Quillion - The debt is still yours (or rather dh's), personally I'd get the sister to pay off her debts or add it to the DMP! Else transfer the details over to her (unless not possible of course), not sure about the bank account though, depends on if you have any debt with the same company...

    Can anyone else help?[/quote]

No Debt with either the credit card or the bank account. She can't afford to pay off the cc in full and does not have enough in the bank account to pay it off.
We have gone onto short time.

I rang egg today to see of they could help and as i could not give them a date when we resume normal working they advised me to do a dmp with cccs. They even gave me the number to ring.

  • Hello,

I've finally had to give in and consider getting a DMP after managing to live within my means (just) over the past 4 months by paying the minimum repayments on my credit cards and trying to reduce my overdraft...but Bank of Scotland have said that they will not reduce my overdraft from £2900 to £2500 after it expires on 24 April this year. In fact, they're not willing to give me any overdraft at all! Instead they're trying to get me to take out a bank loan, but my credit rating's so poor now that I'll doubt I'll get that anyway.

I phoned CCCS tonight and they were very helpful, but I'm very frightened at the thought of collection agents turning up at my door, especially as I'm a woman living on my own!! So I thought I'd ask you all for your advice on these areas:

    - I work as a teacher - will having a DMP affect my career in any way?
-Have any of you had a hard time from creditors refusing to agree to a DMP? Are they quite bad for pestering people with scary letters, collection agents etc?
    - I currently owe money to the following banks...what's been your experience of dealing with them?

    Sainsbury's Loan £3,918.56 Abbey Credit Card £4,504.36 Sainsbury's Credit Card £4,022.61 MBNA £2,092.66 Overdraft £2,900.00 Barclaycard £855.21 GRAND TOTAL £18,293.40
Anyway, my questions have no doubt been answered elsewhere on this thread, but I'm so stressed about this right now that I can't see them for looking! Plus I feel so stupid for getting myself into such a mess that it's taken a lot for me to write this :embarasse...but everyone on this thread seems really supportive, so I'll stop rambling now, and hopefully get some replies!

Quillion - Sorry, not sure what you mean by "We have gone onto short time". Also, "When you resume normal working"?

If you have no debt connected to the bank account, then you maybe able to keep that, although you shouldn't have any debt (read: overdraft) that isn't on the DMP.

Jenevieve - Think we've discussed NR above; I have MBNA through Abbey. They were awkward to start with, but aren't too bad now. I believe they've just sold my debt off...

dfw1978 - I have debt with Sainsburys (who are linked to Halifax - I have debt with them too). They have been quiet, just send the odd letter and phone call. They've just defaulted me. MBNA see above.

All of my creditors (there were a lot of them) stopped interest pretty sharpish. Any that I were overdrawn with, added a couple of charges to start with. My most troublesome have been two overdrafts who are still charging each month, and a tiny amount of £145 owed to Hfc (I bought a sofa through Dfs...) who couldn't understand why I couldn't pay them off. They've since accepted a temporary repayment scheme of £1 a month...

Arent they just fab at encouraging people to take on more debt  - Anyway, first things first - find a new basic bank account (one with no overdraft facilities/credit card linked to it) which is not in any way related to your current creditors. Arrange for your salary to paid into your new account ASAP - BoS can do what they like then ... no salary going in that account anymore means that they cant take YOUR money. The OD amount can be added to your DMP. Co-Op Cashminder or a Natwest account might be suitable for you - I dont think either of those are related to any of your current creditors who appear to be Abbey/MBNA/Santander, Barclaycard/Barclays. I dont know who Sainsburys are linked to - does anyone else know

I phoned CCCS tonight and they were very helpful, but I'm very frightened at the thought of collection agents turning up at my door, especially as I'm a woman living on my own!! So I thought I'd ask you all for your advice on these areas: Please dont worry about things like that just now. It is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that anyone should turn up at your door - and even if they do, as I've read on here many times, they have as much right to enter your home as the paper boy does ... absolutely none! So please, dont worry. It is usual that some companies/debt collection agencies will try any tactics they can to try and get some kind of payment out of you. You just need to agree your budget and payment plan with CCCS and then stick to that. Just take one step at a time. I know how easily it is to fret but you are taking control of things and it will get easier (and you will have much fewer sleepless nights!).

    - I work as a teacher - will having a DMP affect my career in any way? - I dont think so - but someone else may know better. To my knowledge, no, it wouldnt.
-Have any of you had a hard time from creditors refusing to agree to a DMP? Are they quite bad for pestering people with scary letters, collection agents etc? Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed answer I'm afraid. Some will pester and some wont. Overall though, what I can say is, that after the initial setting up /sending token payments / getting settled into your new plan, there are some creditors who will try really hard to get you to pay up. You can either refuse to answer the phone or if you do speak to them, tell them that you are on a DMP with CCCS and give them your reference number - ask your creditor to contact CCCS directly (after all, that's what CCCS are there for). Dont be drawn in by their sometimes aggressive/threatening behaviour. If a call is getting out of hand, just put the phone down ;)

    - I currently owe money to the following banks...what's been your experience of dealing with them?

