Then send the HA a bill for your time. :D

To be fair to N1, there's probably a water meter installed , but it's not an emergency.
Not really relevant though is it? She'll probably use less water flushing with tap water than she would using a full cistern of water.

It's no big deal. Just one of those things. Life's too short to worry about stuff like that - deal and get on with life. :)

At the risk of actually trying to solve the problem rather than trying to knock lumps off someone else, what sort of toilet is it? Is it a handle flush or a pushbutton?

If it's a pushbutton it's probably a badly seated or damaged valve. That sounds likely given the fact it was flushing continuously. This isn't that easy to fix, you often have to remove the cistern to replace the valve. If so, it would need a plumber if you're not confident to look yourself (and as it belongs to the HA it's actually not sensible to risk it, you could be liable if you broke it).

I wouldn't call this an emergency though. You can flush with a pan of water, and it'll probably use less water than the cistern would normally, so there's no issue of expense.

Maybe the lynch mob could call off their dogs now? It seems silly to get het up about someone asking this, seems sensible enough to me.

Actually, short of taking heed of the suggestions that HAVE been made, it's difficult to see exactly what other advice the OP is trying to get?

Unless it's for someone to say, "Sure, go ahead and sue your HA."

Pardon my ignorance but wouldn't water for the toilet cistern also be metered through this? What difference does it make?

Others may not see this an an emergency - OK thats your opinion but it seems when searching on the net that you can get from your local council a leaflet produced by the Department of Environment called a 'Right to Repair' - no flusing toilet when there is not another one working in the house should be carried out within a set time laid down by law. So if they are not following government guidelines then the perhaps OP should be rather annoyed.

Hopefully this wll point you in the a similar direction to the quoted poster above: http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/housing/betterdeal2 - link on page to leaflet - appears to apply to all of England - assuming thats where you are.

Perhaps even contacting her local councillor might get some action - it's what they are there to help with at times.

she's come for help and advice not to be shot down in flames. She has a right just like anyone else and should expect a decent service from her HA at all times. OK yes she might be able to make do in the meantime but why should she if they are required to fix it be in the above leaflet or her tenancy agreement.

Now come on no more fighting - we wanna help! Pleaseeee :)

saver_sam, I think if people didn't join a forum and then start shouting the odds they'd probably get a better reception. Yes, sometimes people are in a difficult situation but writing insults about all and sundry just annoys the regulars. And it's the regulars who are the ones who can provide help and advice. If she doesn't think that then she would have gone to a plumbing forum! ;)

Time to take a chill pill methinks.
  • yes well we have given help and advice as to what to do until the HA come to fix it but apparently that's not good enough, she wants them here today! I'd like my oven here today but it aint gonna happen, maybe I should sue my solicitor for allowing me to buy a house with a duff oven eh?

#12 could not agree more with your comments. I have found this a lot on these forums (ebay included). You put a genuine question or concern and you get a lot of saddoes with nothing better to do than slag you off.

These people ought to go out and get a life.
I also think that toilet not working is an emergency as its classed under health and hygiene....

Could you explain what you think the risk to health/hygiene is?

The OP has clearly stated that it's just not flushing of it's own accord but that it can be flushed by pouring water in the cistern. So no faecal waste is being stored on the premises, there is no burst to sewerage pipes. There's inconvenience certainly but I'm not clear where you see the risk to health/hygiene - can you explain exactly what you mean by that? Thanks. :)
