PS Interesting to hear people's opinions on Dubai, especially the ones who've never been there! I have to admit, I never really fancied it until I ended up visiting and it wasn't at all like I expected. I quite liked the place - although I can see that to live there, rather than just visit, you'd need a really good salary. (And no, I don't like shopping. NOT a typical female in that respect). Something like half the population there are foreigners anyway.

    Who are "us", NDG?

ETA: I think you're probably refering to your family in Israel. If you're a British passport holder though, you can visit Dubai (even with Israeli stamps in passport).

It has to be Australia for me, I'm off their this weekend for 3 weeks :), to see my daughter and scout out the area, I'm off their for certain in just under 4 years, however if my job goes here, I'm cashing in my investments and getting on a plane.

I'm not sure that's right - their website says:

Please note that Israelis and travelers whose Passports bear Israeli stamps will be denied a visa.

And OH was born in Israel, which is a bit of a give-away.

    Another website says:

Israeli citizens are prohibited from travelling to the UAE however, and entry might be denied to Israelis travelling on another passport, or other nationals who were born in Israel - check with the UAE immigration department or your nearest UAE embassy in that case.

I know Israeli passport holders can't enter (as UAE doesn't recognise Israel) but I can confirm from personal experience that an Israeli stamp is not a problem. I think it was in the past. I agree that your OH would be wise to take advice although if he has a British passport and is a British citizen then I'd be pretty certain that he wouldn't be denied.

  • He's an Israeli citizen as well, though. And he and Isaac speak Hebrew together, which is a bit of a give-away.

I think the figures are something like 80% of the population are expats and 95% of the workforce are expats. :)

We could go back to New Zealand if we wanted - we all have NZ as well as UK citizenship. I am making sure I keep myself employable in the NZ academic market (publish there at least once every couple of years). Maybe we'll go back for retirement, housing is cheaper, not sure whether we'd get UK or NZ pension, but we'd get one of them. But ... there are advantages to being here, such as my son getting full-time assistance at school AND support in after-school and holiday care. In NZ, we'd be lucky if he had 15 hours a week and definitely no out of school care - so you have to pay nanny rates. There isn't anywhere else we could go, families with disabled children can't get in. If I had a real choice (or had had one 2-3 years ago when I was job hunting) we'd have gone to Canada.
