Hi Micron,
It is strange that we are reading the same book. I have finished it now, and it is actually the second time that I have read it. It struck a cord with me.
I am re-visiting a lot of the books that I read in my late teens. I was a real dreamer then, an adventurer who believed anything was possible, with the right attititude. I then had a few major setbacks and became quite cyncial. Strangely, I have come full circle.
Anyway, my latest book Sophies World, by Jostein Gaarder is another one I read years ago. It compares the universe to a big white rabbit that has been pulled out of a hat by a master magician and humans to microscopic insects existing deep down in the rabbit's fur. Most humans don't give much thought to why they are there and after the wonder of childhood, burry themselves ever deeper into the rabbits fur, for comfort.
Philosophers, try and climb up the fine hairs of the fur in order to stare into the magician's eyes.
It is a brilliant book, that is a really excellent narrative of the history of philosophy, told as a detective story.
P.S - DH says I'm going through a classic mid-life crisis, suddenly aware of my own mortality, and determined to achieve what I originally set out to, before it is too late.
He could well be right, but at least he is being very supportive. He sent me a barbie doll with pink sunglasses, hotpants and a seventies, flowery halterneck top as a present for completing the 30 day Shred :rotfl:. She is my new mascot!!I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -
A lovely, lazy (except for The Shred) non schedule day today.
DH is doing a bab-b-que soon, so i'm going to sit out the back reading my book, while he finishes the garden and cooks.
Back to business tomorrow.I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -
Not back to business today,
DH got a call from a friend of a friend. A young lad who's touring Scotland and wants to spend the day with us.
So we'll have a holiday day today with our Portuguese visitor.

Morning,
Hope everyone is well.
I am going to make a few changes to my exercise and weight loss regime, this week, to try and shake things up again.
I am going to do 'The Shred' every second day and one hour of some form of exercise (swimming, cycling, walking, badminton) on the alternate days. I have more time now that DS is off school, and I can do these things with him.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week I am going to do a detox regime based around grapefruits, to try and shed a further 3 lb's, then it's back to the sensible, healthy eating.

Hi,
scrooge glad to see that you had a rather chilled out weekend. You sure do deserve it considering how much you get done during the week. I'm sure your visitor on Sunday had a brilliant time.
You seem to have your exercise regmine sorted out. I'm sure you will get even more benefits by alternativing The Shred with other forms of exercise and it includes your DS so even better.
I did The Shred this morning and have just got back from a game of squash. Was thinking of doing Jillian's yoga DVD today but I'll leave that for tomorrow now. I had a really bad eating weekend and I'm sure I am much heavier now than I was a month a go. Scared to step on the scales but will build up some courage some time this week to see what damage I have done. I have had a quick look at the weightloss thread and it sure is motivating. I'll be looking to join that thread once I can summon up the courage to weigh myself. Do you mind me asking you what the grapefruit detox involves?
wilf sounds like you have got a lot going on this week but I'm sure you will get through it now you have listed what needs to be done. Good luck.
Ciao for now.

Hi Micron,
What an active day you've had. I've never played squash, but i've watched it and it looks incredibly physical. Keep this up and you'll be a lean, machine in no time.
The grapefruit diet is pinched out of this week's Woman's Own, and i'm in the mood for something different so I will give it a go. Grapefruit is supposed to have great fat busting enzymes and to lower cholesterol.
It is as follows:-
FOR THREE DAYS
BREAKFAST
- 1 egg yolk and 3 whites made into an omelette
or 2 eggs, any style.
and
- 1 glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice or dish of grapefruit and orange segments
With tea or coffee, black or with skimmed milk, no sugar (but you may use artificial sweetener)
MID MORNING
- 1 fresh grapefruit or 1 glass fresh grapefruit juice
LUNCH
- 1 glass of grapefruit juice
- Mixed colourful salad including, peppers, carrots, spinach watercress and sweetcorn with dressing made from 1 dsp yoghurt and 1tsp lemon juice. Add the segments of one pink grapefruit and a sprinkling of toasted almonds.
AFTERNOON SNACK
- One hard-boiled egg
DINNER
Half an hour before the meal have 1/2 ruby grapefruit
Steamed or poached cod fillet, steamed spinach and carrots.
Or 30g portion of soft cheese such as Brie or Camembert, served with crudites (carrot, celery, courgettes) and 1 dsp of unsalted nuts.
DESERT
Grapefruit jelly (made with tin of grapefruit sections in natural juice and gelatin)
TO DRINK
Plenty of water, one glass of champagne, dry white wine, coffee or tea with skimmed milk and no sugar.
I'm cutting out the champagne and dry white wine.
Hi Wilf, I hope your day is going to plan.
Bye for now.I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -
Scrooge just read your post, what a lovely thing for your DH to send you a sexy looking Barbie. That's a fantastic mascot. I'm sure it will motivate you on even more.
Many thanks for the Grapefruit diet. It sounds more than doable to me. I may give it a go. If not this week then definitely next week. Please do let me know how you get on.
I'm off to munch on some cherries now.Save £12k in 2017 #14

Thanks micron,
It was really sweet of him, he has been very complimentary.
He has joined me on the fitness regime and has lost a stone in weight in the last month, so I think it's about time I bought him a Ken doll. They can stand side by side on the dressing table :rotfl:. I will keep you posted on the grapefruit diet, if you're up for it, it starts 6.30 am on Wednesday. I'll post the shopping list later ............

Wow scrooge, your DH has done brilliantly to lose that much. Yes he definitely deserves a "Ken" doll!
I may just join you on the grapefruit diet if I can get to the supermarket before Wednesday. I have already got the grapefruits, eggs and salad stuff but would need to get some spinach. Thanks for keeping me on top of my fitness/health regime, I really do appreciate it.Save £12k in 2017 #14
