Turkey horribly off - advice for takign back please

Oh dear! Well such is life but as you can appreciate i am very annoyed.

When i go back to the store when it re opens, i will not loose my temper but if there are any advice and tips on how to deal with this situation i will be very grateful.

I have already gone to the shops web site and sent an e-mail to cust serv just to in this first instance have recorded my problem on the day of discovery.

So bought Turkey on 21.12.08 had delivered on Mon 22.12.08 (along with all other shopping) I went in and drove the trolley and chose my items, at the checkout they then pack it and store it (different bags, fridge, store etc Turkey did go and arrive in bag marked fridge)

I immediately put all fridge items in fridge.

Perhaps it shoudl be noted, all other fridge items are ok and so far remain ok, the bacon (use by today) is fine. Turkey noted to be used by tomorrow 26.12.08

This morning, i get the turkey out to see the skin more yellow than i thought it normal, i make a small cut in the bag to be thrown by a BAD smell, not a slightly bad VERY, i touched the skin to have the yellow developing gunge slip off, basically, rancid and rotting!

So no turkey, i also bought other things to use for the turkey leftovers (was going to do Jamie Oliver's Chicken and leak pie)

Store reopens on 27.12.08 @ 09:00
How should i approach the store?
Can i also take back all other ingredients (pie) as i cannot use them?
I want and expect a lot more than just my money back, should i expect this?

Thanks for any adivce - if anyone is on this as i am?

Cheers,,,,,,Q

PS have got meal, doing homemade meat balls instead.

  • Heavens, that's terrible news. How awful to wake up to that, it really makes you wonder quite what is being served up to some folks this afternoon.

I think your expectations are perfectly reasonable in the circumstances. I hope you get your money back for the turkey and all the ingredients plus something over & above for the inconvenience. Way over and above if you've got a full house expecting a turkey ...

I'm unsure what you should do with the evidence ... you can't keep the bird in the fridge or the freezer because it's off ... and even keeping it out the back or in the shed or w/e is maybe not an option either ... the weather's fairly mild & it'll be absolutely rank by Saturday.

Poor you *hugs* ... hope the meatballs turn out alright (they sound lovely anyway). I know the shops are all closed but you could ring round local hotels/restauraunts to see if anyone has a turkey going spare ? Or maybe see if anyone can take a (rather) late booking for this afternoon ?

You miserable old scroat. Just because you are all alone and miserable, you think it's fun to troll on MSE and look to make sarcastic comments when the OP is genuinely upset. Don't knock other people and their problems until you've sorted your own out.

    Qfanatiq,

A couple of years back we decided to try goose. Some family members hadn't had it for Christmas since they were kids and we all fancied a change. It came from M&S ready packaged in a tray ready to cook, stufffed etc. We followed all of the cooking instructions but it didn't turn out right. Some friends also bought the same one from the same store and they had exactly the same experience.

When we went back to the store after Christmas we got a full refund. I think it cost £50.00. We didn't need to take the goose back to prove there had been a problem.

I'm sorry you had a problem with your Christmas lunch. Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

It is perfectly possible and reasonable to use left over turkey in a chicken recipe. I often use turkey in place of chicken when making a curry as turkey is cheaper.
  • Keep your receipts and the label off the turkey packaging.
Make a point that since turkey is usually cooked on 25th Dec why did THEY send you one with a use-by date of 26th Dec. Make sure you put them on the back foot, without being loud - it doesn't help  .

    What a terrible let down.

This happened to my Mum many years ago when I was small. I went into the kitchen and asked what the terrible smell was. Having no sense of smell she hadn't realised and was about to stuff the bird  (I know, I know! but that was how it was done in those days!!). Anyway on turning the bird on it's chest it was discovered to be pale green _pale_ .

Not sure how she missed that as it will have been washed to within an inch of its "life" (something else we're advised not to do nowadays - though I never suffered food poisoning till after I left home).

Hope you managed to find an alternative.

    How Rude!!! ;)
  • Thanks guys, no one seemed patronising and i enjoyed reading all responses.

I am keeping the said (old bird) to take back in its full glory as even one day after its use by day (kept in fridge) it should NOT be like it will be!

I have learnt, i should get more than just my money back. But lets be honest, i woudl have rathered a full crimbo meal over this! Such is life.

Recipts have been kept, originally as i was gettgin stuff delivered. Checked Turkey was same price as bought (in case) they were all indivually priced.

SO yes, taking back Turkey and pie ingredients and some veg i was not abel to use today and not able to program into my forth coming meals (as i would have liked as i am not keen on waste).

As for the Q above RE Jamies and Turkey, go to good old google and type in Jamie Oliver sweet leek and turkey pie, mmmmmmmmm!!!!

The meat balls were awesome. I do a passata sauce with very finly chopped mushrooms and one read onion (very fine!!!), plus a glass of red wine and about two (yes two ) glasses of olive oil (vrgin), in the meat balls it is 500g lean mince beef and 250g lamb, seaoned with pepper, salt, thyme and rosemary (as you liek to taste) and one glove (or more if you like) of garlic with an egg to bind.

This makes about 12 evenly sized meatballs. I use a sqaure dish about 30x30cm

In oven on low (140) for an hour i then wack it up to 180 after i have done my three cheese mash (and chuck that in the oven) for the final bit (mash starts to brown). It will be almost blackened on top, but this on the matballs fat making it CRUNCH on top and soft from there below in the sauce.

    Enjoy.

    Cheers......Q
