Of course you're right betheebee. I dragged myself to Mr T and one day won't be able to but spent silly money(nearly £14:eek:)but I plan a good Christmas and what I have will make a few meals(mainly salad)shredded iceberg lettuce, pork pies, spring onions, cucumber. Gravy granuals and Bananas. And milk. I got some curly kale too. Some bread buns reduced. But I did get a bargain.

And could have done much more. Maybe I should've but there isn't the room in the freezer. I got a Tuna steak and a Sea Bass worth £8 and paid £1.52.

My silly luxury was 12 apple, pork and sage stuffing balls which cost me £2.79:eek:but if I made my own with the same flavour I was only saving approx £1 so the only real saving would have been if I had decided not to have any at all.

I need nothing more so may call it a day...I wonder why I did not look at the yellow stickered stuff when Mum was around, we did not waste money but I suppose the truth is we could afford what we were eating. But what we could've had.

Ham is a preserved meat so should be fine in the fridge or even in an unheated room eg (well covered) in the garage if you wouldlike to keep it whole and ready to eat

    Thanks Seakay,
Perhaps there will be some more bargains on meat leading up to New Year that I can take advantage of and keep me fed during 2013.

I have watched a few cookery shows overnight and though no cheaper I do believe I could make my own stuffing now...I would've purchased a mix and added water but I can use pork mince and add various other items of my choosing and it looks quite easy to do. So another new skill to master:)

I often use the very 'basic priced' stuffing (usually SmartPrice for 15p) but then tweak it a bit - some sauteed, finely-chopped onion / extra chopped/dried sage (or whatever herb is most suitable for what I'm cooking) / pureed apple/cranberries/peaches for extra flavour / finely chopped chestnuts.

That is unless I can find some 'Special Stuffings' whoopsied on the 'bashed box shelves' :j.
  • Are you squeamish as deboning the bird is a bit yucky.

Had a 3 bird roast from Aldi last year - was surprised how good it was. This year am back to turkey as we have some 'picky' guests. Have just honey roasted a ham (soaked in cider overnight, simmer for 1.5hrs, remove skin, score fat, drizzle honey into the scores, roast for 20 mins) my kitchen smells wonderful!

    Happy Christmas everyone!

I'm simmering my gammon in coke for 1.5hrs then removing the rind, scoring the fat into triangles then cover in honey sprinkled with mustard and stud the triangle shapes with cloves before popping in the oven for 30mns.
