Well just had dinner, Jacket potato with ham and low fat cottage cheese, just waiting for it to settle then off to swimming. Still concerened about OHs Birthday meal tomorrow evening, was going to aim for a nice sirlion with Jacket poato but worry I'll be tempted by starter and dessert! I'll be driving so no alcohol makes life easier.
Lunches at work are getting a little repatative while trying to stay away from bread, seam to rotate between omlete, left over stir fry, soup and cracker bread with cottage cheese and sometimes ham, anyone any ideas for cheap and easy healthy eats? I sometimes take a salad but again prep is a pain!Baby :female: Tahlie Lois born 15/3/10 7lb 12 oz :heartpulsWorking on baby no2

Mambury - I bought the Wii for the children, but I bought the Wii Fit primarily for me. However, all 4 of my boys (ranging in age from 17 to 8) use it. My almost 11 y/o and 8 y/o love it! I cancelled my gym membership last month because I hadn't been since last summer. Prior to that I had been going for almost 2 yrs 3 times a week. I did a really thorough workout, so much so that I used to drip with sweat. I was very proud of my weightlifting abilities too (you don't build big muscles BTW, you just tone up), but I was lifting more than some of the men in there! Then the aircon broke, and I simply couldn't cope with the temperature in there. It stayed like that for months. By the time it was fixed, my momentum had gone, and the weight had well and truly leapt back on!
If you joined a gym, could you commit to going at least 3 times a week? I did an hour and a half workout each time I went. 45 mins cardio, 45 mins weights, which is the recommended amount. Our gym had a creche, but the cost was extra. How would you manage to find the time to go? Is it reasonably close by? Bear in mind that if you do a thorough workout, you're going to need to shower/wash hair afterwards, which all takes time. The only negative part of going for me was the time issue. It took my whole morning. I'd start my workout at 9am, be out the shower by 11am, drive home, then have to dry & style my hair till mid-day, so it was half my day gone! I didn't feel like going in the evenings as I was quite tired by then, and it does get rather busy with the after work crowd.
So that's the practical advice, if you've not been to a gym.
What the Wii has going for it is that it is so accessible, easy to use, you can build up your time and effort. The whole family can use it, and it does encourage children to get off their bums and jump about. I'm not under any illusions that it is burning as much fat/calories as the gym did. My shape changed dramatically, and quickly using the gym. But, you could incorporate that into your own day, using a bike, walking, basic weights & the Wii, or exercise videos. I did use videos in the past, but I found them so repetitive that I stopped doing them, as I couldn't cope with hearing the background songs, or the dialogue anymore (I'd have happily punched Mr Motivator at one point)! Think about the type of equipment the gym provides, usually: cross trainer/eliptical, rower, upright bike, recumbent bike, stair climber, treadmill, then resistent weights machines, and free weights. In the cardio section you'd spend 10 mins on each machine, and do different weights machines on different days (shoulders/arms then legs/back, etc), 3 x 10 reps on each, etc. I'm sure Missy could probably advise you better than me!:o
I know the weather doesn't encourage you outside at the mo, but if it's dry, why not put DD in the pushchair and take her out for a fast walk. Do any exercise that makes you out of puff. Do you have a bike, could you get a toddler seat to fit on it?
I think you have to consider how you need to tailor any fitness regime, and how your day to day life can realistically fit in your fitness time. I've got 4 kids, so I know it can be hard.
Anyway, I hope some of that has helped you think about it better.
..
Right Gym/wii pros and cons..........
Gym pro - help to loose weight/tone up quicker.....
pro - they have a swimming pool and jacuzzi
Con - nearest one is 5 miles away
con - no creche ( I don;t think they even know what a creche is here in the back end of beyond:p )
Con - no childcare
con - £35 pcm
con - when we start building I won;t have a life for 6 months or more! OH will be working on it evenings, days off and weekends. Oh and apparently so will I. I;ve been draughted as a labourer:eek: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Wii - pro - already at home so no need for childcare
Pro - all the family benefit
Pro - one off payment,
con - £300 or near as dammit with the fit etc.
con - its a video game, I always said NO to the kids until they could buy one of their own:D
I also work 10 hours a week (wed and fri morning) and I also need to take on another job to help pay the bills and make sure that we don;t slip back into using c/cards and loans. We are also about to remortgage so thats another reason not to join the gym.
I think I will carry on the commando on a Sat morning as much as I can, get a wii fit (Buy now pay feb 10 - additions!) so I can use that during the week when I am house bound. Once the weather is better then I will be going out more but to be honest its been appalling here recently. I am going to start walking DS to school in the mornings when I have time, its only a mile but the school is on the opposite side of a small valley from my house. I kid you not, its like trying to climb everest its that steep, and its a single track lane with idiots driving too quick.
I would like to start running but its getting the time without the kids. I know it all sounds like excuse after excuse but I really am stuck. I only have OH to rely on for childcare and as I said he can be very erratic when he gets home.
DD is starting nursery in Jan next year when she is three so I will def think about joining the gym then. I guess I'll just have to Wii until then.......
THanks everyone for all your help and support. I probably would have given up by now.
Mambury
Oh, I will 'fes up now in advance, I am going to see the MIL over the weekend near Brighton (I;ll wave BB!) so as follows the Mambury family tradition.......Too much chocolate ( its in the house and its rude not to, as a visiting guest), and a LARGE (you have to see it to beleive it, they do not believe in small portions) Chinese to celebrate saturday just because its saturday! And the chinese they order from does the most delicious sweet and sour fish...............MMMNNNNNNNNNNNNN
SORRY, but I am going to be a piggy this weekend, put on weight this week and start from scratch next wed when I get home.....I promise.sealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -

