I have always had a war store with a few days food, generator,$1000 and a HF radio

What kind of war are you expecting?

A nuclear exchange would see you locked up underground for at least a month - providing that you're at least 100 miles away from the many ground zeros, also the weather would need to be on your side too.

Your $1000 would be worth nothing as soon as the attack warning sirens start.

If underground, the fumes of your generator would end up killing you and if above ground then the radiation would kill you in days.

Your radio would most likely be fried by the EMP caused by high altitude airbursts. Even if your radio survived you would be listening to static as every govt installation would have been multi-nuked.

A war in the developed world will be Nuclear - ditch the war store, spend the $1000 and when the bomb does drop just hope your in range to be vapourized.

Harsh I know but, unless you're a cockcroach, I'd forget about the war store.

    ;)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Dopester is quite safe with me as I am a veggie :D

(If I were Dopester I would stear clear of Elisebutt, though....between you and me I think she was a bit quick to suggest Dopester casserole!)

Well I did find this blog - so there are plenty of alternatives to casserole. There's always an alternative food source for the truly hungry:rotfl::rotfl:

  • Here's a mad idea. Rather than spending money now on food to stockpile in case of redundancy, why not stockpile the money instead, and then if made redundant spend that on food that's fresh rather than spent months going mouldy in cupboards?

Another family discussion over Christmas chez NDG. Can or should you eat bacon which is 2 weeks out of date? Pasta which is 8 months out of date? My mother reckoned "yes" to both, but was out-voted.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Bacon in a piece perhaps. Sliced or diced bacon no.

Fresh pasta no. Dried pasta perhaps.

  • Yes, I always make sure I've got a 'tray' of essentials from lidls - a tray being 16 or so tins at a time still in the packaging. - Kidney beans, soups, salad beans, rice pudding, soya milk. Whenever they have got a half price sale on an item I get even more - dishwasher tablets, razor blades etc.
What is it they say - we are 5 days from armagedon in the event of a financial meltdown - if the banks fail or the petrol goes dry and stops deliveries. Im ok for 16 days!!!

Brilliant !! So you will be able to suffer 11 days longer than the rest of us :D .
Seriously though, those wind-up lights look a good idea. I may start using them for my entire lighting needs anyway (live on my own so no-one to moan at me about it) . Might be useful to carry one in my vehicle in case of emergency. Having a ciggy lighter powered light isn't much good if the vehicle suffersd an electrical problem.
  • I`ve got a very good os store, including means of cooking, lighting, alternative radio plus meds, food, water carriers and water filtration/purifier.

yes ok, I went over the top but everything is tucked away out of sight and not in the way, so to heck with it. We could survive here for months

Just think about it: the stores are trying to scrape back what they paid out for their goods so will they bother with deep stocks in the future? I think not. It will only take one event/disaster of some sort and the shelves will be cleared by the strong-armed.

Errr....because benefit claimants are only allowed to have a maximum of £6,000 capital (note the word "capital" is used - not the word "savings" = that means they even take into account money set aside for holidays and even money set aside for bills). Hence if you have £7,000 going spare for instance - wouldnt you rather have spent £1,000 of that on stocking up with food and have £6,000 as money - rather than have the whole £7,000 as money?

Buy some water purifying tablets and drink your own pee and catch rainwater. Lots of rainwater in the UK.

That IS what one would have to do.

.....just off to contemplate putting barbed wire round my waterbutt.....;)
