What are people's thoughts on Dubai?

Dubai is OK if the package is OK, otherwise it's a damn expensive concrete jungle. Dubai is a good enough place for single males on a good salary and a sizeable expenses budget, but beyond that, you'd need to get specific before I'd be willing to venture a response. :)

You need to be careful not to get groping on the beach, prosecuted, jailed, and deported, though!

South of France for me. Fantastic climate lots to do and see andjust over an hour from the UK. Just a totally beutiful place.

We bought an apartment last year an the plan is to downsize in the UK and split our time between the two. A few years away unfortunately!

Will probably move to Northern California at some point in the near(ish) future as my missus would like to be closer to her family. Can't complain, there are worse places, though I dread the prospect of only getting 15 days holiday a year. And I'll miss the cricket.

If it weren't for family ties, Oz or NZ would do it for me, or Canada (but the missus hates the cold). Would love to spend some time living in SE Asia as well, but not permanently. Edit: I should add that I'm actually quite happy here in the UK - it's only here that I really get the feeling of belonging.

I second the comments upthread about Dubai, where I lived for a year. Awful, dismal, expensive place - not worth it unless you're on a really good package including paid accommodation. Or you really, really like shopping malls.

As it happens, I'm on a business trip to Dubai right now. It's the only city I've ever lived where I've felt no nostalgia pangs whatsoever on a return visit.

If I were groped on the beach I'd not complain. In fact, rather than prosecute them I'd probably go back to the same spot the next day in the hope it might happen again.

OMG what is it like???...I think I have turned into the bloke in the movie ''3 and Out''....I sit and stare at pics of the beach and an overpriced wooden hut (just reduced to £450k) when I feel a bit stressed.

But I have a sneaky feeling I have an image of life there that may not turn out to be how I imagine it to be. I am a bit of a London girl too.

Other snag is OH doesn't want to live there, or look after sheep, or grow turnips ....

I lived on Portland as a Navy brat - but my mum hated it so much that we only stayed for 6 months (even though my dad was on a two year posting!) and fled back to Cornwall. The estate we lived on is a funny ol' desolate place now, like a ghost town (I go there to climb these days). I can't imagine that's the part you have in mind though ;)