No you cant! Not with my MIL! She force feeds, honestly. Every five minutes, have something to eat, another cup of tea....tea, tea choc cake and biscuits! SHe has been known to try and give the kids choc buttons BEFORE breakfast at 6.30am:eek: .
SHe gets very offended if you don;t eat LOADS and once I start on the choc then.....................:EasterBun :EasterBun
so the diet starts a fresh from next wed. I am being good in the meantime, only cos theres nothing naughty at home (as long as you don;t count me!) and I will try to limit my sugar intake next week. Promise.......sealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -

nmm - I'm still aching from my workout this morning, so have given this evening's stint a miss, but I was there with you in spirit, if it helps! I've not been sat on my bum, mind you, preparing meals, and cleaning/hoovering, etc., so it's not much of a rest until about now with my lot.
mambury - I think the Wii will definitely fit in with your current lifestyle, and it can be used by everyone. I do understand about your no games console rule, but you're fighting a losing battle on that one eventually!
Somnium - If you like soup, then Sainsburys do their own variety of chunky soups, about 54p a tin, and approx 200 cals a tin. I love the beef & chunky veg, chicken & chunky veg, and today tried the bacon & beans one. They're extremely tasty, almost like a casserole. I have a tin every day for my lunch. Sometimes I only need that, or I'll follow that with some plain low fat yogurt with tinned apples (like par-boiled sweet apples) with a sprinkle of cinnamon. That absolutely fills me to the brim! I'm also trying to avoid bread at the mo, so know it's a tricky one. That's why I stick with the soup, and it does tide me over till my evening meal. A nutritionist recommended if you need to snack, choose mixed nuts, as they provide you with slow burn energy, and good fats. Just keep the portions small as they're calorie packed. One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing
Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home0 -
Mambury - I don't think it sounds like you are making excuses ata all: you've done a comprehensive breakdown of realistic options and difficulties. If you are not realistic/ aware of pitfalls then any option you chose may falter. And money has to be a consideration. So good luck - sounds like you've really weighed up what is best for you and your family lifestyle.
As for the family weekend/food fest, I think you are doing the right thing and living real life. Life is for living, so have a good time, guilt free, and then do as you plan to, back on the wagon next wed. These sorts of events are always going to come up and they need to be incororated into your life. And therei is something lovely about a shared family meal/tradition. And for the record, mine mil is exactly the same with food - takes offence very easily if you don't have 3 pudding helpings:eek: . I have more than I would chose but it's never enough:rotfl: .I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
