Noooooo ... surely the use by date means you've got to cook it by the 26th, then once it's cooked you've got another day or two left for leftovers, sarnies etc ?

Jeesh. I sure hope that's what it means. Otherwise we've been doing it wrong year after year.

Absolutely - cook it by 26th is the meaning here- They have no suggestions over what period you use it over it once its cooked. No Turkey would survive past boxing day in my household anyway.
  • My God, my turkey has a use by date by 26th December. I will have to waste so much food.
  • I will review the recipe in a more level mind later today.

I learnt this happened two years back to a friend. He got Turkey refunded and all things he was not able to use, plus £50 in vouchers 10 for each person effected. I think when a meal like that is spoilt that is not enough. I was both upset and angry. After all, it was not like I coudl dash back down on the day (understandably) and make it all good by getting another turkey.

First time i had family to me. Lucky i did have other stuff to cook.

Use by is first cook as far as i am concerned. Cold cuts last a lot longer than two days and if you do a pie, then again you can make is stretch for al ittle longer.

Best of course is soups, and freeze portions. Reduced Turkey overkill then as you can spread the intake.

I have packed up all the bits i cannot use, this is some veg, the pastry and of course the turkey.

Will report back on what happens as the store is not open again until tomorrow 09:00 am.

    Cheers.......Q

I would have been furious if I'd had a "fresh" turkey delivered with such a short use-by date.

The complainer said they picked it themselves.
  • Yes, it was picked by me, i noted the date and looked at them all to see all turkeys, ducks and geese where use by 26th.

As the shop is shut on 25 & 26.

It just looked like I have been unlucky. A rather horrible lesson learnt for next year. But remember i will.

You will be making a complaint though I hope - Putrid Turkeys are bad for everyone. And perhaps a reasoned letter to a director of the supermarket explaining how it ruined your Christmas would not go amis. You deserve more compensation than the cost price of the bird. You could also speak to trading standards at your local council in case the supplier has been scammed by having unfit birds smuggled back into the human food chain as happened with chicken a year or two ago.

OP don't blow the situation out of all proportion.

If you go in there screaming for compensation or making wil accusations about unfit meat and trading standards etc, then you're unlikely to get even a refund.
    "Love you Dave Brooker! x"

"i sent a letter headded sales of god act 1979"

Why does everyone think that they have to get CEO's MD's etc involved - if a manager can't deal with the complaint then they're not fulfilling part of their job. A director isn't even going to look at a letter/email from a customer let alone reply to it.
