So sell me Dubai..... What did you like about the place? :)

I think the figures are something like 80% of the population are expats and 95% of the workforce are expats. :)

To be honest, the mix of ex-pats was one of the things! Normally if I travel abroad I'd steer well clear of the ex-pat scene but Dubai's a real melting pot and I met lots of interesting people when I was over there for work. (I've also been for a holiday). Admittedly, there seems to be a large (and growing?) rich/poor divide, which was one of the things I didn't like. But the place has a young, "can-do" attitude which is refreshing. Quite a buzz there. And if you look beyond the ostentatious, the desert is actually quite beautiful and the people friendly. I'd expected, as a woman, to find the place oppressive - muslim country and all that (and childhood memories from other Middle East countries of not being able to leave the base) - but actually, I found the people very warm and respectful and felt very safe. (And, for a holiday, the service is second to none). I'll be the first to admit though, that it might be a "class" thing and maybe if you're an immigrant construction worker you might see things a bit differently.

  • Italy would be a fabulous place to live. The food is exquisite and the table wine is out of this world!
  • As the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, usually because its growing on a big pile of sh*t...

That said, my ideal move would be to somewhere like Mallorca; EU so no residency limitations, nice weather all year, I can speak the language just about, easy links to the UK, lots of casual work, often with English speakers, beautiful scenery, etc.

  • Here's a thought. Whenever I think of moving abroad, I always associate it with warm countries, doing nothing other than pottering around, being self-sufficient and watching the sunset while drinking home made wine.

I never think about living in a cold climate, or doing any kind of real work, and especially not commuting or sitting in traffic jams or on trains, buses etc.

So I wonder if it's because I just associate 'abroad' with holidays, and if I actually worked abroad, I'd be no more happy than I am now? I really can't see the point of moving to somewhere like, for example, Hong Kong, where I would be in an airconditioned office just like London, crammed on a tube train just like London, and living in a small flat, just like London...

Lots of ex-pats are a thoroughly miserable bunch, hating where they came from and where they've moved to.

They don't address the fundamental stuff they hated that drove them to move in the first place IME.

38C and not a cloud in the sky here for the last couple of days. Starting to get a bit oppressive. Thankfully it's started raining.

It is a little known fact that the greatest rock band in the world, The Who, tried to record their live album at Hull University in 1970, but on the night some of the equipment failed. In consequence, they recorded their next uni gig, which was at Leeds.

It was just as well things turned out that way.'The Who, Live At Hull' doesn't quite have the right ring for one of the best live sets ever recorded!*

*Yes, of course it's an opinion, and I'm biased!
