Fitorbust - I've signed up for a 10k too so perhaps we can motivate each other. When is yours?
Right after merely thinking about moving that distance I'm going for a lie down with magazine!
  • I have hours of HHSS lined up, I'll be watching Biggest Loser and Anne Diamond's War on Fat on +1 (channel 244), 'cos we're watching CSI at the moment whilst taping Extreme Slimmers.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their advice tonight. After feeling very sorry for myself earlier I 've just finished 40 mins of Ministry of Sound workout dvd. I may be sweaty but at least I am no longer wallowing in self pity! I'm going to dig my kids skipping rope out and have a go at that tomorrow AND try and regig the finances to see if I can justify the gym expense!

Thanks again to everyone, I really do appreciate your help x

  • Hi sorry to but in, but I just wanted to share my own experience and point out that it's really worth going to a specialist running shop where they can check your feet and find out what shoes are right for you. Not everyone's feet are the same - I never knew this until two months into my jogging wondering why I had sore shins, ankles and arches. Went to a running shop - NOT a normal sports shop - and they checked my feet by doing a gait analysis. Apparently I "overpronate" (feet roll inwards) and have slightly dropped arches. Being recommeded a certain shoe by someone who gushes "it's the most fantastic shoe ever" is irrelevant unless they have the same type of foot as you. It happened to me - my neighbour has super high arches and she was gushing about her super comfy shoes and even got me to try them on. I am SO GLAD I didn't listen to her and went to the running shop instead where they know their stuff because if their feet roll in and yours roll out, (or their arches are high and yours are low) their shoe may actually do you more HARM because each shoe is designed to correct a specific type of problem. Find out what type of foot you have: neutral, overpronated, or supinated (it was all gobbledegook to me at first, but it makes so much sense now) and then find a shoe designed for that category. Otherwise, you could seriously injure yourself and be laid off for months (say you have feet that roll out, and are unwittingly running in a shoe that is forcing them even more outwards, instead of coaxing them in to correct the problem. That could cause you some serious injury).

Once you know what shoes you need you can buy them for about £40 on Amazon or ebay. I paid £80 for my first pair in the shop, but now I know the ones I need I got my last pair for £11.99 on ebay auction.

Thanks for the advice but I am actually a Podiatrist and have a specialist knowledge of sports biomechanics - just didn't want to preach about footwear when I am not at work. I had been researching running shoes for a while and in a nutshell was impressed that the staff in the shop were pointing me at a shoe that I actually thought was suitable for me. Maybe I should have gone into more detail - sorry.
Incidentally the majority of people over pronate slightly, most average shoes allow for this, but if you have problems getting shoes to fit it is best to get a neutral pair and consult someone who is qualified in this area to get some orthotics made specifically for you.
I would also be careful of ebay and trainers as a lot come from china (I know most are made there lol), but there are a lot of fakes out there.
NO EXCUSES - THIS YEAR IT'S PERSONAL..........

Well i've gone from being a couch potato to exercising everyday for at least 30 mins, i only started on the 2/1/09 but i'm still managing thanks to the support of people on here, especially FFM. The amount of exercise done in the last 11 days is more than all of last year put together. Well done simbalou on doing 40 mins of the DVD, maybe alternate between that and wii fit so things don't get repetitive.

Oh no, I feel so stupid now! There was me blabbing away telling you all about overpronation and trying to keep it simple, and all the time you were a podiatrist! LOL. Feel like a toddler explaining something to a scientist. I'm really sorry, I was only trying to help (crawls back into hole in ground blushing).

I was caught out in the beginning phase of my jogging in buying some "genuine" Reebock trainers on ebay that within days were falling apart, so I know what you mean. One of the sellers I have bought from now was actually the small running shop in Edinburgh where I got fitted originally - Footworks. They have an ebay shop where they sell some of their stock, so I knew it was them and I could trust them!

ps Chop, don't worry - what you've done is put some sound advice on the thread in easy speak so that people new to running can get the right shoes for them so well done you! In my personal experience, I would get shoes half a size bigger than normal too, especially for long distance - I lost my big toenails twice, and the ones next door :rotfl:

Goodness me, I go away two days and this is what I come back to? I know its Tuesday and you last had word from me on Sunday-but I've been good:D Yesterday after all my listed food I had 100 calories left on food focus. I've still not done my list for today but I have had my Special K this morning, an apple, a meal replacer shake, 3 cups of tea and for supper I did spaghetti with chilli-lime chicken. I've had just a little less than 2 litres of water,a 15 minute walk to the doctors rooms and I've just done 10 minutes on the Orbitrek. I'm up to the second resistance now, but DS has broken the monitor so I couldn't watch my speed/calories.

DS has been ill and full of tempies since Sunday night so I've had the minimum of sleep. I feel as though it may never end so I'm thankful for my new exercise-it helped clear the mind too.

My NDS arrived this morning so I've been hooked on a game called cake mania, also great for ignoring tempies:)

I'm really impressed with the losses and the HHE's going on, but I'm scared to mention names incase I miss someone.

BB I don't think I mentioned to you the other day...I've decided that I'm going to WI on Saturday's ( oh wait that doesn't really matter coz you'll still put me in this week with my starting) ah the lack of sleep. So now I'm off to have a shower and will pop back in in a few to see if anyone is still here to chat to:)
