Count yourselves lucky that you have those spaces available, In Holland, there are no such things as special parking spaces for mother and children and very few disabled spaces at supermarkets. My sister can't believe it when she comes over here and sees all these "special" parking spaces.0

There is NO need for P&C spaces to be near the doors of whatever the facility is, but I do see how the extra space at the side is useful to get the car seat out.
The SIMPLE solution is to put lots of these P&C spaces at the back of the car park, BINGO No one else will try & park there & the parent will still have the extra door space.

I'm off WALKING to the PUB for a pint and no doubt listen to some other sad baskets moaning good or what. It's boxing day for gods sake. :beer:Be good to the young on their way up you might need them on your way down.0 -
I never had a problem getting baby and seat out in a normal parking space. Yes, P&B bays make it easier but they are not essential.
I'd like to bet that very few P&B bays would be used if they placed them at the far end of the car park, as it is as much about laziness as anything. Of course, parents will now say their children risk being run over, or getting wet if they have to cross a busy car park...
I see no reason whatsoever for mum-to-be bays. I've never seen them and it seems utter nonsense to me. Pregnancy is not a disability for goodness sake!
But I agree it is about attracting the people who spend the most instore. They will pander to pathetic parents and their offspring so long as they can take their money.
And as for people who say they may need to dent a car door if they are forced to use a normal space... I'm speechless!!! Just what is wrong with people??? :mad:0 -
To be fair, I drive a 4x4 & they are a tad wider than a car.
Now I don't have a problem as its just usually me, if DD is with me & space is narrow she jumps out before I park.
But I could see a difficulty with wide cars (as cars seem to be getting bigger all the time) & narrow spaces & getting baby seats out.0 -
I have a 2 year old, am nearly 8 months pregnant & drive a Picasso - it's not a small car, so I prefer the parent & child space as it makes it easier for me to get him & me out. However, I don't think they NEED to be at the front of the store - I'd be quite happy for them to be at the side, with a covered or railed walkway to the trollies & entrance, to keep our son out of harms way in the car park.
I would NEVER choose to take a disabled spot if there was no P&C space available, I'd just park further out & get a trolley for the boy before walking in. We CHOOSE to have a baby, they don't choose to have a disability, it's put upon them - it would be majorly selfish to take their spot.
The P&C spaces are a nice luxury, but people take things too far when they demand one and berate disabled people for taking them if their spaces are full - I do agree with a previous poster, if the spaces were further out, less people would be fighting over them . . .

I love being quoted completely out of context. What I said was that IF I was to have to park next to you and need more space, you would be the first to complain if I damaged your car. I didn't say I would deliberately damage someone elses car, just that people soon change their tune when it goes against them. I went into parenthood with my eyes wide open and i'm not suggesting anyone without children should take second place, if you had not decided to read into my comments a meaning that isn't there, you would realise that. For the record I didn't say i would berate a disabled person for using a P&C space, apologies if I gave that impression. I only ever ask politely people who don't have a child with them and don't appear to be displaying a blue vbadge, or people with children who are not in a child seat and don't appear to be disabled. I NEVER berate people but of course it has been assumed that anyone who would ask someone to vacate a space would do so aggressively!
I don't expect anything, I work hard for everything I have and if someone wants to make my life easier that doesn't make me a pathetic parent, just one who won't look a gift horse in the mouth. Yes I CAN cope in a normal space without damaging anyones car  but if I can find a bigger space so I can transfer my sleeping baby into his pram quickly without leaving the pram at the back of my car (where it really is quite vulnerable from other drivers) then I will. I repeat, I wish the spaces were further away so people who don't need the extra space can park closer to the store can! The spaces are not essential, I never said they were. They just make things easier.
I excercise a great amount of care in everything I do and It's not about getting my own way or making veiled threats (?!) but I know I am never going to change peoples' minds about that. Lets agree to differ.
I'm not staying to argue, i'll leave you to clique happilly together, enjoy.Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

You could just try holding his hand, its what I did when DD was small.
Worked fine in car parks.0 -
I don't think you were quoted out of context. You brought up the issue of denting cars.....if you do as you say now and exercise care it is not going to happen.
I dont think that people who have supported not having the spaces would change their tune if you did dent their cars,it would be due to your inability to excercise that care, and not due to the lack of relevant spaces.
Whether you berate them or not,you actually have no right to ask anyone to vacate a P&C space as they are not breaking any law or enforcable guideline.
You addressed some of your remarks to the childless, now when those of us who are not childless but still disagree with you comment, we are a clique.
No,we just disagree with you.0 -
One of the other problems nowadays is that cars in general are getting bigger and wider and the older car parks are not designed with this in mind. There are some car parks that I can see a car not much bigger than mine (a Ford Fusion- hardly massive) would be a struggle to fit in a space- if you were heavily pregnant you wouldn't be able to fit between vehicles to get in or out so it IS an issue!