Sainsbury's Loan £3,918.56 Abbey Credit Card £4,504.36 FINE Sainsbury's Credit Card £4,022.61 MBNA £2,092.66 FINE Overdraft £2,900.00 FINE - mine was with Abbey Barclaycard £855.21 BARELY HEAR ANYTHING, payments just go directly from CCCS GRAND TOTAL £18,293.40

Anyway, my questions have no doubt been answered elsewhere on this thread, but I'm so stressed about this right now that I can't see them for looking! "I know the feeling :p "

Plus I feel so stupid for getting myself into such a mess that it's taken a lot for me to write this :embarasse...but everyone on this thread seems really supportive, so I'll stop rambling now, and hopefully get some replies!
Please dont feel in any way stupid because you are not, not by a long chalk ... we're all here for the same reasons and, if you are stupid, that makes us all stupid :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: . Seriously though, I do understand where you are coming from - it doesnt matter how we all got here ... it's what we do from now on that counts. We're all trying to find a way to clear the debts AND be able to live reasonably well (ie food, heat, roof over head - that sort of thing).

You've done amazing contacting CCCS - are they going to send you the Debt Remedy plan out - did you complete it online? You should give yourself a big pat on the back and then treat yourself to some lovely chocolate ... oh yes, I have decided that chocolate is the cure for everything ... mmmmm ;)

So, a big warm welcome from everyone here :hello: kick off your shoes, put some groovy music on and dance like no-one is watching  . Then, grab yourself a cuppa :coffee: and feel free to browse the thread (if your heads not too busy with everything else) to see how other people have been getting along and, above all, ask any questions that you like - we're all here to help each other.

    Evening everyone.

Cant remember who asked what but from what i can remember...

MSC-I have natwest loan and cc as my creditors and my loan repayment via dmp is £149 a month on a original £450 a month repayment..they have been great accepted this payment since the start and have been great to deal with..the same with the credit card.

debtfree78 welcome onboard...a debt managment isnt something you have to declair i was a school govener and it was only bankruptcy that was asked about so you should have no worrys there.

    My creditors was/are
    NATWEST LOAN
    NATWEST CC
    NATWEST OD
    HALIFAX CC
    STUDIO CARDS
    ARGOS STORE CARD
    EGG CC
    ADAMS STORECARD
    MONUMENT CC-NOW CABOT CA
    LITTLEWOODS
    GUS

Have to say iv never had any really problem with any, cabot that bought my monument cc debt have been great and were the first to offer me full and finals, natwest loan, adams have also offerd these too.

In the begining (over 3yrs ago now) when i first started this debt free journey i got the phone calls the letters...this is normal....do not panic..once the creditors saw i was serious about paying this off via a dmp all stopped interest...so dont give up it just takes a few months to get things rolling after that.....you can go months without having anything, even years!

Quillion - Sorry, not sure what you mean by "We have gone onto short time". Also, "When you resume normal working"?

    We work in manufacturing
At christmas we were told not to come back to work till week after we should have and they paid us 20.48 per day for 5 days. Went back to work had a meeting where they said from the following monday we would be working a three day week and part timers would be pro rata making my hours 14 hours. This is to continue for a minimum of 8 weeks but can and will be extended if no orders come in. i was just managing to pay everything before now i can't.
    Hence the DMP.
I wish i could make DH see that this would be the better option in the long term but he still has his head in the sand. Not had his light bulb moment yet!!
    PS
DH works at the same place and has lost 16 hours per week

dEBTFREE78---I take it from the 78 that you maybe about the same age as me (77 babe!!)...i at first felt silly, mad, scared that i had got into such as mess....the turning point for myself and hubby was one saturday morning the post fell on the doormat........AND I FELL TO PIECES!!!

It was then i realised this couldnt go on for the kids sake aswell as ours..i search the internet for information as i hadnt found this wonderful site then (i wished i had) and by that afternoon had spoken to a dmp company and signed up. The huge sense of relife was amazing....still a little scared i did everything they told me to..sent of letters ect and have never looked back, apart from making the mistake of going to a fee paying firm for the first 2 years and 11 months, i am still grateful to the firm for getting me on the debt free journey but have recently swapped over to payplan meaning my dfd is even closer.
Im 3 years and 1 month into my journey and have my life back....if you had seen me 4 years ago when the kids gave me there xmas , b.day lists i used to fall to bits behind closed doors...yet this year for an example my boys asked for ps3, and my daughter for a ds........i smiled and went out and paid CASH for everything on their lists without worrying as this money had already been put away all accounted for under the dmp!!! Seeing their faces when they got everything they asked for and my hubbys smile knowing `santa` had paid cash makes you realise that a dmp has been a lifeline for us.....so what if they creditors are getting less a month than they did...im paying it back every last penny just over a longer time and in the mean time my family are enjoying day to day life, hoildays, birthdays ,xmas........DMP`S ROCK (as my kids would say!!!)

  • Thanks so much Sunshine and Donna! You've really helped put my mind at ease. To be honest I'm so angry and annoyed at the banks about being so blatant with how they're trying to get me into more debt, but I just wanted to double-check that I'm doing the right thing...I haven't even told any of my closest friends about the mess I'm in, so getting advice from you makes me feel a bit less alone! :cheesy: The first thing the CCCS Advisor said to me was to open a basic bank account tomorrow as well Sunshine, so I'll definitely do that during some of my free periods tomorrow.

That's reassuring that you had no problems with becoming school governor Donna! I'm just starting out as a teacher - it's partly the reason why I got myself into so much debt - so I don't want to mess up my career before it's even begun.

Yeah I definitely agree that chocolate is the answer to everything Sunshine - I've already had a couple of chocs and tea whilst browsing tonight - instead of preparing school work for tomorrow which is what I should have been doing!
