The January 2009 BR Club

DON79

This club is for everyone who has gone through the process of Bankruptcy during January 2009. So please feel free to join and post.
Pop your name on here, the date that you went Bankrupt and the stage that you are at now in your Bankruptcy. And then just keep everyone in the club updated throughout the next year about your journey through Bankruptcy. That way we can all stick together and compare notes and we will be there to support each other throughout the different stages in our Bankruptcy.
Remember this is your board so keep posting.
Obviously anyone can come on here and post anything that will help us all and you are all welcome. Any important questions that do need answering are maybe still better posted on the main board but if you do put it on here, then maybe we can help each other.
Hopefully it will be an extra place for friendship and support as we compare notes and discuss what is happening with our Bankruptcies.
prepared by Green Witch Publications Ltd

I will start the new board for each month at the end of the previous month or if you would like to start it earlier, please pm me and will get it underway.

Definitely a member of the Jan 09 club. My BR date is Mon 12th Jan.
If someone had told me two weeks ago that this would be happening I would have thought that they were joking..... and yet
It's true!!!!
Was going to write more here, but dont want to clog up the thread so will post elsewhere.....

It's ok startagain, you can write more if you would like, the clubs for talking about your BR if you feel like sharing info.
just if it is important questions for the experts to help, you might be better to do a separate post too. thank you for joining me. I was beginning to feel a bit alone in the January club!BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -

I must admit, I had to shut the 'puter down today because it needed to do 43(!) updates..... I nearly missed this.
I have to admit that within 36 hours of requesting my BR appt I am sitting here wondering what on Earth have I done? Not in a bad way but it has all happened so fast that I feel like I am in a car without brakes!!!
I have struggled for over 18 months with my unsecured debts. My problems started 4 years ago when I had to pay for an operation on my spine while I was living and working abroad. I had suffered with the most awful back pain for 15 years and my GP treated it as "wear and tear" after many years of serious horse riding. I had x-rays which showed poor vertebrae and was given physio and hydrotherapy and lots of pain killers and anti inflammatories
and was told that "it should settle". I was suicidal with pain at times. All my requests to see a Consultant were met with - not neccessary!
I decided to take up a chance to work in the Caribbean and thought the climate might help the pain. You can also buy painkillers over the counter and I was taking double doses. Then one day the GP in the hotel where I worked commented that I wasn't walking properly and said that I needed to see a Neurosurgeon urgently. Luckily for me, the local hospital was like a department store for Consultants. You just went to the speciality you needed and sat outside the office and got a consultation, for £15.00!!!
I was told that I needed an MRI urgently - this was done the next day (for £100) and it showed a fractured vertebra which was severing the sciatic nerve. I was given a maximum of 3 months before I would be in a wheelchair permanently.
Lots of transatlantic phone calls later (with family and GP in the UK) I decided to have the op done there!!! A third world country, I had to give my own blood in case of emergency and I have never prayed so much in my life.
It cleared me out of everything I had....... but I was pain free. it was a complete success and I was pain free, but broke!
I had to return home to the UK a few months later, single, female in my mid -40's with nothing.
So, I found work..... 3 jobs to be precise.. one full time and two little cleaning jobs. Trying to start all over, in middle age, is pretty hard and over the following years I have slowly got more and more into financial trouble. The silly thing is that even now the CCs just keep upping the credit limits on cards when it is apparent that you can only make minimum payments.
Four years on, with £15k of unsecured debt I have finally surrended. I am worn out, both mentally and physically and to put the icing on the cake 16 people have been made redundant this week from my office and my work/income is apparently going to change big time in January (worse).
So I am waving the white flag, found this forum (thank God) and got a date for BR.... The thought of actually being able to afford the housekeeping expenses without robbing Peter to pay Paul is wonderful. I have felt like a juggler for longer than I care to remember.
It is the best Christmas present I could have asked for....
Sorry for the lengthy post..... and this is the potted version!

