We are making the journey together on this one - all the jan 09 BR's together (2 so far!! me and sa).
all of the expert "elders" are there for when we post our questions as you are all a great help. Like I said, anyone can comment. All it is is for everyone going BR at the same time or in the same month, to feedback to each other what is happening in their BR and and at what time or point in their BR it happens. comparison purposes for each other to learn what to expect in the next stage of our BR.

Hi Rijo and welcome, have put you onto the list.
I am sure that your kids wil have a fantastic xmas. it is the little things that count and make the days special. are they still quite young?
You sound like a lovely guy and am sure you are a great plumber and the people that you have helped really appreciated it. Everyone gets another chance and BR is just that. your chance for a fresh start in life.
I have certainly learnt my lesson about credit cards and debts. never again! but we fall down, pick ourselves up and keep on going.
keep us updated with your BR progress. I am going BR on 7th January and can't wait to get it over with.
Best wishes. Donna.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
Hi everybody
Believe it or not i am a plumber. Most people think we earn loads of money and are minted. This is not true as most plumbers i no are struggling and are running their busineses in the red. Its amazing how things can change with a bit of bad luck and miss management can do. My problem was that i was too honest. Do a job for a mate and charge them the bare minimum plus a pint of Guiness. Charge the pensioner a cup of tea for a 1/2 hour job. Do a few extras on a job for a customer and not charge them because they made you a bacon buttie and were really nice people. Unfortunately it doesnt make business sense and it is my nature.
Welcome rijo,
You have found a good place here as I am sure you have realised. It has completely changed my life in that I am viewing my financial problems differently and feel that I am getting some control over them rather than them being in control of me!
I completely understand about your "trade" - my ex-husband was a carpenter and he had exactly the same problems. That, and a number of customers who at the end of the job refused to pay the amount agreed or pay for extras that they had asked for. It made life really hard for him. He actually gave up self employment and was happier earning a lower monthly salary and his new boss taking the flak from the customers!
I hope you enjoy your Christmas and like me keep everyone updated on your progress. It is a real learning experience.

Hi SA,
I felt so much better after being on here and reading other experiences and knowing that I was not alone in this situation.
This forum and it's members have been so much help to me and I want to try give some back to others (really corny sorry).
(((((hugs for you))))) well done SA and thanks for posting here. When your BR and my BR go through, we can get to the Bankrupt Inn and have a nice drink! and breathe a big sigh of relief!
Hi Donna,
Thanks for your lovely words. I don't often tell "my story" but sometimes I get so het up about how and why I got into this state in the first place I have to let off steam!
At the time I actually rang my GP in the UK and explained the situation. He told me that if I returned to England I would be seen as an emergency within 6 weeks but surgery had a 6 - 12 month waiting list (and this was after I had an MRI showing a fractured spine!) I realised then that the only way out was to pay privately.
One thing that does worry me though is how many people are confined to wheelchairs because of GPs mis-diagnosing or refusing to refer to a specialist. Perhaps I am one of the lucky ones....
What a lot has happened to me this week:-
I have decided to go BR.
I have made an appt for filing for BR......
I have opened a new bank account (cashminder)
I have cancelled all my d/ds (first time ever)
I am not paying my non-priority debts (first time ever)
BUT..... I am feeling calmer (most of the time) and more settled than I have in years and I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel. I have taken 3 days off work to sort everything out and it has really paid off.
I have spent ages reading all the info on BR, especially about the IPA because my income will fluctuate with overtime from month to month, but I think I have got my head round it now. I just hope my OR is a nice person and not an ogre like some people have described...
The CCCS BR team have been wonderful - what a great service and all for nowt!!!
Just the forms to wrestle with now......... Keep you posted..
BTW definitely a trip to the Bankrupt Inn is on the cards, hopefully to celebrate and not drown our sorrows!!

Hi Lisa,
I hope you are still upbeat about everything and that your baby continues to improve..... how many things on your plate at the moment? It is good that us females can multi-task!
Yes, I am sure that there are a lot of major medical boo-boo's that people are never aware of. Too often GPs are tunnel-visioned and just think of the most likely cause rather than all the possible problems. I actually know what I am talking about - "back in the day" I worked in the NHS Primary Care sector and I know about the financial pressures on GPs to keep costs down.
I too changed my doctor and my (female) GP that sees me now couldn't be more different. She is wonderful and has really helped me through ALL my problems, and still smiles when I walk through her door!
Happy Friday to you....

hiya I am (hopefully) going bankrupt on the 9th Jan, heres a little bit of how its come about:
I had a v v good job and hubby decided to start his own business 5 years ago, things were going swimmingly. About 2 years ago hubby fell ill and had to rely on staff to keep the business going, I tried to keep an eye on things but I lost my job in 2006 due to an injury which resulted in operations on my back and a whole load of pain, so my employers put me on a disability pension. Along with no one really running the business and things in the economy starting to get tight the business was suffering. We did not draw a wage from the business for the last 3 years therefore ended up running up cc bills to live and had remortgaged the house to put some money back in the business. At the beginning of this year we realised it was going from bad to worse with arrears on the mortgage etc, went for an IVA and scrapped through on this but bad mistake as we could not keep up the payments as were still ridiculous. Decided to stop the business and put plans in process to move our customers to protect them and ceased trading properlly a couple of months ago. Lost our house to repossession which was devastating as worked so hard to get it and was kids 'home' no in a rented house a lot smaller and further away from kids friends and school but we are ok. Now needing to start the process of putting all this behind us and after a lot of umming and arrring came on here and lots of positive support and advice have phoned the courts - got my paperwork today! and set a date for the bankruptcy hearing on 9th Jan.
Now looking forward to getting through this - feel like there is some light somewhere along this dark damp tunnel.
As with MeiMei need some advice re business -was a ltd co and cannot afford to put ourselves into voluntary insolvency so having to sit and wait for creditors to do it for us which is a long long nightmare
heres to a fresh start

Hi fellow members of the Jan Clan ......
I think this is such a good idea and thanks to Donna for both thinking it up and putting the wheels in motion.
I have got so much done this morning..... it was payday today (early because of Christmas) so I have tried to get everything up to date ready for the big BR.
6 weeks rent paid (was slightly in arrears)
Last payment made on car insurance for the year.
6 months road tax.
Last payment of 08/09 council tax - yippee!!!
Paid remainder of phone bill that arrived today - I have been paying some off monthly in advance so that the bill wouldn't be a nasty shock before xmas.
and bought myself a new hoover.... :T I figure there won't be too much spare cash afterwards so I need to get organised now while I have got a few pennies.
I am still waiting for my cashminder details but it has only been 3 days and there is no particular rush but I will feel better when I see my new account number in black and white!
I am also pleased with myself for taking a few days off from work. It has given me some breathing space and also the time to get things done and done properly (hopefully) and not rushing around like a headless chicken in my lunch hour. It has also cut down my overtime totals due to be paid at the end of Jan so that is good as well. Can't be earning too much now, can I ?
Anyone else getting the jitters? I am fine most of the time and then I get to thinking "What the heck have I done?"
It'll pass.....
