Basically cheap mp3 playas have crap SNR ratings. Experience has proven this too...and it's noticeable

Yes, you are correct. I once bought one from ebay. Could always hear the hiss in the b/g.

You were unlucky - my cheap one from eBay is perfectly fine. Either you didn't get one of merchantable quality, or you're using it in unrealistic conditions.

What makes this player so great? The Rio range is made by Denon which is considered by audiophiles to be the best around...yes better than bose even. iPoop and this thing...who does the sound processing for them? I don't know but can't imagine anyone special.

Denon the best around...hmmm. Even better than Bose! What??

Denon makes good entry level to enthusiast kit, but it's not for true audiophiles. And Bose is not a good comparison. Their stuff is generally good looking, but inferior with regards to sound quality/image.

The iPod and Creative products have very good sound quality, regardless of manufacturers.

These sony ones from Amazon are amazing. You have to get used to how they sit in the ear, but they cut out lots of outside sound and are really comfortable. (I find that most in-ear phones hurt after 10 mins or so, especially iPod ones) You can also get them in white: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008XYJL/qid=1137935940/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-5103581-4239818

Got a pair myself. Worth trying them out in a shop first. It's a different form of listening, some people like it, others don't. You'll find, due to the vacuum caused by the isolation plugs that things such as chewing and your feet hitting the ground are magnified. In fact chewing gum can be quite annoying. Plus you won't be able to hear traffic, people calling you, the noise the tube doors make as they're about to close on you etc...