Hi SA,
you have had such a difficult time and I am sorry you have had to go through so much. But absolutely well done for getting through it and coming this far.
I can't believe our health service sometimes. To actually be told that you just have to live with the pain is just disgusting treatment. And then to go abroad and have a doctor there find out within the space of two days what the problem is! Thing is if you had decided to come back to the UK for surgery, you would have had to wait. Glad that you got it sorted out and you are much better.
I really know where you are coming from about the financial trouble just slowly building up and the credit card companies upping the limits. Yes I know it is not as though anyone forces you to use the credit but sometimes it comes down to desperate choices and then you start getting in a trap. I feel mentally worn out too with the stress of having to cope with juggling my own debts. And I too robbed peter to pay paul, doing balance transfers each month to make the payments.
I felt so much better after being on here and reading other experiences and knowing that I was not alone in this situation.
This forum and it's members have been so much help to me and I want to try give some back to others (really corny sorry).
It was really a big step for me to decide to go bankrupt and i went through a lot of weepy moments.
(((((hugs for you))))) well done SA and thanks for posting here. When your BR and my BR go through, we can get to the Bankrupt Inn and have a nice drink! and breathe a big sigh of relief!BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
AAAAAAAAAAAAAnd what about all those pre 2009 !!!, we have feelings too:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :beer:0

Sorry! but you can come on and chat! this is so we can check our progress through bankruptcy with each other and compare OR interviews and ED dates and how the BR process went. You are welcome.
Or should I start up the "previous BR's monthly club pre Dec 08- ?"BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
What about your hyperthetical elders, we also can tell you what it was like not just from start ,mid point to finish But the end AND the long road to recovery after the fact!!:rolleyes:0

We are making the journey together on this one - all the jan 09 BR's together (2 so far!! me and sa).
all of the expert "elders" are there for when we post our questions as you are all a great help. Like I said, anyone can comment. All it is is for everyone going BR at the same time or in the same month, to feedback to each other what is happening in their BR and and at what time or point in their BR it happens. comparison purposes for each other to learn what to expect in the next stage of our BR.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -
Hi everybody
Im going bankrupt sometime early January after my final meeting with the CAB who are going to help me fill in the forms and advise me. Its just a case of getting through Christmas and making sure the children have enough and enjoy it. Obviously they cannot have all they want and they will go short compared to other years but me and my wife are going to try to give them some quality happy family time (watch a few christmassy films with popcorn, go for some frosty walks in the local park, play board games etc) We are still looking forward to it. It will just be different, perhaps this is how it should be instead of going out, having expensive parties and spoiling the children rotten.
Im going bankcrupt after 8 long years struggling trying to make my business work, made a few mistakes along the way and i am now paying for it dearly. Used the old credit cards to pay for merchant bills, day to day spending generally in the hope the payback would come. It hasnt and now i have give up the ghost after struggling to pay the morgage and make ends meet for too long. The sad thing is if i had stayed in my job instead of going for it i would of had far less stress and be financially secure. The only consilation for me is that i have learned more about what is important in life and about good and bad people, how to manage money properly (yes i have learned from my mistakes)that most people learn in a lifetime and now i want to put it together and have a fresh start. I really hope the world will give me another chance. Believe it or not i am a plumber. Most people think we earn loads of money and are minted. This is not true as most plumbers i no are struggling and are running their busineses in the red. Its amazing how things can change with a bit of bad luck and miss management can do. My problem was that i was too honest. Do a job for a mate and charge them the bare minimum plus a pint of Guiness. Charge the pensioner a cup of tea for a 1/2 hour job. Do a few extras on a job for a customer and not charge them because they made you a bacon buttie and were really nice people. Unfortunately it doesnt make business sense and it is my nature.
Anyway enough of my waffle im going bankrupt early January and im going to make a fresh start and im going to make it work. Lets do it and lets make it work. OK we will still get some knocks along the way but dont forget our British spirit and the words of the most famous British Priminister " When going through hell, keep going" Winston Churchill0
